I am the Number One Seamless Cored Wire Engineered by the Leading Welding Consumables Developers
th
I am the dependable force in cored wire welding. I weld the ships, trucks and trains that roam seas and continents. I connect the rigs, pipelines and wind turbines that supply the world’s energy. I make robots weld relentlessly. I make welders proud. My impenetrable seamless mantle keeps any moisture out of my core and shields your weld from hydrogen cracking. My mantle is stiff and my surface copper-coated for smooth and stable feeding. My core is packed with decades of know-how and engineered to bring you productivity, weld quality and – above all – more profit. I am the world’s number one seamless cored wire – from voestalpine Böhler Welding.

Welcome to Helsinki FINLAND
Finland is a safe and smoothly functioning, reliable destination, easily accessible from all over the world. Its geographical location between East and West makes it interesting as a conference venue, attracting delegates from all over the world.
Insurance
High educational standards have contributed to Finland’s emergence as a country of high technology. Finland is well known for its mobile phones and boasts more Internet connections per capita than any other country. Finland is today a world leader in various high-tech fields, and this expertise benefits society as a whole. Finnish culture is often summarised as “sauna, sisu and Sibelius”.
Internet Café and Wireless Internet access
The Finnish language itself acts as a boundary of sorts between East and West. Finnish belongs to neither the Western Romance languages nor to the Eastern Slavic languages but is based on its own Fenno-Ugric heritage. Naturally, the cultural influences of both East and West have left their mark on our language in the form of numerous loan words, but despite the force of foreign trends and rulers the Finnish language remains very different.
The Organising Committee will take no liability for personal injuries sustained by, or for loss or damage to property belonging to conference participants, either during or as a result of the conference. All participants are recommended to have travel insurance to cover non-attendance due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances. A free Internet Café is available at the Exhibition Area in hotel Crowne Plaza. Both venue hotels, Crowne Plaza and Scandic Park, have free Wireless Internet Access in the lobby area. In Crowne Plaza, choose royalmeeting, password is rr-crowne. In Scandic Park, choose scandic_easy, user name is your own name and password your phone number.
Language The official language of the 68th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference is English. Local transportation
Each registered participant has a free HSL public transportation ticket for 28 June – 3 July, 2015 in the Registration Envelope. This ticket is valid on Helsinki, Vantaa and Espoo trams, buses, local trains, metro and on the ferry to Suomenlinna (not, however, on the Finnair City Bus). If you need a taxi, you can order one through the Helsinki Taxi Centre. The phone number is +358 (0) 100 0700. Transportation by bus from hotel Crowne Plaza to the Finnish Evening and back is provided by the organisers.
Finnish sauna culture can be experienced anywhere from public saunas to swimming halls. This escapist tradition so beloved by hardy Finns involves socialising, relaxing and usually swimming, either in the sea, a lake or a swimming pool.
HELSINKI
Throughout its 450-year history, the maritime city of Helsinki has swung between the currents of Eastern and Western influences. The lifestyle in the second most northern capital in the world is full of contrasts and fascinating culture and traditions. Influences from both the East and West are visible in the city’s architecture, cuisene, events, traditions and many other elements that are unique to the way of life in Helsinki. Helsinki’s architecture is typified by Nordic minimalism and refinement, yet at the same time the styles of different periods can be clearly seen. The contrasts between Eastern and Western influences are most noticeable in the city’s two main cathedrals. The unostentatious Lutheran Helsinki Cathedral and the Byzantine redbrick Uspenski Cathedral with its golden cupolas compete for attention within a stone’s throw of each other. Eastern and Western influences can also be tasted in Helsinki’s cuisine.
Parking
Parking space is available at hotels Crowne Plaza and Scandic Park as well as at Finlandia Hall. No parking space can be reserved in advance.
Smoking Time Tipping
Smoking is prohibited at all venues
Time zone in Finland: GMT + 2 hrs All restaurant prices and taxi fares include service, but good service in the restaurant can be rewarded with a tip. Tipping is at the guest’s discretion in hotels.
