WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP?

“Stewardship is the ability to share one’s gifts of life, time, talents, and resources with others with no strings attached and no conditions.” -the late Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Seattle “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him and say, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?” And the king will say to them in reply, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:34-40)

Stewardship In Our Parish Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure - Many times in scripture we are reminded to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. We are called, to take care of others, to share what we have, to return a portion of our gifts and harvest to God. We are reminded always to do this with purity of intention and according to our means. Guided by prayer, each Catholic makes a decision to live out the Christian life as a good steward. This decision is an intentional act intended to thank God for all of His blessings by returning to Him a portion of the time, the talent, and the treasure He has given us. Once a year, usually during an effort in the parish, each Catholic household in our Diocese should plan how the stewardship of time and talent will be a part of its lifestyle and how the stewardship of treasure will be a part of its budget. This plan is then lived throughout the year in a regular, consistent manner. The stewardship plan includes a commitment to donate a set percentage of one's time, one's talent, and one's income to the Church and other charities. All Souls Catholic Church is continually striving to build a vibrant community in which every parishioner plays an active role. We welcome your talents and gifts in our parish community! Guided by the Holy Spirit, we believe that we can make a difference in our community, in our diocese and in our world.

parish and for all in need. Father, give us generous hearts. Help us to manage our finances and to offer first fruits to you. As your faithful disciples, we ask this for our-

selves and for all the faithful everywhere, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. iv

We hope that this Ministry book will encourage you to share your time, talent and treasure to help build up the kingdom of God at All Souls. School Website: www.allsoulscatholicschool.org All Souls Catholic School—Academic Excellence through Catholic Faith Formation All Souls Catholic Church, established in 1888, is one of the oldest existing parishes in Central Florida. Located in Historic Sanford, nestled among the Oak Trees and brick streets, All Souls Catholic School was established in 1954 adjacent to the Historic Chapel to serve the community of Sanford. All Souls Catholic Church History Catholic life in Sanford dates back to 1882, making it one of the oldest in Catholic history in Central Florida. The All Souls' Church that was destroyed by fire in 1931 was built in 1887-1888 by the first missionary of the Diocese of St. Augustine in the area, Father F.P. Swembergh. Our ministries serve the people of the Sanford area – providing tremendous amounts of food, clothing and shelter to those in need, care for the unborn, small children, the elderly and those homebound is a constant concern for the people of All Souls. We strive to provide a healthy, loving and nurturing atmosphere to the people in our parish and our community. Today All Souls Catholic Parish is growing faster than ever. We currently have 1,697 families (4,941 members). The parish completed the building of the beautiful new church on SR 46 in 2008. The next phase will be the building of the new school. If you are interested in reading and learning more about the history of our parish, please visit the parish office. We have a comprehensive history of the parish prepared by our parish historian, Mrs. Kim Peters.

Are you a registered member of our parish? The importance of registration. Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never officially register in the parish. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptism or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register you need to complete a registration form. The Registration form may be found at the Welcome Table in the Narthex of the church, the parish office during the week or by downloading and completing the online form www.allsoulssanford.org. OUR PARISH MINISTRIES & ORGANIZATIONS ADORATION Coordinator: M ary Butler Phone: 407.321.0029 Eucharistic Adoration is an expression of our love for Jesus, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Come and spend an hour with Jesus in our Adoration Chapel open Monday through Friday from 9am to 9pm. Please visit the parish office prior to your first visit for special information. ALTAR LINENS Coordinator: Diane Croft Phone: 407. 322.1165 E-mail: [email protected] With deep love and reverence for the Holy Eucharist, the Altar Linen Ministry cares for the sacred linens on a rotating schedule. Training is provided on how to care for these special linens that contain the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This ministry is made up of teams who, behind the scenes in their own homes, reverently launder and care for the purificators, corporals and altar cloths used on the altar at Mass. ALTAR SERVERS Coordinator: Father Ed McCarthy Phone: 407.322.3795 Altar Servers assist the Presider at weekly or special Masses. Core Altar Servers assist in a leadership role in helping the Presider, and help direct the less experienced servers. Youth, grades 4-12 are eligible to serve. Altar Servers must have completed third grade, and must have received First Holy Communion. Core Altar Servers must have completed eighth grade and must have served at least one year. Being an altar server requires both a willingness to serve our parish and a 7

