201 N. Church St. • Belleville, IL • 62220 • 618-234-4410

Seniors Live and Learn

The Senior Service Coordination Program helps seniors and disabled residents living in senior public housing maintain their independent living status by providing support services.

techniques. Fire prevention was also discussed, cautioning the residents about clutter, smoking, cooking and space heaters.

Resident meetings are held on a quarterly basis with resident councils/organizations to keep residents aware of beneficial opportunities within the community. Meeting topics have included senior fraud and other helpful programs for seniors.

The program also provides assistance to residents in a variety of ways, including forms and utility assistance applications, counseling, placement of chore helpers, Benefit Access and lease renewals, arthritis exercise and, when necessary, interventions to solve individual concerns.

Residents recently enjoyed lunch at one of the safety meetings where the Belleville Fire Department demonstrated strategies to use in case of fire. Each housing site has a fire safety exit plan and residents are given information on heeding fire alarms and proper escape

If you are 62 or older and/or disabled, there are apartments available throughout St. Clair County. The program office is located at 115 No. 47th St., Suite 106, in Belleville. For more information, contact Service Coordinator Mary Miller at 618-257-0011.

Wellness Activities for June Physical Activity and Blood Pressure Regular physical activity makes your heart stronger. A stronger heart can pump more blood with less effort. If your heart can work less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure. For some people, regular exercise is enough to reduce the dosage or need for blood pressure medication. If your blood pressure is at a desirable level, regular exercise may help keep it from rising as you age. Regular exercise also helps you maintain a healthy weight, another important way to control blood pressure. But to keep your blood pressure low, you need to keep exercising. It takes about one to three months for regular exercise to have an impact on your blood pressure. The benefits last only as long as you continue to exercise. Check out our programs to keep you active and healthy!

NEW! STRONG FOR LIFE will be offered Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m. and is designed for those who have been inactive for an extended time. Chair exercises using a resistance band will increase your strength and overall health. This is an eight-week class and if you complete the eight weeks, you will receive exercise instructions for use at home. This is a FREE class, and you MUST call to register. Call Tracie at 618-234-4410, ext. 7030. ZUMBA GOLD/TONE! Designed for the active older adult and individuals of all physical abilities, this program is a fun, exciting way to get moving. Latinstyle dance and music is used at a lower intensity than Zumba Basic classes. Sessions are held Mondays from 9:30-10:30 a.m., or Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Sheri O’Donnell is the instructor. The cost is $5 per class or $20 for a five-class punch card. TAI CHI* is offered Mondays (beginners) and Tuesdays (advanced) from 12:10-12:50 p.m. The cost is $36 for six weeks. Instructor Delores Gordon has been certified to lead Tai Chi for Arthritis, the Yang Ten Form, SHIBASHI, Tai Chi for wellness and other forms of this practice since 2002. Come and try out one session free to see if it fits your needs! The cost to join the EXERCISE PROGRAM is $75 per year. Senior Companion Program Are you one of the millions of baby boomers who has worked all your life looking forward to the day when you can retire and enjoy your leisure only to find yourself restless and bored now the time has finally come? Why not look to volunteerism as a way of enriching your life while, at the same time, providing support and assistance to others in need? In the Senior Companion Program, part of Senior Corps, the volunteer is matched with an older adult in the community who need assistance with normal everyday tasks. The volunteer contributes 15-40 hours every week shopping, running errands or performing light household chores. This gives the individual you are helping solace knowing there is someone who cares and is willing to put in the extra effort for them. Some of these people are alone and have no one. It also may give their caregiver some respite. It does not take much to show someone you care, but your effort can go a long way in making them feel wanted and important. Some Senior Companions volunteer as much as 40 hours a week, but this is not necessary. You will receive a small hourly stipend, meal, mileage reimbursement, training and guidance as well as supplemental accident and liability insurance. This is a great way to get involved and help others and your community. It is a great use of your time, efforts and talents. Call today for more information at 618-234-4410, ext. 7036.

ATS (Alternate Transportation System) ATS provides curb-to-curb non-emergency paratransit service. The only time a driver is allowed to assist the customer is while on the bus, getting onto or off of the bus using the bus steps, or when a customer is using the lift. Because of insurance and safety reasons, ATS drivers are not required to walk customers to their door, assist at curbs, carry packages or enter the customer’s home. If a customer needs assistance outside of the bus, a family member or aide must accompany them. This person may be provided a free ride by ATS, so please contact the office for details. ATS is proud to be a part of the community. We encourage your comments and suggestions. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feel free to contact ATS for procedure guidelines or just to ask a question.
