St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church Network March/April, 2016 from the Pastor’s desk…

“REPENT, THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND” We are now in the season of Lent, the season of repentance, but how many faithful church goers actually take repentance seriously, and what is repentance anyway? Now I would say that most people would say (and that includes many pastors), that repentance is facing up to your sin, even feeling bad about our sin and then doing something about it. That is, acknowledge our sin and then make a concerted effort to change. This is the common definition of repentance, which is only partially right. If you look up the word repentance in the dictionary or in google it will says this - “Repent, Verb: to feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin: Also, view or think of (an action or omission) with deep regret or remorse”. This is what most people believe is the definition of repentance. This is all well and good, but I am here to tell you that repentance does not mean what you or even the dictionary, says it means. The word repentance comes from the Greek word “metanoeó”. Phonetically it is pronounced (met-an-o-eh'-o) and it does not in any way mean to feel sorry for your sin. It actually means to “change”. So when Jesus says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” He is saying “metanoeó”, and that does not mean feeling sorry or expressing regret for sin. It means, turn a new way! Jesus is saying, change to new direction opposite to the way you have been traveling, because the kingdom of heaven is at hand! And guess what? The kingdom of heaven is still at hand. So, if you, in this season of Lent, feel the tug of the old fallen world a little heavily, then “repent”, change and come back. I hope that this understanding of repentance might lighten your burden this Lenten season. Your servant; Pastor Kyes -1-

We can help with recycling – empty printer ink cartridges are taken to Staples and redeemed for $2.00 each (we receive store credit) - eye glasses in good condition - cell phones - batteries – Jim Johnson has an outlet to dispose of them properly. - Pull tabs from soda cans. The "recycle center is in the Meeting Room PLUS, bring in your Christmas cards and they will be recycled into gift tags and cards for the 2016 Bazaar.

A HOT CROSS BUN is a spiced sweet bun made with currants or raisins and marked with a cross on the top, traditionally eaten on Good Friday.
