Welcome to the exciting world of The Academy, Patrick Studios Australia.  The Academy is committed to providing high­school aged students with the support and training needed to inspire and stimulate their educational experience while truly enhancing their performance ability with the intent of producing well­rounded, highly developed individuals. Patrick Studios Australia is now one of the most recognised performing arts institutions in Australia and currently the largest full­time performing arts focused performing arts institution in Victoria. Patrick Studios Australia established The Academy in 2014 and the program has gained incredible traction since then. This handbook outlines the depth of opportunities that are available at The Academy, Patrick Studios Australia. The curriculum is geared towards the development of young creative artists and creative achievement coupled with solid academic foundations. We provide a safe and purposeful environment which students can confidently explore and engage with both artistic and academic education. We hope you are inspired and engaged by the arts and education that The Academy has to offer.

Our academic curriculum is provided by *Distance Education Centre Victoria. This model allows our students the flexibility to undertake supplementary performing arts training throughout their weekly timetable. Approximately 3­4.5 hours a day is allocated to academic study. For VCE students (yr 11 & 12) there is also optional additional study hours available on Monday and Friday afternoons. Internet access is available in both of our classrooms and our student lounge area. For each DECV subject, students are assigned a competency teacher at the DECV. The teaching faculty of DECV are qualified professionals with current VIT registration, proven ICT competencies and who have embraced the possibilities and challenges of teaching via distance modes. When our students require assistance or guidance these teachers are available via Skype, email or telephone. Contact can be made to DECV from the classroom telephone and computers provided at any time throughout the school day. Regular and ongoing contact between teacher and student is encouraged and expected. Subjects that require practical lessons that our Academy can’t provide will be conducted on site at the Distance Education Centre and will factored into their timetable. In addition to their subject teachers, DECV assign one supervisor to oversee all the students of our Academy. In order to ensure the best possible outcome for our student’s education we also provide our own qualified teaching staff on site at the studios. These teachers create a conventional school environment, complete within classrooms, and are able to offer face­to­face assistance. Teachers on site are familiar with the content of all units of study and will ensure workbooks are submitted on time, to the best of our student’s ability, and in accordance to the rules set by the VCAA and the DECV. The Academy Supervisor role allows open communication between DECV and our staff concerning each student’s education. Furthermore it allows for students to complete their SACs and other assessments that need to be supervised at Patrick Studios under our supervision. It is The Academy’s policy to withdraw students from all performing arts training if their academic work is not being completed satisfactorily. We regard both the academic and performing arts program as equals. * NB: Students who are accepted into The Academy must independently enrol with Distance Education. Our Academy will provide a ‘letter of offer’ to successful candidates. This must be attached to the enrolment form in order to be successfully approved. It is important to check the enrolment guidelines on the DECV website: www.distance.vic.edu.au   

In Years 7­10, the DECV’s learning programs are based on the AusVELS curriculum. In Years 11­12 the DECV follows the curriculum set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in our wide range of VCE and VCAL subjects. Learning programs are organised into manageable segments. Students are guided through the subjects they are studying and provided with tasks to complete, which are then assessed by teachers and returned with feedback. Individual learning programs are developed where appropriate so that all students, regardless of their age or ability can be engaged and challenged with their learning. All student reports are available online only. LAUNCHPAD All students enrolled in Years 7­10 participate in an orientation and assessment program called ‘Launch Pad’. All students will complete this module prior to starting their learning program. Launch Pad will be completed in the first two weeks after the student’s enrolment.      Launch Pad provides students with a sense of community at the DECV and within the online learning environment. The tasks that students complete in Launch Pad provide DECV teachers with information about the student’s interests and abilities so a customised learning program can be developed which is appropriate for the student’s learning needs.      At the completion of Launch Pad module, students will have a firm understanding of their place at DECV and our expectations of them; they will also be able to easily identify their teachers and important support services at DECV. Students will be introduced to all facets of the online learning environment and be provided with the skills they require to effectively learn at the DECV. Students will work with their Support Teacher to complete Launch Pad and prepare themselves for the academic year ahead. They will: • Learn how to use the DECV online learning environment; • Get to know their teachers and other students; • Test their literacy and numeracy abilities; • Plan for the year ahead. Topics covered via Launch Pad include; study habits, research techniques, cyber safety, problem solving, ICT skills, community awareness and personal and social competence. DISCOVERY LEARNING Discovery Learning is based on each individual student’s interests and educational needs and is completed alongside the student’s regular subjects. Discovery Learning develops the student’s research and problem solving skills with a focus on building independent learning. It also fosters a sense of connectedness to DECV and the online environment and is facilitated by the student’s Support Teacher. What do you do? • Complete research on a topic of interest; • Sharing knowledge and discuss topics of interest with other students; • Students organise and direct their own learning. What skills do you develop? • Plan a project and learn independently; • Develop the skills to collect and organise information effectively; • Learn to present ideas and new understandings in a variety of forms; • Develop critical and creative thinking skills.