Helsinki is one of the safest cities in Europe and friendly towards residents and visitors alike thanks to its cleanliness and functional urban planning. Food hygiene and the quality of drinking water are of the highest order and are matched by the city’s other essential services. Helsinki’s experience and expertise in hosting major events is world-class. Both Helsinki and its residents have a personality and charm that are easy to get to know. The people are open and uncomplicated, regardless of whether they are serving customers or enjoying their time off. The city is open to new winds and trends, as demonstrated by the trendy and laid-back atmosphere. Studies have shown that visitors truly appreciate Helsinki’s unique and multilingual residents.
GENERAL INFORMATION Climate The average day-time temperature in Finland in June-July is around 17-25°C (63-77°F). Evenings may be
cooler. Fairly warm weather with occasional rain showers is likely. So you might benefit from packing both lighter and warmer clothes and an umbrella!
Coffee Breaks and Lunch
Coffee will be served during coffee breaks at 10:00-10:30 and 16:00-16:30 at hotels Crowne Plaza and Scandic Park. For those participants who have pre-booked lunches at the IIW 2015 buffet at hotel Crowne Plaza, lunch tickets have been packed in the Registration Envelope. The buffet is located in the 2nd floor of hotel Crowne Plaza (see floor plan at page 9) and open daily from Sunday to Friday from 12:00 to 14:30. A limited number of additional lunch tickets may be purchased from the buffet restaurant as well as a selection of snacks and drinks. Restaurant Famu at hotel Scandic Park will serve à la carte lunch on Monday and Tuesday and a lunch buffet on Wednesday at 12:30-14:30. On Sunday, Thursday and Friday restaurant Famu will be closed. You can also ask from the Registration Desk at hotel Crowne Plaza or from the IIW Information Desk at Scandic Park for a list of restaurants serving lunch within a short walking distance from the meeting venues.
Currency
The official currency in Finland is the euro (€). Most major credit cards are accepted in hotels and shops. VISA, MasterCard and Eurocard are accepted at the IIW 2015 registration desk. Personal or company cheques will not be accepted at the registration desk or shops. Traveller’s cheques can be cashed at banks and exchange bureaus.

IIW 2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMME HIGH STRENGTH STEELS - CHALLENGES AND APPLICATIONS
IIW International conference on High Strength Materials – Challenges and Applications Design decisions for fabricated structures are rarely made based solely on technical grounds. Safety requirements, cost restrictions, structural performance demands, and increasingly, environmental pressures all contribute to the decision-making process. The importance of raw materials and energy efficiency is constantly growing. This has motivated many industries to perform total lifecycle cost assessment and environmental footprint computations, both of which now integrally influence design and purchasing decisions. Advanced design solutions incorporating high strength steels, stainless steels, aluminium and other advanced materials provide considerable potential for raw materials and energy savings, improved performance and lower costs. To help address these challenges, and to provide a global forum for the exchange of new technical and scientific results, the Welding Society of Finland will host the IIW International Conference on High Strength Materials – Challenges and Applications. This prestigious event will be held in Helsinki on 2-3 July 2015 in conjunction with the 68th IIW Annual Assembly. The conference will have sessions focusing on challenges and solutions covering all aspects of joining, processing and design performance of high strength materials. Special attention will be devoted to highlighting successful applications of high strength materials in industrial and commercial products. The conference will be opened with the distinguished Portevin Lecture delivered by eminent scientist Prof. David Porter from Oulu University on the theme “High strength steels: Challenges and applications”. Prof Porter has more than 30 years of experience developing new and novel high strength steel grades for applications in welded structures. International keynote speakers representing key scientific and technology sectors will be included in the programme. More than 100 high quality papers from 26 countries have been selected based on an international peer review process. Industrial sectors of interest include Shipbuilding, Transportation, Energy, Pressure and Process Equipment and Aerospace. Technology-based topics will include: • Solid state welding • Innovative joining methods for high strength materials • Welding physics • Arc and power beam processes • Materials performance after joining • Fatigue and fracture • Design and fabrication Chairman of the IIW International Conference Committee: Prof. Gary Marquis, Aalto University, School of Engineering.