sense of dedication. It also calls for an understanding of personal responsibility as others are depending upon your assistance at our Liturgical Celebrations. Servers arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled Mass, and serve the duration of the Mass, which is generally one hour long. Altar Servers and Core Servers have meetings periodically, as announced in the bulletin. The parish provides training. Fingerprinting/Safe Environment Training is required for those over 15 years of age. AUDIO/VISUAL MINISTRY Coordinator: M elinda V elez Phone: 407.505.8881 This ministry provides sight and sound to enhance the congregation’s participation in Liturgy by recording the weekly homily and placing on the website: www.allsoulssanford.com. ART AND ENVIRONMENT Coordinator: A nnette L ommerse Phone: 407.322.8385 E-mail: [email protected] Volunteers assist in keeping the Church and Chapel adorned with flowers and greenery throughout the year and during special Liturgical Seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter). EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION Coordinators: David M cGhee E-mail: [email protected] This ministry fulfills monthly or daily assignments for the distribution of Holy Communion under the direction of the priest at all Masses and special Liturgies. An Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister shares the Bread of Life with others. Training, and a Diocesan Mandate is needed. Fingerprinting/Safe Environment Training is required. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION TO THE 8

HOMEBOUND AND HOSPITALIZED Coordinator: A dam Heyboer Phone: 407.697.4402 E-mail: [email protected] One of the largest and most important ministries in our parish is the sharing of the Holy Eucharist to those individuals who are homebound, hospitalized or living in nursing or personal care homes. We have many elderly and infirm members who cannot attend regular Sunday Mass. Many of these individuals have been active, lifelong members of the parish and miss participating in the liturgy. Extraordinary Eucharistic ministers to the homebound help to fill that gap. Through the sharing of the Word of God and Holy Communion, the minister now “carries” the care of the parish family to the homebound and sick. This is a most important and very spiritually rewarding ministry. Training and a Diocesan Mandate is needed for this ministry. Fingerprinting/Safe Environment Training is required.

Training and reading for the Lector coordinator and attending a Lector workshop may be required. SACRISTANS Coordinator Church: Don L eFils 9

CANTORS/PSALMISTS: Coordinator: David M cGhee, Director of Music and Liturgy Phone: 407.322.7003 E-mail: [email protected] The role of cantor was restored to Roman Catholic liturgical practice by reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The role of cantor has come to signify a number of things: animate the sung worship of the assembly, share in proclaiming the word of God, particularly when acting as Psalmist; lead the assembly in its songs, refrains and acclamation. This ministry requires a great deal of competence. “The cantor must be a singer, proclaimer, liturgical minister and spiritual leader.” ~Handbook for Cantors, Diana Kodner Sotak. In addition to these qualities, abilities, and commitment, every cantor at All Souls Church must have some relationship to either the Spanish, Contemporary, or Parish Choirs. Meeting and/or Rehearsal as designated by the Music Director. CONTEMPORARY CHOIR Coordinator: Nancy Pfingsten, A ssociate M usic Director 11

THE MARIST LAITY GROUP President: Dolores R omano Spiritual Moderator: Fr. Ed M cCarthy Phone: 516.233.0369 E-mail: [email protected] Marists are people who are called to do the work of Mary in her name and with her spirit. We are members of the Society of Mary, a family of many branches--priests, brothers, sisters and lay people. Mary was a lay woman who brought Jesus Christ to the world, lived a hidden life in Nazareth and was present at the birth of the Church. We believe Mary wants to be present to the Church now--through us. Marists believe Mary graciously chooses individuals to join her family and to do her work and to live by her spirit. Mary’s life was one of prayer and action. God’s will was her first concern; God’s interests were her only interests. Mary was the first disciple of Jesus. Now, she is a compassionate and merciful mother to us all. She is all embracing; no one is excluded from her motherly care. Mary fulfills her mission of bringing Jesus to us by teaching us to live a simple life of service, hidden and unknown, a life of humility, poverty, self-denial and ardent love of neighbor, a life that says no to greed, pride, and power--forces prevalent in this modern consumeristic society. Those who receive the spirit of Mary also are sent on a mission to bring Jesus to others. Since Vatican II there has been a rediscovery of the role of the laity as evangelizers. Lay people have a unique opportunity to evangelize the family, the neighborhood and the workplace. Lay Marists evangelize by bringing a Marian presence to the church and to the world. We meet on the second Saturday of every month at 9:30 am in the Totally Yours Study Center at 1434-1438 West First Street, Sanford. Please join us!

