Visions of Humanity: 20th Century Chinese Paintings from the Jones Collection

Highlights from 2010 – 2012 Asian As Curator of Asian Art, I responded to our Director’s challenge to set new trends in the Museum field by curating an exhibition that drew upon three local collections as well as the Museum’s collection and presented objects from many different cultures in Sacred Word and Image: Five World Religions. The exhibition was based on themes such as Divine Beauty, Language as Transmission, Symbols of Power, Sacred Spaces and Places and Otherworldly Visions and Miraculous Events to present examples of the sacred written word and images of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam in comparison together. The Museum’s first totally electronic publication designed for computer or iPad accompanied the exhibition, downloadable to anyone at anytime anywhere in the world. Highlights in the Latin American Art Department The Phoenix Art Museum’s Latin American Art Department has a new curator. Dr. Vanessa Davidson, the Shawn and Joe Lampe Associate Curator of Latin American Art, arrived in October, 2011, having previously worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Dr. Davidson is currently preparing two noteworthy exhibitions. The first, The Politics of Place: Latin American Photography, Past and Present, will be on view in the Orme Lewis Gallery from August 4 to December 2, 2012. The second, entitled Chaos, Order, and the Space Between: Contemporary Latin American Art from the Diane and Bruce Halle Collection, features artworks created throughout Latin America from the mid-1940s to 2010. This landmark exhibition will be held in Steele Gallery from February 6 to May 6, 2013, and offers many opportunities for didactic programs and educational engagement. Photography The greatest highlight for photography was the creation of the support organization, In Focus.

Western and American The West Select, our new annual fundraising exhibition and sale, is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the finest artists working in Western American subject matter today. With the departure after nearly 40 years of the Cowboy Artists, creating a new and diverse representation of the West was a significant challenge that touched many of us at the Museum. Through the dedication and support of the Men’s Arts Council, the initial year’s results exceeded our expectations both artistically and financially and only hints at the great things to come. We now can invite a variety of different artists year to year, offering patrons a broad look at Western art in a wide range of styles and subject matter that is fitting for our cosmopolitan city. Thanks to the continued contributions of the Western Art Associates and individual donors for supporting acquisitions from the exhibition, The West Select also allows the Museum to dramatically expand our holdings in contemporary Western art. Fashion The exhibition Fashion Independent: The Original Style of Ann Bonfoey Taylor highlighted one of the most important donations in the history of the collection given by Vernon Taylor, Jr. and Family in 2008 and 2011. Garnering significant national and international press and a roster of high profile visitors the exhibition was a landmark for Fashion Design. The purchase of new mannequins that will give sufficient stock to enable the Fashion Design Department to travel exhibitions was made possible by The Bernard Seltz Foundation and Arizona Costume Institute.