As a private performing arts institution, The Academy High School of Performing Arts school fees are charged per­term with parents/guardians invoiced for their child’s fees a term in advance. Payment must be paid before the first day of each term or will risk potentially incurring other fee’s or removal from activities. In order to secure your position at The Academy, a deposit of $1,000 is due before December 1, 2015. Please note this deposit is non­refundable and is deducted from your p/a fees. The Patrick Studios Academy High School of Performing Arts fees for 2016 are $15,000p/a ($3,750per­term). Direct debited payment options are available through EZYPAY. Costumes are essential and required for Elite competition troupes and showcase performances. Costumes are charged at $65ea for the year, with additional payments required in Terms 2 & 3. The Academy uniform is taken very seriously. Patrick Studios Australia is proud to regularly have prestigious performing arts companies and notable artists within our building and it is important that we present ourselves professionally at all times. It is important that you have all the required items and that they are clean, ironed, in good condition and worn correctly everyday. Students are required to wear their uniform for any events outside of school where they are representing Patrick Studios Australia (e.g. Awards ceremonies, seminars etc..). Continual non­compliance with uniform guidelines will result in suspension from Arts classes. CLASSROOM In 2016, The Academy classroom underwent complete refurbishment and design conceptual change in order to accommodate for our increasing student numbers. An additional classroom has been created specifically for Senior School students assisting us to cater to their needs. We now boast in both rooms: • New individual desks • Mac desktop computers for both junior and senior school lab with *wifi • Lockable lockers for bags and dancewear. (All Academy students are provided with a locker, a key for which can be arranged with reception. Replacement keys are available from Reception, the cost of which will be charged to the student’s school account. A $15 refundable deposit is required at the beginning of the year to obtain a locker). • Personalised book shelving/storage • SAC Specific silenced room • Change area for dance classes *NB: wifi is not available for personal use on phones, tablets or MP3players.  STUDENT LOUNGE: The student lounge of The Academy creates a communal congregation area from which students can access couches and tables. By creating this relaxed space, students can access the deserved down­ time they require throughout their workweek. CAFETERIA: The Patrick Studios Australia cafeteria is prepared with a nutritional focus and caters specifically to the needs of young active teenagers. The Cafeteria is stocked daily with items such as; Sushi, boxed drinks, Powerade, fruit, health bars, dried fruit treats, banana bread and a variety of freshly made items are available throughout the day from 8:00am­2:00pm. 

ORIENTATION CAMP Introduced in 2016 is The Academy Orientation Camp at ACE­HI Ranch. The development camp is for all year levels (7­12) and is aimed at creating an environment away from the studio for mental and physical motivation. On the development camp, students will take part in team­bonding activities, listen to prepared lectures from Alumni and special guests, enjoy camp­activates (such as horse riding and flying fox, live in a cabined atmosphere with one­another and enjoy the rustic scenic views of regional Victoria.     

ANNUAL MUSICAL Also launched in 2016, was the Academy Annual Musical. Compulsory to all year levels 7­12, the Academy Annual Musical will also include performances from all groups of the Elite programs. Aimed at creating an inclusive and well­rounded musical environment, with singing, dancing and acting, the Academy Annual Musical will be an entertaining and thrilling extra­curricular activity for all.

