A note about healing

In Evangelical Lutheran Worship, at the beginning of the Healing Service, we read: “Here all who sense the need for God’s healing in any aspect of their lives may join in prayer for others and themselves. Here each person may come to receive a word of blessing and prayer. Here each one may also receive a physical gesture of healing: the laying on of hands. This sign, first given in baptism, tells us again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who is health and salvation for the world. In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific community nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.

Order of Service The congregation is invited to participate at the places marked with bold type.

Confession & Forgiveness

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

God of overflowing grace, We come to you with repentant hearts. Forgive us for shallow thankfulness. Forgive us for passing by the ones in need. Forgive us for setting our hopes on fleeting treasures. Forgive us our neglect and thoughtlessness. Bring us home from the wilderness of sin, and strengthen us to serve you in all that we do and say; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

There is joy in heaven over every sinner who repents. By the grace of God in Christ Jesus, who gave himself up for us all, your sins are forgiven and you are made free. Rejoice with the angels and with one another! We are home in God’s mercy, now and forever. Amen.

Apostolic Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray together:

O Lord God, tireless guardian of your people, you are always ready to hear our cries. Teach us to rely day and night on your care. Inspire us to seek your enduring justice for all this suffering world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Genesis 32:22-31

(8:30) Kathy Lindquist (10:30) Ken Foster

22 The same night [Jacob] got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. 24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” 27 So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 121

“I to the Hills Lift up Mine Eyes” -Berger

I to the hills will lift mine eyes, from whence doth come mine aid. My safety cometh from the Lord, who heav’n and earth hath made. Thy foot he’ll not let slide, nor will he slumber that thee keeps. Behold, he that keeps Israel, he slumbers not, nor sleeps.

The Lord thee keeps, the Lord thy shade on thy right hand doth stay: The moon by night thee shall not smite, nor yet the sun by day. The Lord shall keep thy soul; he shall preserve thee from all ill. Henceforth thy going out and in God keep for ever will.

2 Timothy 3:14—4:5

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. 4:1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2 proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. 5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel

Luke 18:1-8

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 18th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. 3 In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’ 4 For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ ” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? 8 I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Prayers for Healing

God the Father, you desire the health and salvation of all people. We praise and thank you, O Lord. God the Son, who came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. We praise and thank you, O Lord. God the Holy Spirit, you make our bodies the temple of your presence. We praise and thank you, O Lord. Holy Trinity, one God, in you we live and move and have our being. We praise and thank you, O Lord. Lord, grant your healing grace to all who are sick, injured, or disabled, that they may be made whole. Hear us, O Lord of life. Grant to all who are lonely, anxious, despondent or depressed an awareness of your abiding presence: Hear us, O Lord of life. Mend broken relationships, and restore those in emotional distress or despair to soundness of mind and serenity of spirit: Hear us, O Lord of life. Be with those who struggle with addictions of any kind. Grant them strength against all temptations: Hear us, O Lord of life. Bless physicians, nurses, and all others who minister to the suffering; grant them wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience: Hear us, O Lord of life. Grant to the dying a peaceful, holy death, and with your grace strengthen those who mourn: Hear us, O Lord of life. Restore to wholeness whatever is broken in our lives, in our nation, and in our world: Hear us, O Lord of life. Turn your ear toward us, O God. Heal us, and make us whole. Gracious God, in the waters of Baptism you sealed us by your Holy Spirit and marked us with the cross of Christ, joining us to the death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. Bless all who seek your healing presence this day, and in any and all experiences of suffering draw us more deeply into the mystery of your love, that following Christ in the way of the cross we may also come to know the power of his resurrection; who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen. 6

Laying on of Hands

Those who wish to receive the laying on of hands may come forward during the hymn. Please maintain a respectful distance while waiting your turn in line. Hands will be laid upon your head, and prayer, for a specific need as requested, or general prayer, will be offered.
