Andrea Paris-Gutierrez

President and Artistic director of the Los Angeles Ballet Academy Andrea started dancing at the age of 5 at Bernice McGough’s (her mother) Ballet School Auckland, New Zealand. She passed all her Grade and Major examinations under the British Ballet Method with Honours and holds the Solo Dancer’s Diploma. Andrea was awarded the Paul Hammond Scholarship and a Full Scholarship to the National Ballet School where she studied before joining the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Andrea moved to Los Angeles in 1979 where she trained under Dolores Terry, Robert Rossoulatt and Stanley Holden. She then travelled to and performed in Japan, Europe and Mexico. Andrea toured the US and Canada with the National Touring Company of Sugar Babies as well as performed in the Los Angeles productions of Sugar Babies, Song of Norway, Anyone Can Whistle, Anything Goes, My Fair Lady, Pyjama Game and more. She choreographed, assisted and performed with Opera Pacific at the Orange County Performing Arts Centre and the Los Angeles Opera. Her choreography has been seen on music view, soap operas, industrials and ballet companies. Andrea’s television and film credits include General Hospital, the Academy Awards and the films Beaches and Pennies from Heaven. She was the assistant choreographer on the TV series Rags to Riches which produced 2-3 musical numbers per episode. She coached Fred Savage on the Wonder Years, Rita Moreno on a TV movie for PBS, and Tony Geary on General Hospital. Some of her more interesting jobs included, sitting in a bathtub of bubbles doing high kicks for a Japanese beer commercial being a Dancing ‘Star’ on The Academy Awards, choreographing an award winning video for the rock/punk band Jane’s Addiction’ and being a tap dancing truck in a Truck Rental commercial! In 1992 Andrea started her own school and holds a Royal Academy of Dance Teacher’s Certificate. She has taught Master Classes, judged dance festivals in the US and in NZ and has travelled to NY and London to further her training as a dance educator. Andrea has been awarded Outstanding Choreographer at Company Dance and the Youth America Grand Prix Regional. She has been awarded Outstanding Teacher at the YAGP and LABA has been awarded outstanding school at YAGP multiple times. Andrea was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award from Dance Teacher Magazine. Miss Andrea lives in Lake Balboa with her husband Iker. Their son Dylan is a member of the Joffrey Ballet Company and their daughter Veronica is a free-lance dancer with MTA Agency. Andrea honours her home country and the training she received from her mother by offering a LABA Scholarship every year to a New Zealand Dancer at the Waitakere Performing Arts Festival Auckland.

Solo Variation from any recognised classical repertoire which MAY or MAY NOT be from the list in B1 The selection,

however, must show a clear contrast in style to the variation selected in section B.1. All performers will participate in a Technical Class conducted by, or for, the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be permitted. The Technical Class will be taken into consideration in determining both the semi final and the final placing.

C. There will be a semi final of up to twelve competitors who will repeat either B. 1 or B. 2 at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the Preliminary round(s) D. For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi final.

Society Nomination Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, which shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A, B1 and B2. The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include;

  

A demonstration of adequate preparation An authority of performance A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made. The nominating Society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee National Young Performer of the Year Award i.e. $75.00 inc gst

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS

2016 Criteria for Troupes/Groups A.

Competitors may be of any age. Competitors may only compete in ONE nominated Troupe/Group.

B.

Each Troupe/Group shall be nominated at a Member Society Competition by performing in any dance genre pertinent to the Competition they enter. This competition is for amateur troupes/groups only and is not open to professionals*. No singing allowed.

C.

There shall be a maximum time limit of five minutes, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D.

Troupes/Groups who gain nomination must be able to attend the National Young Performer Competition which will be held in Palmerston North. Compulsory Registration/Orientation will be on the evening of Thursday 13th and the Competition will be on Friday 14th October 2016.

E.

The winning Troupe/Group will be announced at the completion of Competition on the Friday and it would be appreciated if the group were available to perform at the Final Award Concert on Sunday night 16th October 2016.

F.

Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of both the competitors and suitable for a family audience.

NB. Troupe/Group members names and age, as well as the Entry Fee, will need to submitted on the Official Entry form, no later than 6th September 2016. Nominees in the Troupe/Group section are required to include performance copies of their music on CD when submitting their entry form, and a list of the titles and composer and/or artists for each piece. SOCIETY NOMINATION Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate ONE Troupe/Group**, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance at the Member Society Competition. The adjudicator will determine that the Troupe/Group has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Troupe/Group Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include: 

The winning Troupe/Group will receive a Trophy and $1,000 for their Studio. *Professional means any performer whose primary form of income is through dance performance and whose chosen career requires him/her to be recognized (classified) as a professional. The exception to this is a participating teacher who may perform. ** As some Societies split their dance genre’s and run large Competitions at different times of the year, they will be able to nominate more than one group to represent their Society.

