WHAT A CELEBRATION! The Museum’s 90th anniversary has really shifted my perspective of history. When I talk with people who are in their 80s and 90s, I think about how they and the Museum have seen the same passage of time. I seem to be hyper-aware of how much has changed over the years. For example, in the Museum’s early history, furniture for rooms was custommade. Now we are more likely to see what IKEA has available! I marvel at the hand-written financial ledgers from as recently as the 1980s as we maximize technology today for volunteer hour tracking, sharing documents, and administering surveys. But of course, the core purposes of the organization really haven’t changed. We are still in the business of sharing and documenting the impact that Swedes and Scandinavians have had in America through our programs and exhibitions. We are still a community of people who gather together to celebrate cultural traditions. We kicked off our anniversary celebration last fall by asking our members to become 90th anniversary benefactors. Boy did they respond! Thirty-two families, individuals, foundations and corporations gave extra support in our anniversary year. The main celebration for this momentous occasion took place in conjunction with our annual Spring Ting dinner and auction on May 7th. It was a glorious evening of fellowship and fun as over 150 people gathered to continue our effort to raise money for the Museum and reflect on its history. Here’s to the next 90 years of celebrating and making history!

EXHIBITIONS & CONSERVATION ASHM’s 90th anniversary year served up plenty of interesting research, exhibition development, and professional collaboration opportunities. We had an ambitious slate of exhibitions, from near and far, for our guests to explore and enjoy. Workers of the World, Awaken! The Life and Legacy of Joe Hill September 4, 2015 - September 6 2016

Workers of the World, Awaken! The Life and Legacy of Joe Hill opened on the balcony level in time for Labor Day weekend in 2015—the 100th anniversary year of the murder of SwedishAmerican trade unionist, Joe Hill (Joel Emmanuel Haaglund). The Museum’s Senior Curator, Carrie Hogan, worked with labor scholar and guest curator, Alexis Buss, and UArts design intern, Emily Pierettini, to produce this in-depth and visually engaging exhibition. ASHM was able to travel a digital version of the exhibition to the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation in Oregon and it will open at Bishop Hill in 2017. United Stockholms of America September 13, 2015 - February 28, 2016

United Stockholms of America, a beautiful, large-format photography exhibition by artist Charlie Bennet opened at the Museum’s Annual Meeting. Bennet’s odyssey through eight American towns called Stockholm captures the pride and splendor of each remote landscape. The exhibition, which closed on February 28, 2016, was a visual adventure and much appreciated by visitors. Deadweight by Pauliina Pöllänen January 11, 2016 - April 14, 2016

We were excited to have a custom art installation on view this past spring by Finnish artist Pauliina Pöllänen. Pauliina was an Artist Resident at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, and showcased several of her pieces in a Scandinavian group exhibition there entitled Undercurrents: A Selection of Contemporary Nordic Ceramics. Pauliina’s piece for the Museum, which she called Deadweight, was made from glazed porcelain and rope (in Finnish colors) and hung in the alcove of the Grand Hall stairs. Collaborating with Pauliina and the Clay Studio was an excellent experience that we hope will foster similar opportunities in the future.

The World of Jean Sibelius February 2016

We helped celebrate the 150th anniversary of Finnish violinist and composer, Jean Sibelius, with The World of Jean Sibelius, featured in the Museum’s Josef Frank Gallery. The exhibit was created and produced by Pekka Hako, a Finnish writer, editor and member of the Finnish Government’s Sibelius Jubilee Working Committee. The exhibition banners portray the life of Sibelius using historic photos of Sibelius, his family, and colleagues. Flowers & Monsters: Hand-carved Furniture by Karl von Rydingsvärd April 3, 2016 - December 31, 2016

Carrie spent two years conducting research to curate ASHM’s original exhibition, Flowers and Monsters: Hand-carved Furniture by Karl von Rydingsvärd. A Dalsland native, Karl Arthur von Rydingsvärd (1863 – 1941), was not only an important Swedish artisan during the American Arts and Crafts movement; he was also a highly influential teacher who spread the essential Arts and Crafts ideal that anyone, including women, could carve and create furniture. Carrie worked closely with the Milliken and Dera families who generously loaned their private collection for a one-time exhibition of von Rydingsvärd’s work. The pieces on view came directly from the carver’s home in 1941 after he, and his wife Ida von Rydingsvärd, died. The exhibition has drawn the attention of furniture enthusiasts and collectors, as well as the New York Times. Since the exhibition opened,

4

Carrie has been contacted by other owners of KvR furniture who have come to visit and compare their items with those in the exhibition. Thanks to conservation student Leila Sabouni, conservator Vicki Cassman and her University of Delaware art conservation students, all of whom donated their time and services in-kind, the KvR collection and many pieces from ASHM’s furniture collection were cleaned, repaired, and conserved. 90th Anniversary Case May 2016 - Present