ATTENDANCE 100% attendance is expected from all students at all scheduled classes, performances and special events throughout their time at The Academy. Failure to uphold a 95% attendance rate during their time here will result in a review of the student’s enrolment at The Academy. For safety and Academy protocol, all students are expected to sign­in at reception every day upon arrival and exit. If for any reason students are anticipating their absence, arriving late to school, or if a student needs to leave school early, a parent or guardian must contact reception or Nicole (Academy Director) as soon as possible: Phone: +61 (03) 9681­8856 Email: [email protected] / [email protected] MEDICAL FORMS / PROCEDURES All students must complete the medical information form including an Allergy Action Plan (if relevant to your child). If your child requires specific medication (such as an EpiPen), the school must be provided with one along with you AAP as well as give written notice detailing drug information and instructions. Should a student be absent due to a debilitating or contagious medical condition, notification should be made by phone to the studio at the earliest possible time. A medical certificate is required for any medical related absences.  Patrick Studios Academy accepts students on the basis that they are in good health and fitness. Should anything prevent students from engaging in physical training, The Academy must be notified immediately to avoid any further risk to their health.   In the event of an injury occurred in class, students must report immediately to the front desk, appropriate medical aid/support will be administered by Academy staff. A First Aid kits is available at reception for any minor injuries. (Please note Panadol or any other form of pharmaceutical medication cannot be given to any student).  

Todd Patrick PATRICK STUDIOS AUSTRALIA ­ DIRECTOR • Founder & director of Patrick Studios Australia, Kissing Bee Productions and Clover Agency & Events ­ one of the biggest and most successful performing arts schools in Australia who represent some of this countries greatest performers & acts • Model/choreographer for designers including Versace, Dior, Issey Miyaki, Gucci and Chanel across Europe and Asia. • Performed for an array of cabaret companies starting in The Lido in Paris, moving up to principal dancer and working for companies in Korea and Germany additionally for pop artists including Vanessa Amorosi, Ricki Lee Coulter, Zoe Badwi, Madison Avenue, Kate Alexa, Toni Pearen, Hi­5, Guy Sebastian, Kate Ceberano and Dannii Minogue in film clips, TV appearances and live performances.  He has also choreographed for international DJ’s and pop artists including Inaya Day (New York), Barbara Tucker (New York), Peyton(London), DJ Frankie Knuckles (New York) and Tune in Tokyo (Melbourne). • Theatre/television choreographic credits include; SK2, Target, Cabaret De Paris (Jupiter’s Casino),Sesame Street (XSystem International), Pororo Live (XSystem International), Ooh La La (Kissing Bee Productions), Sensation –Ocean Of White (Etihad Stadium), Peter and the Wolf (Melbourne Recital Centre), Countdown – The Arena Spectacular (Australian Tour) and Tobio (Malaysia). • Todd continually choreographs for corporate clients including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cricket Australia, KPMG, Flight Centre, HBA and Aussie Bum.

Nicole Caddaye ACADEMY DIRECTOR / CLASSROOM TEACHER  Nicole holds a Graduate Diploma of Primary Teaching as well as her current registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching, a WWCC and holds a wealth of experience with children of all ages. After completing her studies, for five years Nicole implemented educational programs as well as literary implementation & support at Parkdale secondary College. She taught examination English for years 7­10 and was the Rock­Eisteddfod coordinator during their Premier Division 2nd Place obtainship. In addition to her teaching qualifications, Nicole holds a Bachelor of Business Management and has worked for Allied Broking Insurance as their fundamental Business Manager. In recent years, Nicole has obtained her Southern Federation of Dance Teaching Certificate and is a well­ loved ballet teacher and English/Maths tutor across the city.

Amanda Stone DIRECTOR OF ELITE/JUNIOR SCHOOL Amanda Stone is the Academy Awards of Childrenʼs entertainment: Choreographer, Director, producer, Dancer and Teacher; she does it all with precision and an unrivaled professionalism. • Certificate III in Musical Theatre & Commercial Dance from Bartuccioʼs & Diploma of Arts (Dance Instruction and Management) from Box Hill Institute of TAFE. • Choreographed for American powerhouse Walt Disney Studios, Gary Ginivin Attractions (Lazy town Live , Pinnochio and Possum Magic) , Andrew K and Associates (Hairy Maclary & Friends and Bananas in Pyjamas ), Shine Entertainment (Thomas and the Hidden Treasure), X system Entertainment  (Barbie ­ Mattel, Nickelodeon, Hit Entertainment, Sesame Street Workshop, Astro Boy, Garfield, Care Bears), Marilla productions (Looney Tunes, Winx Club, Totally Spies and Strawberry Short Cake). These shows have been performed all over Australia and Asia to huge success with Australia’s biggest and best musical theatre talent, resident Choreographer and Show Director of Marilla Productions for several years creating stage shows to tour throughout Asia and Australia, Vic Moves” a dance based competition for Victorian Secondary schools in 2010 at the Melbourne Comedy Theatre, Co­ Choreographed “Peter and the Wolf”, an educational contemporary dance piece, performed with a live orchestra at the melbourne recital Center in 2011. Due to popular demand it returned for a second season in 2012, produce live shows of Sesame Street and Pororo in Singapore. • As a dancer she has worked right across the globe from commercial events to blockbuster ET News, Kylie Minogue’s body double, TV shows, film clips, cheerleading for Melbourne Storm and huge corporate events for all of Australiaʼs best Choreographers. Amanda also danced in every Disney production in Australia and Asia for several years 

