The Pope is coming! Thirteen of our parishioners have been selected by lottery to go to the pope's mass in Madison Square Garden. Two of the winners were not able to go on account of health issues so we decided to give those two tickets to our beloved Sisters Edna and Jiasmin to thank them for all of the work they have done for our parish family. Sr. Martina will be going to see the Pope in Philadelphia with a bus load of other parishioners. Like most of you, I will be watching Pope Francis on television!! Of course we would all love to be with him in person, but I think that even by television we will feel the grace that comes from having the successor of St. Peter in our country and city. I have a suggestion: how about we all agree to spend some each day this week in private prayer for Pope Francis and for the spiritual fruits of his visit. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, pray for Pope Francis! St. Anthony, pray for Pope Francis! St. Francis, pray for Pope Francis!

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Sunday Gospel: Mark 9: 30-37 In today’s second reading James counsels Christians living in conflict by contrasting human and heavenly wisdom. Human wisdom is limited, and intertwined with our tendency to sinful self-centeredness and behaviors. Heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceable, merciful, and expressed in good deeds, leading to the perfect happiness God desires for us. All of us are tempted by status, wealth, and power—even Jesus’ disciples, who squabble about who is the greatest! We are like them when our behavior contradicts who we say we are. Reproaching the pastor, complaining about the parish, gossiping, or withholding money harms our parish. Heavenly wisdom shines in everyone who freely gives time to a ministry, prays for parishioners, welcomes and helps the poor and forgotten, and gives to the offertory collection. Following Christ requires hard work, commitment, perseverance, and courage. Success in the Christian life is achieved by becoming not the greatest, but the servant of all. The prize is life eternal.

Living Stewardship Now “Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, selfcontrol with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.”

MASS OF INSTALLATION FOR FR. JONATHAN AS NEW PASTOR OF OLMC

Saturday, October 3rd at 5:00pm Reception to follow in Fatima Hall