In honor of the Museum’s anniversary, and the theme of this year’s Spring Ting, Carrie curated a case in the Grand Hall highlighting 90 years of culture and community at ASHM. A bust of the Museum’s founder, Amandus Johnson, along with a rare promotional postcard and pre-1925 fragments excavated from the Museum’s grounds during the 2014 renovation, are on view. One of the large, copper eagle ornaments from the top of ASHM’s original flagpoles greets guests from the Grand Hall alcove. A Community on the Praire: Bishop Hill, Illinois May 2016 - September 2016

A Community on the Prairie: Bishop Hill, Illinois, was originated by the Bishop Hill State Historic Site, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, and organized by the Bishop Hill Heritage Association. The panel exhibition describes the formation of the Bishop Hill Colony by Swedish immigrants, the dissolution of the colony, and the growth of the village of Bishop Hill into modern times. It was a highlight for many Midwesterners visiting us during the Augustana Lutheran Heritage Association’s Valedictory Celebration in June 2016.

EDUCATION & PUBLIC PROGRAMS Love history, will travel! The overarching theme that can be found in ASHM Education and Public Programs last year was travel. The Education Department had a record breaking year and served 2,600 students and families through 95 Museum and Outreach visits, surpassing previous year’s highest counts! This is in large part due to the incredible popularity of the 2015 outreach program Viking Heroes & Norse Sagas. This program was developed to serve the Summer Library Reading theme, “Every Hero Has a Story”. Though Vikings are always a popular topic, librarians especially loved that the program went beyond Thor as a superhero and families learned the reality of Norse life. The Museum also successfully piloted a series of new outreach programs designed for the Prekindergarten audience called My 1st Museum. ASHM conducted numerous off-site programs at a low income daycare center in South Philadelphia. Based on ASHM’s popular Toddler Time, these programs are designed to strengthen early learning skills and introduce world culture to children ages 3-5. The My 1st Museum programs will continue to be developed and offered to a wider audience during the 2016/2017 school year. Another first for ASHM was an extended outreach program opportunity to the town of Rowe, Massachusetts. Rowe Elementary School is located in an isolated mountain region near the Vermont border. The entire population of the town is under 350 people. Each year the children of Rowe select a different country and culture of the world to study. Last fall, Sweden was chosen and the tightknit teaching staff reached out to ASHM for resources. Lauren Burnham, the Education and Public Programs

Manager, put forth the idea of taking all of ASHM’s Outreach programs to the small school and providing programs for each grade level PreK-6th. Lauren and the Marking Assistant, Petra Tieu, packed up an SUV’s worth of supplies and headed north, five hours north to be exact. ASHM was able to teach every grade level at the school and families from the local community about Sweden today and the historical ties it has with America via the New Sweden Colony. Children weren’t the only ones benefitting from travel experiences last year. ASHM also sponsored

its first long distance trip to Chicago in September. An intrepid group of Museum members and staff flew from Philadelphia to O’Hare and explored the Swedish roots of the city. Trip highlights included a private tour of North Park University by Dean Charles Peterson, a guided tour of the Vikings exhibit at the Field Museum, an architecture boat tour, a guided tour of the Swedish American Museum by Director Karin Abercrombie, exploration of the Swedish neighborhood Andersonville, and a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, ASHM also hosted a trip to New York City in December to tour the Bard Graduate Center’s exhibit, Swedish Wooden Toys. Travelers were treated to lunch at Fika and spent the afternoon shopping and taking in the ambiance of Christmas in the Big Apple. New Sweden History Conference 2015: Power and Politics in New Sweden 1638-1655 The 2015 New Sweden History Conference investigated the political powers involved in the New Sweden Colony. The conference explored the mechanisms by which New Sweden’s governors

maintained and exercised influence in their enduring struggle for control of the Delaware Valley and its access to the riches of North America. Speakers analyzed the governing styles and effectiveness of political figures such as Peter Minuit, Peter Hollander Ridder, Johan Printz, Peter Stuyvesant, and the influence the Lenape had on political decisions. Magdalena Naum from Oulu University in Finland moderated the fascinating analysis of political authority in the Delaware Valley during

the seventeenth century. The conference was held at the Lazaretto Ballroom in Essington, PA, and was attended by over 70 scholars, students, and history aficionados.

