“I succeeded in obtaining a desired job offer.” I enrolled in the Honours program at UWA to broaden and extend my knowledge in Finance. Being awarded the Victor Raeburn Scholarship is a fantastic recognition of all the past effort I have put into my academic career, but also further encouragement to continue this effort during my Honours year. The Victor Raeburn Scholarship is not only awarded to those that have demonstrated past academic success, but those with an interest in the banking industry. In terms of career prospects, I was looking towards entering the corporate finance and investment banking industry, but had been unable to secure any promising job offers. Being awarded this scholarship was further encouragement for me to continue with my applications and I eventually succeeded in obtaining a desired job offer. Aside from securing a job position next year when I graduate, other added benefits from being awarded this scholarship are the available funds to pay for the requisite educational expenses, leaving less time allocated for part-time work, and more time put aside to focus on my studies.

Our scholarship winners

“I now have time to focus on my studies.” The Mining Leaders Scholarship has meant a great deal to me, as the financial stress which consumed a lot of my focus is now non-existent. The scholarship money has been an enormous help, I’ve been able to reduce my working hours to 1 day per week, allowing me to focus on finishing my final year thesis and graduating on time! Another benefit of the Mining Leaders Scholarship has been the numerous opportunities that have arisen as a result of meeting with representatives from the sponsoring companies. I have had the opportunity to discover industries in the mining sector that I previously had never even considered an option. I believe I was the recipient of the Scholarship due to the fact that I have always been working throughout my degree. This work has been predominantly mining-related, including work as a driller’s offsider, a geologist’s assistant, and working at engineering consulting companies. I’ve always looked for opportunities to learn new skills and develop myself further. The other main reason for being awarded this scholarship is my interest in business, through starting up two companies, one which didn’t go very well and another which is still reasonably small but getting larger all the time. I believe that these reasons may have put me in good stead among the other candidates for this particular scholarship. My appreciation and gratitude goes to The University of Western Australia and the supporting companies for providing this great opportunity for final year students like myself.
