First Sunday in Advent

November 27, 2016

Deacon Advent Reflections from Deacon Jorge Dear Parishioners, Let us rejoice in the Lord’s peace, let us live honorably as we await his return! With the first Sunday of Advent we start a new liturgical year cycle. Advent is time of hope. The Lord is coming to save us! We are expecting the coming of our savior. During Advent we remember God’s promise to humanity, through the prophets. A promise made in the Old Testament to Adam, Noah and to Abraham. The people of Israel walk anxious of their freedom, with the hope of one day see themselves free from the oppression of other powers. God promises them a peaceful era. Isiah, in today’s reading is exhorting them and us to walk guided by the faith’s light. So at the end of times God will domain over any impediment because “From Jerusalem comes God’s Word.” In his vision Isiah is revealing Jesus Christ. When the proper time comes ”God sends his Son, born from a woman, to give us all the filial adoption” Today’s world continues fighting to conquer liberty. Jesus mission was precisely the mission of salvation, to liberate. His mission is to liberate us from sin. To make us Christians who deserve entering into the Kingdom of God. Jesus came and continue coming. Jesus comes to save us. Jesus mission never ends, our savior is persistent. Because Jesus is always looking for the lost sheep, we should be alert. We should always be prepared. The Gospel tells us that at the hour least suspected we will be called to face our Father. What is awaiting us is a marvelous Grace. So let us be prepared. The words that come from Jesus are real words of joy and encouragement; a new life is awaiting us. But how we could be prepared? How we remain vigilant and alert during this Advent? What we should do is not to have a vague sense of preparation, or to perform our Christian responsibilities mechanically, but to make the firm decision to live only for the Lord. If every day we pray, read the scriptures, repent of our sins, dedicate ourselves to love more, we will be opening the doors to Divine Grace. The Church throughout the liturgical year and throughout Advent is announcing the Lord, proclaim his proximity and reincarnate him among its people. Lets be generous, lets wait joyfully, lets be vigilant, our freedom is near. Let us pray: Gracious Father, in your hands I place my life. I ask you Father to fill my heart with your Divine Grace, so I could be open to receive anything that Jesus gives me this Christmas. Amen. Love, Deacon Jorge Cabrera

Our Mission:

Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

First Sunday in Advent Catholic Campaign for Human Development Thank you for your contributions to the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)! Your generous gifts will help CCHD break the cycle of poverty in the United States through better education, improved housing, and economic development. Through CCHD and its beneficiaries, we demonstrate Catholic social teaching and carry out Jesus’ mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor . . . to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18).

Parish Announcements ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE: DEC. 6

During the season of Advent we wait in the darkness of winter for Jesus our Light to come and fill our hearts with hope and joy. As we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus we are remided of God’s generous forgiveness and mercy, available to us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Join us on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. for a bilingual Advent Reconciliation service. Experience the grace of accepting forgiveness and offering forgiveness so that we may live as examples of peace.

THE MEANING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

The Advent Wreath is a Christian tradition symbolizing the passage of the season’s four weeks. There are four candles—three purple and one pink. During Advent one candle is lit each Sunday, symbolizing the Light of Christ coming into the world and representing an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. CONFIRMATION RITE OF ENROLLMENT

Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena A novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe begins on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the church. A novena is a prayer with a specific intention offered nine days in a row. The novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place every evening through Dec. 11--check the bulletin schedule for the exact times.

On Dec. 4 the young men and women preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation will take part in the Rite of Enrollment at the 6:30 p.m. Mass. Students will be invited to come forward and receive a blessing from Fr. Wayne during the Mass. They will also receive a cross as a symbol of their commitment to deepen their relationship with Jesus and their Catholic Faith. This year we have over 30 young men and women from the Religious Education program and St. John Berchmans School preparing to receive this Sacrament on May 10. During the school year they will be meeting with their sponsors, contributing to their community with service hours, studying a special saint, attending a retreat and writing a letter to the bishop sharing why they wish to be confirmed. Please hold the students, their families and their sponsors in your prayers over the next several months.

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: DEC. 8

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Thursday, December 8. Under this title Mary is the national patroness of the United States. This feast day celebrates Mary being conceived without having original sin. This is a Holy Day of Obligation and Masses will be celebrated at 7 a.m.; 8:30 a.m. and a 7 p.m. bilingual Mass.

Jesús viene a salvarnos.