MARKETING The Museum had an exciting year of media coverage. With our varied exhibits, from Joe Hill to hand-carved wooden furniture, we gained the attention of several TV, radio and well respected print outlets over the course of the several months. Workers of the World, Awaken! The Life and Legacy of Joe Hill, which opened on Labor Day in 2015, was featured on Philadelphia’s local public radio, WHYY, in their “Newsworks” program. Guest curator Alexis Buss was also interviewed on NBC10, as part of their Labor Day news coverage. In December, CBS reporter Meisha Johnson did a piece on the Museum as part of her “Dream Drives” segment, which looks at different, must-see places in the region. Meisha covered the Museum’s galleries and gift shop, while also highlighting our Toddler Time program, which was in session during her visit. In the spring of 2016, our current exhibition, Flowers & Monsters: Hand-carved Furniture by Karl von Rydingsvärd was written up in the New York Times, including an interview with Senior Curator, Carrie Hogan. And Museum volunteer and board member, Kristina Johnson O’Doherty was profiled in the Philadelphia Inquirer, a piece which focused largely on her connection and work at the Museum. Carrie Hogan, Tracey Beck and the Museum were also featured in the documentary film “Forgotten Journey,” produced by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation. The Museum’s overall coverage for events and exhibits continues to be strong, with regular mentions and write ups in the Metro, the Courier Post, Philly.com, Visit Philly, Uswishunu, the South Philly Review, Geekadelphia and a variety of other websites and blogs highlighting things to do, see and eat in our region. Our use of social media is ever increasing, with Facebook having just under 3,000 followers, Twitter just over 1,000, and Instagram over 300. While our advertising has been shifting to more online platforms, we did targeted print ads for Flowers & Monsters, with ads in Maine Antiques and Antiques Digest, which also yielded some editorial. We also dabbled in radio advertising, with our Lucia Fest running as a sponsor during WXPN’s Kids Corner in late November 2015. The Museum’s Instagram Page.

BUILDING AND TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES The Museum and its systems had some significant upgrades this year! We had a new computer network built to better suit the needs of a modern office. Thanks to the generosity of many givers at Spring Ting, we were also able to replace the Museum’s phone system, which was over 30 years old! We have gradually been converting the Museum’s lightbulbs to high efficiency bulbs. This project started in earnest in March of 2015 and since that time, we have seen a significant reduction in the Museum’s electricity use. Thanks to the generosity of the Davenport Family Foundation, we were able to replace the chiller, a major component in the air conditioning system, after it failed at the end of the summer of 2015. The new chiller is also helping us achieve energy savings. Unfortunately, a major January snowstorm resulted in about 20% of the upper level of the roof being torn off. We have used a portion of the insurance payment for the roof repair to hire a consulting firm, Levine & Company, to look at the whole roof and identify short and long term needs to be sure our building is protected.

MEMBERSHIP Membership has continued to do well this fiscal year and we have taken advantage of more streamlined and accurate reports. Our PastPerfect software program gives us a clear picture of our membership statistics and revenue. Our Household membership category, the largest by far, grew by 11% from June of 2015 to June of 2016. Another category that continues to grow is our Library memberships. ASHM has become a popular addition to many local libraries’ Museum pass program, where patrons can check out a membership card and visit the Museum for free. We have almost 10 libraries that offer an ASHM pass, most of them are located in Delaware County. This has been a fantastic way to bring new visitors, especially families, to the Museum.

VOLUNTEERS With another Annual Meeting comes reflection on all that has been accomplished during the last year and a reminder of the true value of ASHM volunteers. From largescale special events to dayto-day operations, ASHM could not function without the dedication of volunteers. In 2015, the Museum was pleased to present the Amandus Johnson Volunteer Service Award to Karin Hampel. Karin is a life-long member of the Museum, and an active member the Auxiliary for over 40 years. She is perhaps best known as the Museum’s resident pianist, who for decades accompanied the children in our annual Lucia performance, as well as played for many a years’ Spring Ting, not to mention at numerous concert events.

In addition to the Amandus Johnson Award, the Museum strives to make every volunteer feel appreciated throughout the year. In gratitude for their hard work, volunteers were invited to an exclusive brunch and private tour of The Clay Studio, including the workspace of Finnish artist Pauliina Pöllänen, last February. Volunteers also continue to be recognized in April during Volunteer Appreciation month with coupons from member organizations of the Philadelphia Cultural Alliance good towards admission at various Museum, arboretums, and historic sites in the area.

THE HONEYMOON CONTINUES…. Since we began a relationship with Jeffrey Miller Catering in Fall of 2013, facility rentals have become a much bigger part of many dimensions of the Museum. As of June 2016, we have hosted 31 events, and the Museum’s share of the revenue was $104,330. Of that revenue, $33,416 was paid back to Jeffrey Miller for his $365,000 investment in our facility. In calendar year 2016 we will have 34 parties, nearly all of them weddings! Our current average revenue per party is $3600. In addition to the financial rewards, these events help us to broaden our audience. The number of people coming to the Museum for rental events has more than doubled to 4826 per year (from 1500-2000 before JAM). It is fun to see people posting about the weddings and tagging ASHM on both Instagram and Facebook!