PORVOO OLD TOWN AND ART FACTORY
In 1747, a fortress was built as the main base for the Swedish armed forces stationed in Finland. A group of islands close to Helsinki were chosen to be the site of the fortress, which was to be called Sveaborg, “the fortress of Sweden”. Soon after Finland gained independence (from Russia) in 1917 the Swedish name of the fortress was officially changed to the Finnish Suomenlinna, “castle of Finland”. In 1991, Suomenlinna was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Suomenlinna Museum including the Suomenlinna Experience multi-visual show. The Suomenlinna Museum, which is in the main Visitor Centre, gives visitors a glimpse of the life of officers and soldiers during the periods of Swedish and Russian rule in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are also pictures of the period since Finnish independence, when there was a prison for communist detainees on Suomenlinna, a Finnish garrison, a submarine base and a Valmet shipyard, which manufactured ships for the Soviet Union. The entrance fee also includes admission to the prize-winning Suomenlinna Experience, a half-hour widescreen show covering the construction of the maritime fortress, the sea battles for the fortification and life and sounds in the garrison town. Using the headphones provided you can choose to listen in Finnish, Swedish, English, German, French, Russian and Japanese. Return to Helsinki Harbour by ferry, and then coach transfer back to Crowne Plaza. Sightseeing Tours AINOLA, VILLA KOKKONEN AND KRAPIHOVI Sibelius and Aalto, music and architecture combined Tuesday, 30 June at 12:00-16:00 Departure from Crowne Plaza hotel with coach and guide. This cultural and architectural tour takes you to the Lake Tuusula area, a 45 minute drive from Helsinki, where a large number of Finnish artists settled at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Lunch will be served at Restaurant Krapihovi, an idyllic wooden villa where Finnish food tradition is both cherished and created. The pearl grey main building with its green touches was built in 1883 by the Councillor of State Sourander for his summer residence and for the main building of the Krapi estate. The handsome villa-style building amid the old park is a fine specimen of the wooden architecture of its time. The old building’s chambers and halls in two stories have a special atmosphere. You will then visit Ainola, the home and now a home museum of the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. This timber-built villa was designed by Finnish architect Lars Sonck. Its distance from the hustle and bustle of the nation’s capital gave the composer the peace that he needed for his creative endeavours, while other artistic families living in the neighbourhood provided a lively social circle. Ainola has been preserved as it was during Sibelius’ time. After the visit at Ainola, continue to a private classical concert at Villa Kokkonen, former home of composer Johannes Kokkonen designed by Alvar Aalto. The tour ends at Crowne Plaza.

The tour departs from Crowne Plaza and after an approximately 30 min transfer by coach and guide you arrive to Nuuksio and visit first the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia. Haltia is a new type of visitor centre, bringing all of Finland’s nature under one roof and closer to the visitor through both the building’s facilities and its stunning exhibitions. Nature from all over Finland can be experienced in the Helsinki region! The Haltia building was designed by the architect Rainer Mahlamäki, who was inspired by the tales of Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. The design enables man and nature to come together peacefully and harmoniously. The centre signals a new era in wood building, for it is the first public building in Finland built entirely of wood. The environment has been taken into account in Haltia’s facilities and activities alike through skilful design and the latest ecological solutions. The building is heated and cooled with energy derived from the sun and the earth. After a guided tour of Haltia you will meet your wilderness guides and start a hiking tour along well maintained trekking paths in the national park. The guides will tell you about Finnish nature and animals during the tour which ends at a small reindeer camp in the middle of the forest. You will see the reindeers at close range, you will hear stories about them and you can feed them. You can also take photographs and try out “suopunki” lasso throwing onto a wooden reindeer’s horns (suopunki throwing is the traditional way to catch reindeers in Lapland fells). Enjoy lunch in the atmospheric wilderness style of tepee restaurant “White Reindeer”, furnished with rustic wooden tables and benches and reindeer skins. Open fire burning in the middle of the tepee adds to the cosy atmosphere. Transfer back to Crowne Plaza.
