General information The International Lupin Association is pleased to announce the 10th International Lupin Conference to be held on June 19 – 24, 2002 at Hotel Edda, Laugarvatn, Iceland. The meeting will include invited speakers, contributed papers, posters and field tours through agricultural and scenic areas of southern Iceland. The meeting is open to all people interested in the biology and utilization of plants in the genus Lupinus. The International Lupin Association was founded in 1980 when the first conference was held in Peru. Subsequent conferences have been held in Spain, France, Australia, Poland, Chile, Portugal, the U.S.A. and Germany. This time lupin people will meet in Iceland, where the perennial Nootka lupin has been domesticated and is used extensively in land reclamation. Over 150 contributions registered for the conference indicate that the meeting will be another important thread in the history of lupin research and the ILA.

Conference Venue The conference will be held at Laugarvatn in the south of Iceland, 95 km from Reykjavik. Laugarvatn is a rural village and takes its name from the adjacent lake. The village is a school resort in winter and a popular tourist resort in summer. The conference hotel is Hotel Edda ML Laugarvatn. (www.hoteledda.is). There is an outdoor swimming pool in the village and a natural steam bath built over a geothermal spring. Less than half an hour´s drive from Laugarvatn are two of Iceland´s main tourist attractions, the majestic Gullfoss waterfall and the world famous Geysir geothermal area. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a cool temperate maritime climate, rather cool in summer and fairly mild in winter. In late June you can expect an average day temperature of 10°-15°C. Good hiking boots and waterproof clothing are recommended and do not forget to bring your swimsuit as swimming facilities are excellent. During the summer the nights are bright in Iceland and in late June the sun hardly goes down. Iceland follows the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) throughout the year.
