Pro-D-Day – Sept. 26th Open House Sept. 28th Parent Barbecue Sept. 28th Terry Fox Run Sept. 30th

Last week, the students had an opportunity to get to know each other and the different grade group teachers and yesterday was their first official day with their classes. WE Kinvig is a wonderful learning community. We take great pride in knowing that the parents, students and staff work hard together to make this the best environment to grow academically, socially and emotionally. With your support, we have been able to provide many opportunities for students to reach their full potential. We look forward to this continued support so that we can make this school year productive and rewarding for all. Jas Atwal Principal

Class Organization Suggestions for helping your child make the transition to a new class: Teachers work very hard to establish the best classroom scenarios. We really do wish to have teachable groupings and happy children. When setting classes, teachers look at a variety of factors such as administrative feedback, support staff feedback and written educational insights shared by parents. About six to eight factors are considered in addition to feedback. We make every effort to establish the best possible classroom environment for each student. Children can sometimes come home upset when they have been separated from a friend, or they were assigned to a teacher who they had not anticipated. While they will need to be comforted at this time, please do not request a transfer on these grounds. Once classes are established, it is extremely difficult to move children without changing the dynamics of the room. We encourage parents to: 1.) Talk to your child about their personal strengths and weakness. Chat about how they will be able to use those strengths in this new situation. Let them feel they have the power to make this new classroom a positive place for them to learn and grow. 2.) Focus on positives. It is all too easy to focus on the

negative. It seems to be a human characteristic. Encourage your child to find one good thing that happened in class that day. The next day look for two good things that happened. Write them down and watch them grow over time. Enthusiasm will build. Don’t focus only on one area, encourage your child to think about positives in their learning, in their recess and lunch, and in their interactions with classmates. 3.) Discuss the opportunities to make new friends. You could invite, over for a play day, some of your child’s new classmates. Help your child see that it is possible to “Make new friends and keep the old ones, that one is silver and the other gold.” 4.) Talk about ways they can maintain the friendships that they made last year. Suggest they arrange meeting spots on the school grounds at recess and lunch, so that friends in another class can connect. 5.) Encourage your child to share their concerns with their new teacher. If enough students share their concern, then the problem and its solution can become a classroom project. And, again, the resolution comes from parents, teachers and students working to make the learning environment a positive one. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to discuss important information that will help the teacher best support your child.

Bell Schedule Changes SCHOOL HOURS

Our Parent Night / Open House is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 2:45 pm – 5 pm. This is an opportunity to come by and visit your child’s classroom and meet the teacher. The PAC Barbecue will take place during this time as well. We welcome you to both events.

Pick-up / Drop Off / Traffic and Safety During pick up and drop off times, we worry about the student safety. Please do not drive in and park in the staff parking lot. Please remember that we have many students crossing the entrance and walking in or near the drop off zone. Please drive slow to help keep our students safe. Thanks for your help and attention to these rules. Together we can continue to make it safe for the children and convenient for a quick pick-up.

Important Forms Coming Home this Month: Three very important forms will be coming home that will need your immediate attention. There will be: 1.) a media consent form, 2.) a home for lunch permission form 3.) a Student Information Verification Form All three forms will need to be reviewed, updated and returned to school. It is VERY important that all three forms are returned promptly. Thank you in advance for “keeping an eye out” for these forms and for returning them back to the school as soon as possible.

Extra Clothing Prepare for the wet weather! You may want to send an extra set of clothes for your primary children. We tend to have students that slip and are in need of a change of clothes. This will avoid a call home or at work.

Planners This year your child’s planner has several school pages included that cover information about WE Kinvig as well as the Bell Schedule. In addition, there are eight pages included by the district which provides contact information, resources, and important district information. The cost of the school planner is $5.00. Please put your child’s contact information in the planner for emergency purposes. Planner are available for purchase at the Office.

Recycling Program The School District is going into a full phase of recycling. We have always recycled plastics and paper but now all Surrey schools will phase in organics recycling. We will train our students to sort their garbage, and recycling products they bring in their lunch and train them to recycle as much waste as possible. Our goal is to minimize the amount of garbage that is going into our landfills. You may see wrappers and non-organic waste being sent home at the end of the day. More information will come to you from the school regarding this program.

School Closures… Sometimes extreme weather conditions or other circumstances can cause class cancellations at a school, or district wide on short notice. In the event of class cancellations, the Surrey School District will post information on its website at www.surreyschools.ca and provide updates to the following radio stations: CKNW (980 AM) News 1130 (1130 AM) CBC Radio (690 AM) Red-FM (93.1 FM)

Radio India (1600 AM) Radio Punjab (cable/satellite) Fairchild Radio (1470 AM) CHMB (AM 1320)

Sometimes the decision to send students home if they have care can come to us close to the entry bell. We will always keep all students who are without parents and contact you by phone for safe pick up. All students should check in to the office and should never return home on their own without contact made by the school staff. Please discuss this safety protocol with your children. The District will do its best to communicate the status of schools by 7:00 am. Please see our school website for more information.

Sick Students

Terry Fox Run

When to Keep Your Sick Child Home For the protection of your child, as well as other children, keep your child home if he/she: -has a fever -is too sick to take part in all normal school activities -has a suspected or known communicable disease (ie. strep throat, pink eye, chicken pox, or any other undiagnosed rash). Keep them home until they are no longer infectious. Please let the school know your child’s symptoms. For further information call your local health unit.

Students and staff are on the run to help raise awareness about cancer! The Terry Fox Run will take place on Friday, September 30 at 1:15 pm. We encourage parents to come out and join the run or help to volunteer. We will fundraise by collecting money and coin donations for Terry on September 30 as well as sending out pledge forms. You may also go online and make a pledge at www.terryfox.org. Thank you again for your support. All cheques should be made out to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Lates and Absences Please call and let us know if your child will be late or absent. We call you if you have not called in so we can ensure the safety of your child. If we are not available to pick up the phone, please leave a message on the answering machine. This would help us at the office immensely. (604-594-1135)

Safe Pick Up and Drop Off and Student Safety We always strive to create a safe learning environment for your children. As a result, we ask all visitors to check in at the office before entering the hallways or going to a class. Parents should drop off and pick up children at the exterior doors. In case of emergency, we want to make sure we account for all individuals. If you are picking up your child early from the end of the day, please sign them out at the office so we can make sure they are safe. Cutting through the hallways to make it from the front to the back is strongly discouraged.
