WEEKLY BULLETIN – 10TH-14TH OCTOBER 2016

Dear Parents, Further to my email this week, on Monday 7th November, the School will be having its photo taken as a whole group photograph. Gillman & Soame, a leading schools’ photographic company, working with 80% of the UK’s independent schools and universities, has already taken similar photos at OBS in 2006 and 2011 and also at many of the other International schools in Portugal and other European countries. Examples of whole school photos can be viewed on the company's website, https://www.gillmanandsoame.co.uk/schools/gallery/ and outside the Headmaster's office. We are confident you and your children will wish to have a copy for yourselves as a permanent memory of your child’s time at OBS. The cost of each photograph with colour title and crest, which is 90cm by 23cm and comes in a presentation tube, is €35. You will receive your photograph before the end of the Autumn Term and the €35 will be added to your bill. If you do not wish to have one, please email [email protected] to indicate this by Friday, 21st October. Please note this will not be an annual event. There will not be another whole school photograph for at least 4/5 years. WHOLE SCHOOL NOTICES If you have any siblings who are eligible to enter Prep in September 2017, please contact [email protected] to begin their admission process. This is particularly important to allow us to plan the Primary Admissions week in November. PRIMARY NOTICES Dear Parents, Yesterday, all Primary pupils took part in “Empty Classroom Day”. This event was designed to offer pupils the opportunity to learn outside the confines of their regular classroom. I spent most of the day with Form 1 at Serralves. We had a wonderful day learning about leaves, seeds and different types of trees and plants… I also can’t forget about making fairy wands and elf houses! Next week we will all be taking part in “World Maths Day” activities. During this day class teachers will be preparing Maths based activities to allow children to see Mathematics in the everyday world – not just in a text book. We had our first Parent – Teacher Association meeting of the year this week and we continue to be extremely grateful for the PTA (of which all parents are members) for their support - both financially and with their time and expertise. We have already made some provisional plans for PTA sponsored activities throughout this term. If you wish to be more actively involved then please do plan to be at the annual PTA general meeting at 9am on Monday, 24th August. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend. Mark Evans, Head of Primary PRIMARY PASTORAL WEEKLY REPORT For the week ending 30th September the house point totals were: Windsor 1340, Lancaster 1075 and Bragança 1161. In other Pastoral news, the entire Primary Section celebrated Outdoor Learning Day on Thursday 6th of October. Prep-Form 3 had a day out in the garden of Serralves and Forms 4 and 5 had a more challenging hike at the ecological corridor in Valongo. This initiative is designed to encourage greater confidence and independence through new experiences and controlled risk taking. Jonathan Bridges, Primary Pastoral Coordinator EYFS Parents Forum This meeting has now been re-scheduled for Monday 10th October. SECONDARY NOTICES Dear Parents, Form 9 were lucky enough to receive a Careers talk from guest speaker and Teacher António Neto. As our first term gets underway, the OBS careers program (organized by Mariam Gander) begins. Our first guest speaker was Professor António Neto, a highly qualified Economist and university lecturer. He graciously gave us an interesting insight into the world of education and the fantastic opportunities that can be expected. A thoroughly enjoyable talk that was greatly appreciated.

SRT University fair Senior students also had the chance to visit the SRT University fair and find out a little more about possible locations to study after IB. Looking ahead Friday - COBIS Student Leadership Conference 4 students from Form 12 (Hemang, Madalena, Rita and Diogo) will be attending the COBIS Student Leadership conference in Madrid this weekend. We are sure they will represent the School very well and we hope that they will benefit from the Conference topics as well as meeting other students and speakers. The art department is planning an Art Trip for those that study Art in F9, 11 & 12 on Tuesday 11th October departing at 13:45. There have been some concerns re homework, but the schedules are now complete and students from F6 to F10 should be receiving 3 homeworks of about 40 minutes each between Monday to Thursday with additional homeworks being set on Friday. If for whatever reason your child receives something completely different to this, then please alert the Tutor. Parents should know that the school provides extra help outside lesson time with workshops and one to one sessions that will help motivated students reach their full potential. Private Tutoring is not normally required and should only be given once it has been identified and approved by the Learning Support Department. I would like to remind parents that there are still spaces in the many clubs that are on offer in School, both at lunchtime and after school. We hope more students will join in and benefit from these. Robert Hewett, Head of Secondary http://secondaryobserver.weebly.com

7O English – The Tempest Form 7O have been honing their dramatic skills by acting out key scenes from The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Last Friday, they performed reduced versions of Act 2 in groups. This has helped the students understand the plot, characters and themes of the play before starting a detailed reading of the script this week.