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please call the parish office 407.322.3795. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person's condition becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. HOLY ORDERS Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Holy Orders at the Last Supper when he entrusted to the Apostles the mission to continue his ministry. It is called “orders”

because

it

contains

three

degrees or “orders”: the episcopal order (bishops), the presbyteral order (priests), and the diaconal order (deacons). Men are called forth from among Christ’s faithful people to serve in these orders through the laying on of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit. Those men ordained bishops and priests are ordained unto the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Those men ordained deacons are ordained unto the ministry of Christ the servant. Do you feel Christ is calling you to the priesthood or the religious life? Please call the parish office to speak to one of our priests, 407.322.3795. CATHOLIC FUNERALS A Catholic funeral, like all funerals, is a time of sadness and mourning. However, in the Catholic faith there is joy in the belief that a funeral represents the passing of the beloved into eternal life. The Catholic Church has many traditions concerning funerals and funeral preparation. Please call the parish office or have the Funeral Home contact the office for information on having a Funeral Mass and/or internment at All Souls Cemetery. 30

ALL SOULS CATHOLIC CEMETERY Manager: M ary V alente Phone: 407.322.3795 E-mail: [email protected] Our faith in the Resurrection of Christ does not prevent physical death. We need to live well and give consideration to the manner and location of burial. All Souls Catholic Cemetery is located on the south side of State Highway 46A (25th Street) east of Hardy Avenue (about #3000 west). The risk taken by Joseph of Arimathea to claim the body of Jesus after his death on the cross shows the respect Christians have for the human body. God not only created us in the fullness of our humanity, but also sent his Son to take on our body and our nature. Being in the image and likeness of God makes our bodies innately honorable. Look as well at the elaborate efforts, again risking arrest and death, of the Christians living in persecuting Rome. They worshipped underground and buried their dead in catacombs. At this time All Souls Catholic Cemetery offers two burial options: burial of bodily remains and cremated remains. In the future we will also offer niches in a columbarium for cremated remains. While respecting your preferences — personal, familial, emotional, financial and spiritual — we will guide you with full, unhurried, in-depth disclosure so you can make prudent and informed choices. Regardless of the burial option chosen, it is important to understand that All

31

Souls Catholic Cemetery is not selling real estate. Actually, a purchaser is acquiring

space,

assuming complete control over all immediate and future burial decisions. The space is continuously owned and maintained by All Souls Parish and the Diocese of Orlando, who provide firm, long-term stability. Contracts, supporting paperwork and policy establish ownership and control of these rights, even through changing generations of family. Please visit our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org for more information on All Souls Catholic Cemetery.

OFFERTORY COLLECTIONS Christ's Teachings on Giving God has asked His people to give back "the first fruits" of their labors in gratitude for His great mercy, love and generosity. Jesus Himself echoed this command as He taught His followers to "seek first the kingdom of God;" almost half of His parables refer to stewardship of our time, talent and treasure. How Christians have interpreted "first fruits" over the years has been different, but the message is clear: all we have is a gift from God, and we are asked to return a portion of our gifts in thanksgiving. Today, let us begin an examination of our personal blessings. Since 1887, All Souls Catholic Church has served the spiritual and community needs of our diverse parish family. We can be proud of the All Souls legacy that each us benefits from today. We are committed to carry on that legacy for you, our children and the generations to follow. That means we need to ensure that our commitment to faith formation and our physical buildings remain vibrant and strong. 32

Just like your family, the spiritual needs of our parish are constantly growing and changing. And just like your family home, the parish buildings constructed, some decades ago, are in constant need of repairs and upgrades. Although we are exceedingly careful and cautious with our budget, we do have trouble keeping up the rising costs of our spiritual and physical building expenses - just as many families do. We are so very grateful for all your generosity though the years and take every measure to ensure we responsibly use your gifts to us to the benefit of all.

