SCHOOL OPENS FOR LEARNERS

VENUE Swakopmund

Collection of Reports: School reports can be collected @ the Primary & Secondary school on Thursday, 28 April 17:00-18:00. Parents who are unable to collect reports during this time, are welcome to collect it on Friday, 29 April 2016 between 08:00 and 09:00.

School Fee Accounts: Only reports of learners whose accounts are fully up to date will be released. In order to smooth the process of the cut-off of accounts, the following should be noted: • The accounts office e-mails accounts during the 1st week of every month. • All school fee accounts should be paid in full by Friday, 22 April 2016. School fees are actually payable in advance before the 5th of every month. • ONLY bank guaranteed cheques with two signatures, CASH or card payments will be accepted on 28 & 29 April 2016. Unfortunately no EFT payments can be accepted after Friday, 22 April 2016, due to the processing time. All parents who make EFT payments after 22 April 2016 will also have to collect their children’s reports from the accounts office. • Unfortunately, we are now forced to be stricter about this, as many parents make arrangements and then do not honour them. • Reports not collected by 09h00 will be kept in the safe and can be collected at the start of the 2nd term. Reports are not posted, as many reports are lost in the mail, or arrive at their address after school has started.

Miss Windhoek Gymnasium Finalists:

Gr 8: Inaugural Ceremony: The Grade 8’s inaugural ceremony will take place on the first day of the second term (Monday, 23 May 2016). All grade 8’s must come to school on that day with their Gommie tie, but bring along their blazer & red Gimmie tie (knotted). During the ceremony, the matrics will replace the Gommie tie with their Gimmie tie and then they can put on their blazer as well. This is a special tradition every year, and we look forward to welcoming our Gommies as proud Gimmies! Grade 8 learners must please purchase their school blazers and ties in time!

Thank you! A note from the library staff of Auas Hills Retirement Village: “Verskriklik baie dankie vir al Windhoek Gimnasium se mense wat vir ons so baie lekker boeke gestuur het! Dit het ons biblioteek ’n heerlike hupstoot gegee en ons gaan nou só lekker lees! Nog boeke sal altyd welkom wees - ons sal dit mooi versorg en waardeer hier!”

Pedestrian Gates on Sides of Entrance & Exit Gates: For the safety of our learners, we have installed a pedestrian gate on both sides of the Entrance Gate, as well as 20m to the Eastern side of the Exit Gate. This has been done for the safety of our learners – so that they do not have to use the same gate as vehicles do, especially during peak hours. Please encourage your child to use these gates, and then to walk towards school on the paved walkway next to the hockey field.

`

We would like to announce and congratulate the 12 finalists for Miss Windhoek Gymnasium 2016. The pageant will take Wednesday, 22 June 2016.

Please SAVE WATER: Many people are still not aware (enough) of the really serious water need and problems we have in Windhoek. If the people in Windhoek continue using water the way they are, there will be no water in the taps by October this year. We have the responsibility to drastically reduce our water usage. Here are some practical measures to save water: Read your water meter regularly (daily or weekly) in order to know what your water usage is. Do not plant lawn or water intensive plants during drought conditions – stick to indigenous and hardy plants. Do your dishwashing in a basin, not under running water. Take short showers instead of a bath. Turn off the water while soaping hands and brushing teeth. Use washing machine only for a full load – think carefully before putting clothing in the wash if it is necessary to be washed. Recycle water from washing machine into garden. Shower in a large basin – re-use water in garden. Control toilet rinsing. “If it’s Yellow let it mellow; if it’s brown flush it down”. Reduce flush volume by inserting water bottles in the system. Do not wash cars. Waterless car wash services can be used. Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and walkways. Check for leaking taps/toilets and repairs promptly.

Windhoek Gimmie – LOVE LOCKS: OVERVIEW A lovelock, sometimes known as a love padlock, is a padlock, which couples lock to a public object (most often a bridge) to symbolize their everlasting love. Typically, the sweethearts' names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, which is locked onto the object and the key is thrown away (most often into a river or a lake) to symbolize their unbreakable love. Love padlocks have existed for quite some time, though there are no certain sources for their origin. In Europe, love padlocks started appearing in the early 2000s and at an increasing number of locations worldwide. The original myths, however, can be traced to several decades in the past.

HISTORY The most famous love padlock myth comes from a Serbian city where the bridge, Most Ljubavi (meaning the Bridge of Love), in the spa town of Vrnjačka Banja remains constantly decorated with hundreds of love padlocks. This tradition was supposedly created before World War II, when an innocent schoolmistress named Nada died from a broken heart when her fiancéé, Relja, broke off their engagement and married another woman. From that point on, local girls from the town visited the bridge where Nada and Relja used to meet, and leave padlocks that held the names of the girls and theirs loved ones, in order to protect their loves.

LOCATIONS There are many popular places for leaving love padlocks around the world, including Germany, Italy, Serbia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, United States, Russia, South Korea, China, and, probably most famous, the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris, which connects the Palais du Louvre and the Insititut de France over the Seine.

`

GIMMIE TRADITION The tradition of love padlocks is an expression of hope, humanity and love, connecting people around the world. Now you can express your love and commitment to someone special by locking a love lock together to our newly constructed fence at the semi-permanent classrooms, next to the Hockey Field. What you do with the key is up to you: either keep it safe, on a necklace or key chain, or dispose of it somewhere special.

The fences have been designed with the weight of these locks in mind, and is a wonderful opportunity to become part of this ancient tradition, and a brand new tradition at our school!
