Are you using Apologia Science texts with your homeschooler? Would you like to have a hands-on project to accompany the book, act as a reinforcement and study tool, and as a portfolio item? Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks offer all of the interaction of our Learn ‘N Folders™ with the versatility of notebooking. Minibooks corresponding to each module of the text are included, plus your child will be able to file all other paper-based projects and laboratory reports with the module. This will result in a final product that your child can use for review, study and more. The Learn ‘N Folder™ concept works especially well as a portfolio item, either for your own personal use or for use in complying with your state homeschool laws. Either way, it may well become a cherished keepsake of which your child will be proud and to which he may return again and again. Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks feature: • Portable Document Format (.pdf) format for cross-platform use. • Linked table of contents allows you to click on exactly the portion of the file that you need to use. • Printables and instructions are grouped by module/lesson for easy use. • Full lay-out and assembly guides are contained within each module. • Color graphics are included on all minibooks, often offering the student clues about the answers. • Unique Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook format offers the interactivity of Learn ‘N Folders with the versatility of notebooks. Live & Learn Press has teamed up with Apologia Science to offer Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks to accompany Apologia’s elementary and most of the upper level texts. If your child thrives with hands-on interaction, our Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks may be just what you need. The finished product for each module will act as a study guide and reinforcement tool. When the textbook and Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook is completed, you will have a wonderful portfolio item, as well as a treasured piece of memorabilia. Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks combine all of the interaction of our Learn ‘N Folders™ with the versatility of notebooking. For the Elementary Apologia titles, there will be minibooks for the main concepts, including all of the “What do you remember?” questions, as well as the other information found in the lessons. The notebooking activities that are suggested in each © 2010, Live & Learn LLC

lesson can easily be added to the Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook, as can photos of your child doing the suggested activities. With all of our Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks, additional paper-based projects, laboratory reports, photos, illustrations, notebooking pages, and more, may be added to the module sections so that a complete overview of your child’s study will be contained in one location at the end of the year. You can find printable lab report sheets at the following websites, or you may choose to come up with your own format. Either way, filing the finished lab reports at the end of the module will help make your Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook more complete. • http://www.donnayoung.org/science/labsheets.htm, • http://www.pdc.k12.wi.us/forsythe/academics/lab%20report.pdf • http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/science_lab/ (an online form with graphics)
Supplies for completing a Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook are fairly basic. For each notebook you will need copies of the foldable pages printed on regular copy paper. You may choose not to print the layout and assembly guides if you would prefer to read them from the computer screen. You will also need a binder that is at least 2” (D-ring binders seem to work best), cardstock on which to glue the minibooks, scissors, adhesive, tabbed dividers or adhesive tabs, and a gallon-sized zippered plastic bag or a large manila envelope for storage of the minibooks in progress. For a few of the minibooks you may need a brass paper fastener (brad), clear tape, or a stapler. You may choose to decorate the printed divider pages with clip art, photos from magazines or simply adhere the graphic from the module page given before the layout guide. You could also print the module page on cardstock and use adhesive tabs to separate each module.
You may use the back of the divider page to copy tables, formulae, diagrams, and other study aids that you find helpful for the topic. If you assign grades for various sections of the module, those may be recorded on the back of the divider page as well. Place any module summaries, notes, abbreviations, quizzes, tests, reports, laboratory reports, and other paper-based projects in the module section, after the foldable minibooks. That will make your child’s Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook a complete study tool, as well as a record of what was done. It is suggested that you cut and fold a module worth of minibooks at a time, and store them in a gallon-sized zippered plastic bag. As your child encounters a question in the text, or as he gets to a natural stopping point, remove the corresponding minibook from the bag and add the answer. When all of the minibooks are completed for a module, use the lay-out guide that is in© 2010, Live & Learn LLC

cluded in the Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebook file to adhere the minibooks to cardstock which has been three-hole punched. Be sure to punch the cardstock before gluing the minibooks on so that you’re sure the minibooks will fit properly. We always suggest a dry-layout before using any adhesive, just in case you don’t like the placement of the minibooks. You may use any adhesive you like, although we’d suggest one of the following: glue sticks, photo splits, tape runners, double-stick tape, and just about anything that is used for scrapbooking. Be cautious when using liquid glues as too much of it may tend to buckle the papers or cause bleed-through and ruin the look of your minibooks.
The names of the minibooks are added at the end of the assembly guide instructions in which they appear. If you have trouble with the folding, please visit our website, www.liveandlearnpress.com and click on FREEBIES. There you will find short video clips of some of the more troublesome minibooks. If the book you need is not there, please contact one of us and reference the type of book so that we can direct you to further instructions or help you in another way. If you have any suggestions for improvements, we’d love to hear about those too. Debbie Jackson

We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Dr. Jay L. Wile of Apologia Science for his gracious assistance in this endeavor. His line of textbooks have been a daily part of our homeschools since the year of beta-testing for Biology, and it is with great pride that we launch our Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks to accompany this line of textbooks. Our gratitude also to Jeannie Fulbright, author of the elementary level Apologia Science textbooks. We greatly appreciate her willingness to allow us to turn her wonderful materials into Learn ‘N Folder™ Notebooks. We would also like to thank our families who have put up with us working, non-stop at times. We appreciate your patience with us and your tenacity in making sure that we took breaks from time to time, without a science book or laptop in sight. As always, we thank God for giving us Live & Learn. Without Him and His blessings, none of this would have been possible.