Andrew Hallsworth DIRECTOR OF MUSICAL THEATRE • Andrew Hallsworth is one of Australia’s leading choreographers. He won the 2014 Helpmann Award for Best Choreography in a Musical for his work on the Hayes Theatre’s inaugural production of Sweet Charity as well as the 2015 Helpmann Award for Best Choreography in a Musical for his work on the GFO/Opera Australia production of Anything Goes, currently touring Australia. • Andrew’s other recent choreographic credits are Dream Song, Shane Warne The Musical (concert version), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and the World Premiere musical An Officer and A Gentleman. Andrew co­choreographed the international production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert with Ross Coleman. He restaged Priscilla for Broadway followed by Italian and Brazilian season, US and UK Tours, and very recently the Swedish, Korean and Spanish productions. • For Melbourne Theatre Company Andrew has choreographed Private Lives, Rupert, Hamlet, Next To Normal and The Drowsy Chaperone. • For The Production Company he has co­directed and choreographed The Producers and Anything Goes, choreographed La Cage aux Folles, The Pirates of Penzance, Gypsy, The Boy from Oz, Carousel, Mame, The Boy Friend and co­choreographed The Music Man and Bye Bye Birdie with Ross Coleman. • Further choreographic credits include the original Australian production of Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision, which was revived for the Edinburgh Festival, West End and UK tour, Menopause – the Musical, Leader of the Pack – The Ellie Greenwich Musical (Betty Pounder Green Room Award winner for Best Choreography), Sideshow Alley, The Merry Widow for Melbourne City Opera, Wombat Stew and Prodigal. • Cabaret shows include Doris Day – So Much More Than the Girl Next Door starring MelindaSchneider, ‘Tegrity and Show People starring Christy Whelan­Browne, Newley Discovered starring Hugh Sheridan, Todd McKenney – Songs and Stories of Peter Allen and Cry Me A River – The World of Julie London starring Rhonda Burchmore. • Andrew’s television credits include the Australian series of So You Think You Can Dance, Indigeridoo and Ja’ime’s Assembly Routine on the cult TV show We Can Be Heroes, Dead Gorgeous for ABC/BBC TV, The Librarians for the ABC and Mr and Mrs Murder for Fremantle Media (TEN) Alison Mantegazza TEACHERS AID Karen Ermacorma VCE/VET DANCE • (Currently Studying) Master of Engineering (Civil) ­ After graduating with a Degree in Dance The University of Melbourne, Parkville. from the Victorian College of the Arts, • Bachelor of Science (Civil Systems) ­ The Karen worked as a contemporary dancer University of Melbourne, Parkville. with TAS Dance Company & Danceworks • Certificate II Information, Digital Media & performing across Australia. She Technology [ICA20111] Asia Pacific Training Institute coordinated, choreographed & danced in (APTI), Melbourne. multiple Dance Fest seasons of • Certificate of Spanish (LOTE) VCE Level – independent dance, completed her Victorian School of Languages (VSL), Collingwood. Jason Duff BALLET A graduate of the Australian Ballet School with Honours after studying with Michelina Di­Salvatore in Leeton NSW. The first Australian recipient of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, awarded by Kitty Dukakis in his graduating year. An exchange program to the US and the Bolshoi Ballet. There after gained entry into the Australian Ballet Company, performing soloist and principal roles touring nationally and internationally as well as the West Australian Ballet. Performer for; “Hello Dolly” (Australia), Lido (Paris)., Mardi Gras Organisation events with international guests, “Helmet” for Gary Stewart, Sydney Dance Company, performing in numerous industrials, commercials, film clips etc.. Resident Choreographer for Jersey Boys  Nick hedger SINGING After graduating from WAAPA (BA Music Theatre) in 2012 Nick made his professional debut performing in The Production Company's "Pirates of Penzance" in October 2013 and in Hook Up at the Melbourne Fringe. Nick featured in the workshops/readings of Air Supply musical, “All out of Love”, in Playground at Chapel Off Chapel, and as part of Chapel Off Chapel’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations. Whilst at WAAPA, Nick performed the role of, The Baker, in ‘Into the Woods’, and was also featured in ‘How to Succeed…’, ‘Xanadu’ and ‘Violet’. In 2006, whilst with the Young Australian Broadway Chorus, Nick toured US high schools performing the role of Pascal in Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank’s musical, ‘The Silver Donkey’, later reprising the role in an MTC reading. Nick performed and wrote his cabaret, ‘Crap I Found in My Room’, at The Butterfly Club in July 2013. Simon Stotey ­ STRETCH/CONDITIONING/ACRO Simon trained at the ROYAL BALLET in London and worked as a dancer with the BEJART BALLET company in Europe. He later studied physical theater and acrobatics with the late Johnny Hutch ( A British legend in Circus and acrobatics). Simon has performed in London’s West end as an acrobat / Dancer/ singer and actor. He has featured in nearly fifty TV commercials and a few short films. Recently he has worked for GLOBAL CREATURES, performing in ‘How to train your Dragon’. Simon has performed with OPERA AUSTRALIA in Aida and Rigoletto. Simon’s knowledge of the human body and how to build lean beauty, strength and flexibility is unique. He is a passionate teacher and coach with the ability to help you develop your skills and talent.  KIM ADAM ­ Jazz/Lyrical Kim has worked extensively in the industry including movies,television,corporate events and promotions. In 2008 Kim along with good friend Paul Malek, they created a dance company called " Collaboration the Project" a company that inspires and allows dancers a chance to explore different avenues of dance and choreography, since opening Collaboration they have produced numerous award winning productions and have grown in recognition within the professional industry. In october 2012 Kim choreographed and directed her first  show "4 LETTERS" at Theatreworks. Kim also gained a scholarship to attend the prestigious L.A school "The Edge" which she learnt from the likes of Adam Parsons, Tovaris Wilson, Eddie Garcia and Mandy Moore just to name a few. Kim's movie credits include "The Wog Boy" movies and "Bad Eggs" she was also the assistant choreographer. Major corporate events include Shared Tables Crown Casino,BHP ,"Countdown the Arena Spectacular" "Channel 9 Footy Show" Carlton Football Club Cheerleader,Nova Radio Dancer, World Cup South Africa Hip Hop event, "Urban Vibe Hip Hop Challenge". 

