FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Sunday of Advent

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits Advent I hope your Thanksgiving was great. Even though I didn’t grow up celebrating it, this is one of my favorite holidays. I am truly grateful for all the blessings, even beyond Thanksgiving feast. This Sunday our holiday season continues as we begin Advent. This is a sacred time and I hope and pray that we can fully experience the beauty of this great season. This Advent, try to experience Christmas in a more gradual way. Instead of jumping into Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, al- low the symbols, rich colors, poetry, and music of Advent to wash over you slowly during these weeks. Take time to contemplate the pillars of Advent: Isaiah stoking humanity’s longing for the Redeemer, Mary bringing Jesus into history, and John the Baptist urging us to begin a new life. Maybe even put up your Christmas tree later than usual, closer to Christmas Eve. If you experience “the holidays” as an exhausting trial, let Advent calm you. Let its mystery refocus your life and make you hungry for God.

The Best Advent Ever

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

2

I invite you to consider signing up for this great program. Beginning with this first Sunday of Advent (November 27) and continuing every day until December 26, you’ll receive short inspirational videos, practical tips, or free Christmas music that will help you slow down during the busy Christmas season to focus on what’s really important in life. Don’t miss the opportunity to make this your best Advent (and Christmas) ever. Sign up today! It’s simple, and the only cost is your commitment to live better each day during Advent. Please, see more details at http://dynamiccatholic.com/ best-advent-ever/

St Agatha Christmas Tree Tags I invite you to consider taking a tag form our Tree and support a person or a family in need from St. Agatha Parish (our sharing parish). Please, return the gifts on December 10/11.

New website I am happy to announce that as we begin this new liturgical year, we enter into it with a new website, a new logo and new hopes for the future. We will still work on few things, but the website is ready to use and I invite you to check it out: www.sfaorland.org. Please, keep in mind our parish app is coming soon too. I want to take this opportunity to thank many people who work hard to make this transition and help our parish to make those upgrades. Thank you to Allison Domenick, Paula Belski and all the members of our Tech Committee for working hard on this project. Thank you very much!!!

Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School SCRIP Program Returns to St. Francis Parish! The CJB SCRIP team will once again be in the Narthex selling gift cards at St. Francis of Assisi Parish at all masses the weekend of November 26th & 27th. For your convenience, you will be able to choose your tag from the St. Agatha Christmas Outreach tree on November 26th & 27th, and immediately purchase the gift card of your choice. Use your gift card purchases for shopping for your St. Agatha family, or give the card directly and return your tag the very same day!

This is the ONLY weekend Scrip will be sold at St. Francis. As a member of St. Francis parish, you will now be able to personally benefit from the rebates we earn through the Scrip Program. You may choose to donate to St. Francis, support an RE student or even receive the rebate yourself back in cash. Take advantage of this great service for your personal holiday shopping needs as well. We will have nearly 200 retailers on hand including Jewel, Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s and Visa. New vendors this year include Rocco Vino’s Italian Restaurant and Potbelly Sandwich Shop. Our Am Ex, Discover and Visa cards do not have any activation fees. We also have $5 & $10 cards, perfect for stocking stuffing, treat bags, party prizes and more. If your business or employer gives gift cards to employees as holiday gifts, we can make this purchase quick and easy. No waiting in line for cards to be activated one by one.

A complete list of all available gift cards can be found at the Scrip table. Save time, gas and avoid the hassles of holiday shopping. Our gift cards are the very same cards you would purchase at the store. Payments may be made by cash or check only. If you have any questions about the program, or would like to order a large quantity of one vendor, please contact Corinna Pytel at 478-0710.

Thank you for your support of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School!

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE by, Fr. Ed Upton I want to continue my thoughts on the development of parishes in the Archdiocese. I do so to provide background to the process of Renew My Church. These previous articles, and this as well, describe “external” factors that shaped the development of parish structure in the Archdiocese. In the early part of century, the 20 t h Archbishop Quigley and Cardinal Mundelein dealt with a tremendous influx of Catholics into the city of Chicago. Most were immigrants; some could not speak English, all struggled in this new country. These Bishops dealt with these challenges by establishing parishes that: served many languages and cultures, supported their faith in a neighborhood and at the same time assisted their integration into the American world. 8

Cardinal Stritch (’39 – ’58) dealt with the impact of the Second World War and then the return of the soldiers and the baby boom generation. Again, great growth marked with loyalty to the church and an environment that supported faith and put parish life at the center. Cardinal Meyer (’58 – ’65) – his short time here was marked by his necessary absence because of his attendance at the Second Vatican Council; and then his illness and subsequent death caused by a brain tumor. He was a true leader in the American church. But parish structure remained more or less stable. Cardinal Cody arrived in 1965 as the Second Vatican Council was concluding. As we briefly described, each Archbishop encountered significant challenges as

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK

they began their ministry, most of these came from the “outside” – growth, multiple languages, etc. Cardinal Cody encountered challenges not only external but also internal. The second Vatican Council ushered in significant changes for the life of the Church. Cody’s predecessors analyzed problems with a few trusted advisors and then they made the decision. While some may have disagreed, it was the expectation all would obey. Few priests or laity had any expectation that they would or should be involved in the decision making process. Cardinal Cody was a bishop in that model. It was going to be a rough ride.

ADVENT: Nostalgia vs. Revelation One step into Advent, and we’re suffused with memories. It’s nearly impossible to separate the run-up to Christmas 2016 with holiday seasons of long ago. At the first appearance of evergreens and colored lights, after a few bars of a traditional carol or the delivery of the inaugural Christmas card, we’re plunged into nostalgia for child pleasures and wonder, reindeer and Charles Dickens, long-lost relatives arriving at the door, mysterious packages piling up, sledding or ice skating or snowball fights, cookies, pies, nuts in shells, and clear toy candies that only seem to exist for this special time of year. We approach the holiday season as knee-high citizens of a land of eternal youth. The magnificent weight of Decembers past draws us backward into longing for what was, the way things used to be, and perhaps even for who we once were. For people of faith, of course, there’s also the religious angle to this season. We’ve 11/27/16

got angels zipping in and out of view, bringing good cheer of a higher order. Births are predicted and prophets from centuries past add words of anticipation and caution. Foreign wise men wander against a far horizon, while unprepared parents-tobe scramble to make space in their expectations for a child of destiny. Advent, to be honest, isn’t about any of that. It’s not about the nostalgia we legitimately feel for the most memory-laden season of our youth. Nor is it about events that happened 2,000 years ago, presaged by prophets 800 years before that. Advent is the beginning of the church year. As such, it looks forward, not back. Advent is about the future, not the past. While memory tugs us backward to yesteryear, Advent prods us onward toward revelations of future astonishments. This is a happy sort of tension. We might embrace it rather than seeing it as a contest to be resolved. Nostalgia prompts us to consider that the

world’s salvation is a done deal: A child was born for us, Amen, and all that’s left is the celebration. But as scripture commentator Sister Pamela Smith notes in Days of Light and Darkness, we can’t “recite the poetry and the bombast of the prophets” without suspecting there’s more to come than what already was. “There is still some mysterious appointed time, some coming . . . that promises to startle us and turn our lives topsyturvy.” Advent is not our annual invitation to winter slumber and daydreams about white Christmases and chestnuts roasting on open fires. There are “days to come,” Isaiah reveals, when peace will replace the violence of our churning, restless world. “Stay awake!” Jesus reminds us, so that we don’t miss the signature of those days. Nor the vital decisions each of us has yet to make. Alice Camille
