Open to all levels of experience, ages 7-13, this week of dance camp will be a super fun mix of Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop! We'll explore each of these styles as well as some improvisation and choreography to create a work of your own. Please bring a favorite piece of music to work on a solo or small group dance. Feel free to wear anything stretchy that you feel comfortable moving in (leotards & tights, or a t-shirt & shorts/leggings), and make sure you wear dance shoes (either Ballet or Jazz are fine). Please also make sure you have a basic black leotard and leggings which we'll dress up for an informal studio show on Friday at 11:00. Invite your family & friends to come see what we've been working on all week! Instructor: Melissa Nein While earning her BA in Theater/Dance at Trinity College, Melissa Nein also completed a senior semester study program in New York City at La MaMa E.T.C. (experimental theatre club) as well as an internship at Dance Theater Workshop. She has been teaching Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, and Choreography at the Boothbay Region YMCA since 1996, and has also run dance programs at the Kents Hill school and Lincoln Academy. Before becoming the mother of three beautiful daughters, she enjoyed performing in many musical productions at Lincoln County Community Theater, including Damn Yankees and Anything Goes to name a few. For the past two summers she has had the privilege of being hired to set choreography on the performers at the Carousel Music Theater. She is a long time member of the Maine Dance Teachers' Club and loves participating in their monthly teacher workshops to continue working on technique and learning about new styles and new trends in the field of dance!

Hip Hop Camp is a crash course into the moves and style of hip hop for ages 712. In Hip Hop Camp we will put a major focus on body isolations and noticing the different ways, within rhythm, we can accent and bring style to music with dance moves. We will start the week with learning what our body already knows about movement in a style similar to Authentic Movement, and build to listening to music not only with our ears, but with our bodies. Each day will consist of a warm up, technique practice, and learning choreography. The week will culminate with a hip hop dance number to showcase all that has been learned and practiced. Throughout the week creativity and self expression will be encouraged and celebrated, while simultaneously learning to balance the discipline of being in a dance class. Hip Hop Camp will be a five day journey for kiddos to not only learn a different style of movement rooted in a different, diverse culture; but also to gain the confidence and means to express themselves through a new avenue! Instructor: Ashlea Andrews A dancer in heart and soul, dance has been a part of Ashlea's life since she was 3 years old. With the majority of lessons having been through the YMCA's late Curry School of Dance, Ashlea started with the basic ballet and tap, and later ventured into jazz, modern and hip hop. Dance always served, not only as a healthy outlet in life, but an identity to hold tight to while growing up. Dancing through elementary and middle school all the way to high school graduation, dance continued to be a part of her life when she attended college at the University of Maine at Farmington. Studying Rehabilitation Services with a concentration in Addiction Rehabilitation, and taking modern dance and Bodywork courses, Ashlea was also part of the UMF Dance Team, acting as a co-captain her sophomore year. Ashlea moved to Philadelphia, were she took hip hop and modern dance classes with the Koresh Dance Company, while working in a job that provided support to kids with severe mental and behavioral disturbances. After two years in the city, Ashlea could no longer resist the call of the Maine coast and moved back to Boothbay Harbor, where she was fortunate to gain employment through B.R.E.S. and work in the third and fourth grade wing. Having been back in this wonderful community for three years now, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to not only incorporate dance back into her life, but to help integrate it into the lives of kiddos whose shoes she was once in!
