It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 15th International Symposium on Metallography METALLOGRAPHY ’013, to be held from 24-26 April 2013 in the beautiful surroundings of the High Tatra Mountains in the Slovak Republic. We welcome all participants to this traditional event where materials specialists from various parts of the world have been meeting and exchanging their latest insights at three-yearly intervals since 1969. The original group of narrowly-specialized metallographers who based their research on light microscopical and macroscopical observation has grown in line with the development of instrument technology into a community of materials specialists making use of a wide range of increasingly modern equipment, even though the subject of their research still remains material, and most frequently metal. At the turn of the 19th-20th century metallography was just beginning to show its usefulness. At that time there were no insights into the relation between microstructure (let alone substructure) and the characteristics of specific alloys, but the promoters of the new science such as Messrs. Stein, Heyn and Austen could sense its huge potential. The development during the 20th century of further techniques beyond light microscopy for the investigation of metal materials and the introduction of new types of materials and technologies means that the capabilities of such microscopes have long been exceeded. Nevertheless, they still remain an indispensable research tool for today’s materials specialists, particularly since their use has been extended to cover the immensely wide spectrum of new materials, as we can see in the range of contributions proposed for this conference. A big vote of thanks must go to our principal sponsor, U. S. Steel Košice, s.r.o. The Conference Committee also wishes to acknowledge the assistance and encouragement that we have received from many other individuals and organizations in the preparation of this event. The Scientific and Organizing Committee wish to create a successful conference in order to spread professional experience in the wider international community of metallographers and materials scientists and exhibitors. We strongly believe that through this conference you will acquire many new insights and inspirations for your research. May the former continue to flourish, furthering the development of new materials, and may the latter continue to be a place for meetings and making new contacts for mutual cooperation, in the sincere spirit which has always been traditional for this event. We warmly welcome you and wish all of you fruitful inspiring discussions and an enjoyable stay in the High Tatra Mountains during the 15th International Conference on Metallography.