How is Your Offertory Donation Used at All Souls? For years, your generosity has as funded our: 

Liturgies & Ministries

Staff Salaries & Benefits

Utilities, Upkeep & Maintenance for all our buildings

Insurance & Education Obligations

You also sponsor youth activities, allow us to host parish missions/retreats, provide for those in need, promote social justice programs, and countless other projects in our faith community. All Souls receives no financial support for its operating expenses, the services it provides or the maintenance of its facilities outside of the contributions of its parishioners and friends. Clearly, this means All Souls depends on the financial support of you—our parishioners, benefactors and friends! All Souls Catholic Church began an Offertory Enhancement Initiative Program in 2012 to assist the parish in sustaining a dependable source of revenue throughout the year so that we may wisely budget to meet our operating 33

expenses. Each year parishioners receive a mailing from the pastor asking them to prayerfully reflect upon their current offertory contribution and to consider how they might increase their level of support and to commit themselves to a consistent monetary contribution—either weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. To assist the parishioners, we provide two methods of remitting these regular contributions to the parish: The two main methods are the Weekly Envelope system and the Online WeShare Program Weekly Offertory Envelope System— One of the benefits of being enrolled in the Weekly Offertory Envelope System, as opposed to making loose cash contributions to the collection basket, is that your contributions are recorded each week which enables us to send you a tax receipt at the end of the year. To enroll in the All Souls Weekly Offertory Envelope system please contact the parish office. Offertory envelopes will be mailed directly to your home each month. If you are a part-time resident you can call the parish office to have your envelopes stopped or re-started upon your return to town; or we may forward them to another residence. WeShare, is an easy and convenient way to save time and support our parish. Donating is simple, safe, and completely secure. With WeShare, you can set up recurring weekly or monthly transactions using your checking, savings, or credit card account using your computer, iPad, Tablet or Smartphone. You can decide how much to give to any collection, make payments for religious education classes, weddings and a host of other categories. You can even make those changes at any time, day or night. While not required, many members wish to print a donation slip to place in the offertory basket during services. Enter a name and choose a design in order to 34

download a PDF of a personalized donation slip that you can print. Plus, you can leave your checkbook at home on Sundays! If you would like to enroll in W eShare Online Giving, please visit our parish website: https://allsoulssanford.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities For those parishioners switching from Weekly Offertory Envelopes to the online W eShare program, please call the parish office so we may make a note of your donation option and cease the mailing of Offertory Envelopes. If you have any questions or concerns about the program or would like help setting up your account, please call our parish office at 407.322.3795.

DEBT REDUCTION COLLECTION, FORMERLY CALLED THIRD CENTURY Since the solemn dedication of our new sanctuary in May 2008, we have enjoyed celebrating our faith in a magnificent house

of

worship.

We

sincerely

appreciate the time, talents and treasures of the many people who have contributed to

building

our

parish

community

throughout the years. Our generous parishioners, who have always displayed a strong heritage of accomplishment,

and

pledged

their

financial support with our most recent capital campaign – called Third Century – during the construction of our sanctuary. In 2014, Bishop John Noonan most generously reduced our loan balance by more than six million dollars to $2,035,000 and restructured our loan.

35

We ask that you become part of this important effort and please prayerfully consider making a financial pledge to the debt reduction collection. We thank those many parishioners who have continued their pledge contributions. To all, we thank you, in advance, for your unending charitable commitment to All Souls.

OTHER WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE TO ALL SOULS: GIFT ANNUITIES, BEQUESTS, LIFE INSURANCE, STOCKS, TRUSTS AND PARISH ENDOWMENT FUND To leave a legacy is to reveal our hearts, for our legacy is a final testament of who we are, what we value, and whom we love. Regardless of your age, circumstances, or economic status, we encourage you to begin thinking about the legacy you wish to leave behind and the message you hope to share with your loved ones, your community, and your Church. Your first and foremost concern should be for your own needs and the needs of your loved ones. Once you have provided for your family, we hope you will remember the many needs of our parish and our larger diocesan family, including our seminarians, retired priests, and Catholic school students. You do not need to be wealthy to make a gift that makes a difference. A gift to our parish is truly a gift to our Lord and a wonderful way to express your gratitude for His abundance blessings and merciful grace. The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Orlando offers a wide variety of giving opportunities to provide long-term, sustainable support for our parish, school and ministries.
