Fifth Sunday of Easter

May 18, 2014 THE WAY

In today’s Gospel reading we hear part of Jesus’ discourse at the Last Supper as reported in the Gospel of John. “I am the way and the truth and life,” Jesus assures his disciples. At that time they did not understand what he meant; they wanted easy answers. “Just show us the Father,” Philip begged. But the first and second readings show us how the early church came to understand Jesus’ words. The amazing growth of the church led them to select seven men to do the works of service needed with so many new members. The followers of Jesus had grown in such numbers that Peter could exclaim in his Letter over the fact that Christ, the “rejected stone,” was now the cornerstone on whom the salvation of all the world rests. Down to this present day, he is truly the way, the truth, and the life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we will welcome many of our young parishioners to the reception of the Eucharist. We will have another celebration on June 1st. I wish to congratulate all the children as well as their parents, godparents, catechists, grandparents and extended family. A parish can always see itself being renewed when more of its members receive the Eucharist. The more who receive Christ’s Body and Blood, the holier the parish becomes and this is every pastor’s goal. Everyone is welcome to our May Crowing on Thursday of this week at 10:30 am in the church. The children of Holy Angels Catholic Academy will be our hosts. I just want to remind you of the informative presentation on “End of Life Issues” to be offered tomorrow at 2:00 pm and, again, at 7:00 pm in the lower church at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on 59 Street. All are welcome and no registration is necessary. Our response to the Annual Catholic Appeal is inching up. Thank you to all who have participated so far and thank you to all who will help us reach our goal. Lets pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone P.S. We are very happy to announce that Bishop DiMarzio has assigned Seminarian Rafael Perez to reside here again at OLA for a second year. We welcome him. The 8th Grade students at Holy Angels Catholic Academy portrayed our most beloved American presidents for "Meet the Presidents Day" on May 5th and 6th. This was the culmination of a yearlong project created by the Academy's middle school Social Studies teacher Russell Berry. Each student was responsible for getting thoroughly familiar with their president by doing extensive research, reading a biography and memorizing a famous speech. They were also responsible for creating their costumes. The event was a huge success! We hope to make this an annual tradition.
