Sixth Sunday of Easter

May 25, 2014 THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT

Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles? When Peter and John imposed hands on those who had been baptized, they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the passage from John’s Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and confirmation. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have to suffer for what we believe. In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a “Paraclete,” one who will stand with us to defend us. Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us, “I will not leave you orphans.” He has never left his followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us. Copyright © J. S. Dear Parishioners, Memorial Day has finally arrived and, hopefully, the unofficial beginning of summer will bring us good weather. We certainly don’t want to forget the purpose of Memorial Day - the sacrifices made by the veterans of our country and those of their loved ones. Last weekend our parish was blessed with three celebrations of first holy communions and next week we will have our final one at 1:30 pm in Spanish. We’ll publish the names of all the children and, again, we offer our prayerful congratulations to all the parents. On this coming Saturday, May 31, we will have a time of reflection for all the liturgical ministries of our deanery here at OLA. It will begin with mass at 8:30 am and will be conducted by Sister Ave Clark, O.P. All are welcome. Sister’s theme will be the ministry of Pope Francis. Thursday of this week will be the Solemnity of the Ascension, a holyday of obligation. There will be a vigil mass on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, the regular schedule of weekday masses (in church) at 6:45, 8:30 and 11:45 am and, again, at 7:00 pm in Spanish. The time between the Ascension and Pentecost represents the first novena - nine days of prayer. Let’s join with Mary and the Apostles in the Cenacle as they prayed for the coming of the Holy Spirit and as we pray for that same Spirit’s guidance of the universal church, our diocese and our parish. Lets pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. The 8th Grade students at Holy Angels Catholic Academy portrayed our most beloved American presidents for "Meet the Presidents Day" on May 5th and 6th. This was the culmination of a yearlong project created by the Academy's middle school Social Studies teacher Russell Berry. Each student was responsible for getting thoroughly familiar with their president by doing extensive research, reading a biography and memorizing a famous speech. They were also responsible for creating their costumes. The event was a huge success! We hope to make this an annual tradition.
