Myrna Valenzuela proudly displays the keys to her very first home with her son Pedro, 7, and her family partner, Susan Durham. “This is a great opportunity because it’s a hand up to buy a house. We are very thankful…” she said. “It’s our own, own house!” Myrna received the keys to her home on May 24, 2012 at a dedication ceremony for her and her nine new Habitat neighbors, whose homes were started on Building Freedom Day, September 11, 2011. Ten homes were started to not only memorialize the victims of that tragic day in 2001, but also to celebrate hope, community and the American dream. Photo by Kristy Little.

• 9 families in southern Mexico receive new homes; and 20 additional families receive improved household air-quality through a cooking stove project in partnership with other Habitat affiliates.

May 2013 will mark the third year that The Home Depot Foundation has brought hundreds of volunteers out to our site for one big, orange build day! In this photo, Christina Borboa and her daughter, Liana, raised the walls on their future home with the help of Home Depot volunteers in April, 2012. “Each day I want to pinch myself to see if it’s real,” Christina said. “It’s a really big blessing for me. I never thought I’d own my own home.” Photo by Amanda Thomas.

• We’ve started building at two new subdivisions called Copper Vista I and II. Together, these properties will yield a total of 58 lots and will include innovative two-story floor plans – a Habitat Tucson first. • We’re going to be welcoming 350 Home Depot volunteers back to our sites in May, 2013 to help us start two homes and work on several more projects at our new Copper Vista community.

volunteers It takes more than 2,200 hours of volunteer time to build a Habitat home. Volunteers, along with supporters like you, assist Habitat Tucson in every element of our operations, and we could not exist without them!

Over the years, many individuals, foundations, businesses and service groups have contributed time, talent, and treasure to complete 11 Women Build homes in Tucson for local families. Our 12th Women Build home was started on September 11, 2012 and will be dedicated in May, 2013. The purpose of the Women Build program is to empower women while providing them with experience in construction. The women pictured above celebrated National Women Build Week in May, 2012 with a fun build day that included a clinic by a Lowe’s home improvement expert! Photo contributed by Emily Herrell.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES Through our new Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI), and with your support, we are serving more families this fiscal year by empowering residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life. Our new NRI services include: • Weatherization - provides up to $2,500 in upgrades to help make older homes more energy efficient. • A Brush with Kindness - provides exterior home repairs so that individuals can live in safe, decent homes and restore hope and pride to their neighborhood.

The goal of Habitat for Humanity Tucson’s A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) program is to help families maintain the exterior of their homes while bringing volunteers and neighbors together by helping a homeowner in need. For our very first ABWK day, Northwest Mutual sent 20 volunteers from their internship program to help improve Walter Jenkins’ home. “My jaw still hurts from smiling. This was the most unexpected and beautiful experience since I married my wife. The amount of volunteers who showed up and the contractors were wonderful,” Walter said. You support Habitat by donating, shopping and volunteering at the HabiStore! Shopping, donating, and volunteering at the HabiStore is a great way for anyone who wants to support Habitat to be part of the solution. Last year, HabiStore netted more than $272,000 and provided enough funds to build three Habitat homes! Learn more about the HabiStore at www.habitattucson.org/habistore or by calling (520) 889-7200.

• Critical Home Repair - this program is in its initial planning and funding stages and will revitalize homes through repairs that alleviate health, life and safety/code issues. • Volunteer Matching Program - through this program, we offer assistance with neighborhood improvement projects by providing volunteers to match the number of community members involved and by supplying tools and supervision.

With your help, the HabiStore serves thousands of households across our community by selling discounted new and used home improvement items. All proceeds from the HabiStore fund Habitat Tucson’s mission. • The HabiStore is located at 935 W. Grant Rd and is open to the public Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Check out our new Smallsreed Room where we keep all our fine furniture and other high value donations! • During fiscal year 2011/2012, the HabiStore diverted more than 250 tons of materials from the landfill and received donations of home improvement items from over 6,000 people. • The HabiStore accepts donations of cars, trucks, boats, and other vehicles through our Cars for Homes program. The proceeds support Habitat’s mission! Learn more at www.HabitatTucson.org/cars.