COMPETITION RULES 1) AMATEUR STATUS: Competitions are for amateur competitors only and not open to professional dancers. “Professional” means any performer whose primary form of income is through dance performance or whose chosen career requires him or her to be recognised (classified) as a professional. With the exception of a participating teacher in an open team item who may perform. 2) CLASSES: Classes may be amalgamated or divided at the Committees discretion dependant on the number of entries. 3) ADJUDICATOR TAUGHT/COACHED: No competitor who has been taught or coached by the adjudicator during the 24 months prior to the competition (seminars exempted) shall be eligible to compete under that adjudicator. 4) ADJUDICATOR COMMUNICATION: Communication with the adjudicator(s) by competitors, teachers or any other interested parties prior to or during the competition is strictly prohibited. Committee reserve the right to disqualify any competitor who breaches this rule. Committee members and official helpers are permitted to speak to the adjudicator as part of their official duties. 5) ENTRY DETAILS: a) A separate entry form is required for each competition weekend. All details requested on the society’s official entry form must be completed, including item titles where applicable. b) Each individual dancer is required to complete a separate entry form for each competition weekend. Duos may be included on this form. c) Dance schools may enter troupes on the same form for each competition weekend. d) If paying by direct credit use competitor’s full name as reference & attach proof of payment with your entry form or your entry will be returned 6) ENTRY FEES (INCLUDING LATE ENTRIES): a) Please check entry fees carefully as overpayment less than $10.00 will be taken as a donation and will not be refunded. b) The executive committee reserves the right to accept late entries on receipt of a $20 late fee. c) Refunds for entries will only be given if the Society is notified of a withdrawal prior to the Festival closing date. 7) RESTRICTED CLASSES: a) Competitors entering a restricted class will have never won a first prize at any other competitions in that genre prior to the closing date of our competitions. b) Competitors entered in a Restricted Solo class are not eligible to enter in the Junior Jazz championship or Junior Ballet Award. 8) WPASA AWARDS: a) The Award will only be held if there are sufficient numbers of competitors entered. Entry fees will be refunded in full if the award does not take place. b) Previous winners are ineligible to compete the following year. 9) NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS NOMINEE ENTRANTS: a) Entry fees for the Nomination class will only be refunded if the Society is notified of a withdrawal prior to the Festival entry closing date. b) Withdrawal from the NYPA requires the recipient to refund the prize money.

10) ACCEPTANCE: a) The receipt of your entry binds you to accept the Competition Rules of this Society. b) The rules in effect on the day of competition will be held at the Administration Table. 11) PRIVACY ACT: In compliance with the Privacy Act of 1993, all information collected on a competitor will be used for the prime purpose of registering that competitor and determining their eligibility for the classes they have entered in our annual dance festival. Some information will be used for compilation of the programme. All other information will remain confidential to the Committee. 12) AGE OF COMPETITOR: a) Shall be determined as at first day of each respective competition weekend. b) Entrants in Duo, Trio or Troupe classes must dance in the age group of the oldest competitor. c) Competitors must be prepared to provide proof of age if requested by a committee member. 13) TIME LIMITS: a) Solo, Duo and Trio items b) Troupe Items 14) DANCE ORDER: discretion.

15) TROPHIES: All trophies remain the property of the Society and must be returned when requested cleaned and professionally engraved. 16) MULTIPLE CLASS AWARDS: Unless otherwise specified, all trophies, scholarships and awards are determined on the basis of the highest aggregate marks for the requisite classes. 17) REPORTS/PRIZE MONEY: a) Reports & Prize money may be collected after results are read. b) Scholarship monies will be paid directly to recipients. c) LABA travel sponsorship will be paid on confirmation of travel details. 18) PROTESTS: a) Classification protests shall be made in writing, prior to the commencement of the class concerned with $20.00 fee. b) A protest (other than 9A) shall be lodged in writing, with a $20.00 fee, to an Executive Committee member within one hour of the completion of the class in dispute. c) No person, except officials, shall approach the Adjudicator until the last event of the competition is completed. 19) PERSONAL RISK: All competitors compete at their own risk; the society will not be liable for any injury incurred by patrons. The officers of the Society and those persons seconded to assist will not accept responsibility for the supervision of children. 20) RECORDING: No video, DVD, film, camera or other visual recording device or apparatus shall be used during the competition without prior written application to the committee or if the committee’s approval is withdrawn or not granted. The committee reserves the right to make any decisions arising from any unauthorised recording of any type. 21) SPECIAL AWARDS: Special awards and prizes are made at the discretion of the adjudicator in consultation with the Executive Committee. These decisions are final and no discussion will be entered into. 22) RULES INTERPRETATION: The matter of any question as to the interpretation or application of these rules shall be decided by the committee in attendance, and their decision shall be final.
