Advent Prayer Father, the day of our salvation draws ever near; your light grows steadily around us to pierce the darkness of our minds and open us to your promise of Life. Your Son Jesus Christ comes in the midst of men, now in spirit where once He came in flesh. Open our eyes that we may see His presence, and our ears that we may hear His call, in all the events that fill our lives today.

The Service of Lessons and Carols will be held on

Sunday, Decem ber 11 th at

3: 00pm in the Main Church

Give us courage to respond to Him, to say Yes; to carry on the work of love and service for which He was sent and for which he has sent us. Give birth to Your Son in our lives that through us he may give life to the world. All glory be to you, Father, now and forever. Amen

This annual servic e pr esents script ural readings from Genesis, Isaiah, and the Gospels, which tell the story of the fall of hum anity, the pr om ise of the M essiah, and the birth of Christ the Savio r. These readings are interspe rsed with carols and anthem s sung by the congr ega tion and the Saint Barnabas Choirs. Why not take a break from Christmas Shopping and join us for a beautiful afternoon in the Main Church.

Solemn Advent Vespers The season of Advent, the beginning of the Church’s Liturgical Year, is a time of preparation, hope, reflection and anticipation that provides the Church an opportunity to enter into quiet, meditative and penitential reflection upon the celebration and the mystery that is the Incarnation – The Solemnity of Christmas. This season we offer another opportunity to enter more deeply into this beautiful season of preparation with the celebration of Solemn Vespers or Evening Prayer. Evening Prayer or Vespers comes from the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer celebrated by Priests, Deacons, Religious brothers and sisters and even lay faithful throughout the world. The public celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours is an important part of the Rites of the Church and as the major documents of Vatican II states, “Pastors of souls should see that the major hours of the Church, in particular Vespers are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and on more solemn seasons/occasions.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n.100) We will have the privilege of introducing this beautiful service during the Advent season here at St. Barnabas as another opportunity to open our hearts to prayer and to recollect our minds as we prepare for the coming of the Lord. Each Sunday during Advent, the service of Vespers will begin at 4:00pm in the Main Church and last approximately 35 minutes. After the service is completed, the usual 5:00pm Mass will take place. The dates for Vespers are as follows:

   

1st Sunday of Advent (November 27) - Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm 2nd Sunday of Advent (December 4) – Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm 3rd Sunday of Advent (December 11) – Lessons & Carols will replace Solemn Vespers 4th Sunday of Advent (December 18) – Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm a
