A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Thanksgiving and Advent I hope everyone had a truly Blessed Thanksgiving. This weekend we also begin the celebration of Advent which is a time for preparing our hearts and souls for the celebration of our Savior's birth and for His return in glory. Let us increase our love and devotion through prayer, penance and giving to those in need. Light the Way The first Thursday in December is always our Light the Way celebration at Cress Creek Country Club. There is still time to sign up. Please contact the parish office. This year the proceeds will go to the charitable work of the parish including more than 30 different charities that are supported. Special Thanks to Ray Jones and his team. Ray has been heading up our only parish fundraiser for 20 years having raised $1.6 million dollars for various needs within and outside the parish. Thank you! Thank you to all who were so generous to me on my 50th birthday. It was truly appreciated. I am still eating all of the sweets and consuming the requisite beverages. Prayer at the end of Mass Since the Year of Mercy has ended, we will return to the practice of praying the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel and the Hail Mary following each liturgy. We turn our prayers to Saint Michael and Blessed Mother who are always so good in answering our prayers. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ,

Fr. Thomas A. Milota

Congratulations to all of the religious education and school students who celebrated the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time on November 19th. We hope that they always remember the joy of God's unconditional love and forgiveness! Thank you to the teachers, catechists, assistants and parents who helped to prepare the children for this special occasion. On Tuesday December 6th and Wednesday December 7thduring class time, Mr. Ron Frederick will be giving a talk on Marian Apparitions to our 5th grade students. This is a fascinating presentation that the children always enjoy, and we welcome parents or other parishioners to join us. Call the RE Office for more information.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE HAPPENINGS AND MORE Transitional Housing Ministry

Saint Vincent de Paul First Sunday of Advent There is an Advent spirit in the heart of every human person. It is one of longing, of yearning for a fulfillment that somehow lies beyond ourselves; for we long for the coming of the Lord.

The Saints Peter and Paul Transitional Housing Ministry has been helping homeless families with dependent children become self-sufficient since 1992. Your donations in the pink envelopes helps the Ministry provide 2 years of temporary housing, life-skills mentoring, job training and other supportive services for each family in our program.

As you put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, your heart will discover the true meaning of Christmas as you help those who are suffering and poor to long for the coming of the Lord.

For more information on the Transitional Housing Ministry, call Jack Flowers at 630-355-4886.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.

First Sunday Advent Time Fourth Sunday in of Ordinary

Page 11 10

MATTHEW’S GOSPEL CORNER Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent, a time of preparation for the coming of our Lord Jesus at Christmas. It is also the beginning of the new liturgical year, Year A, and so the Sunday Gospels will be taken primarily from Matthew with exceptions during the Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter Seasons. In the first reading from Isaiah 2:1-5, the prophet rejoices in the final restoration of Jerusalem (Zion) “on that day” which Yahweh will bring about. Then peoples from all the world will stream toward Zion where Yahweh will judge between the nations, carrying out justice according to their deeds. At that time, the instruments of war will be destroyed: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” War will be abolished forever and all peoples will live in peace: “One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again.” When that day comes, all shall “walk in the light of the Lord.” The second reading from the Letter to the Romans (Rm 13:11-14) reminds us that our time is short, our day of judgment is nearer at hand then when we first accepted the faith. Recognizing that reality, it is time to abandon all forms of evil, anything that hinders our relationship with God and service to others. While we may not be participating in orgies and drunkenness, there are undoubtedly areas in our life where we still cling to selfishness and sin – to the ways of this world. Our tendency is to minimize our particular sins, whether grave or not, and thus our resolve to “sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin” is often lacking. Advent is a time to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ,” to grow in holiness and grace rather than conforming ourselves to this world and our habitual behavior. While the Letter to the Romans is often quoted to support the notion that we are “saved by faith and not by works,” Pauline theology does not support the idea that salvation can be obtained regardless of what we do in and through the body. St. Paul tells us in today’s reading, “make no provisions for the desires of the flesh.” By this St. Paul means those desires that are outside our life as Christians and our vocation, whether that be illicit sex, pornography, a disordered love for money, power, vanity, pride, gossip, or envy. As we grow in faith and holiness, the severity and frequency of sin should decrease, but to grow we must put on the armor of Christ and remain vigilant. Frequent reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist are indispensible in this fight. In Matthew’s Gospel (Mt 24:37-44) Jesus warns His disciples about the suddenness of death. Even for those gravely ill, the actual moment of death can still catch one unawares. Christ urges us to be vigilant – to live in such a way that death finds us ready to meet Him. While Christ speaks in the Gospel about His Second Coming, for us, it is not the Second Coming that will likely come first, but our particular judgment. St. Paul tells us that the decisive moment in salvation history has already occurred in the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. The “Christ-Event,” as it is sometimes referred to, will always remain the pivotal moment in human history. We are living in the end times regardless of when Christ’s second coming occurs. Little or nothing is gained speculating when it will unfold since for us as disciples we are called to live anticipating His imminent return. Even for believers, for those who profess Christ, Jesus warns us that it is all too easy to be caught up in temporal concerns and find ourselves unprepared when judgment comes. Today’s passages from Matthew and the Letter to the Romans have an apocalyptic tone, much like the Old Testament Book of Daniel, Chapter 7, which emphasizes the passing nature of kingdoms and nations that appear so steadfast. The point of each is that as we attend to our needs and to those in our care, our motivations, choices, and actions must reflect the mind of Christ. Advent is a time to pause and reflect upon our motivations and choices as well as those areas in our lives where grace has yet to permeate and prepare a place fitting for Christ to dwell. 1

Flame of Faith intentions for this week:

6.

For the repose of the soul of Emil Mandel For Lorraine Woulf’s health to improve For God’s blessing on our newly elected resident For complete healing of Parkinson’s for Don L. For the repose of the most abandoned souls in purgatory For the protection of the unborn.

Remember to pray for those who have died, to remember them in your prayers. Research different saints who have spoken to Jesus about the Holy Souls or have been visited by Holy Souls requesting prayers. Pray this beautiful prayer for the Faithful Departed from Novena for the Relief of the Poor Souls in Purgatory, by a missionary of the Sacred Heart. Picture Our Lord reaching his strong right hand in to Purgatory and lifting souls into Heaven. O most compassionate Jesus, have mercy on the souls detained in Purgatory for whose redemption Thou didst take upon Thee our nature and endure a bitter death. Mercifully hear their sighs, look with pity on the tears which they now shed before Thee and, by virtue of Thy Passion, release them from the pains due unto their sins. O most merciful Jesus, let They Precious Blood reach down into Purgatory and refresh and revive the captive souls which suffer there. Stretch forth unto them Thy strong right hand and bring them forth into the place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen. “Let us pray a great deal for them and they will pray for us.” Venerable Cure d’Ars http://www.prayforsouls.org/about/faq.php http://www.holysouls.info/