Melanie Hawkins ­ COMMERCIAL JAZZ During her time completing fulltime dance at Patrick Studios Australia, Melanie performed for many corporate and commercial events including Countdown One and Two, the Hairspray movie premiere, Ricki­Lee film clips and cheerleading for the Dragons Basketball team and The Rugby Sevens in Dubai. Barely out of school, Melanie made her professional musical theatre debut in Shout! ­ The Legend of the Wild One, followed quickly by Wicked The Musical (Ensemble/Witch's mother) and Rock of Ages (to name a few). Nadia then went on to study full time dance and performance at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance where she was offered a scholarship to further her training for a second year. As well as a dancer she has a unique passion for choreographing and creating which in 3 short years has lead her to choreograph and be apart of such events as Vega fm idol party, featured dancer on Neighbours (Network 10) dancer for MC Hammer on the 7pm Project (Network 10) and a finalist for Short and Sweet Dance 2010 and 2011. She has choreographed for Melbourne's biggest industry night 'Immersed' and also for the event 'Underground'. She has recently returned from the United States where she trained intensely in all genres of dance at Broadway Dance Centre, Debbie Reynolds and Millennium Dance complex.

Entry to Patrick Studios Academy is strictly by audition only, at anytime throughout the year, with all applicants seen. Students are selected on the basis of talent and their future potential to benefit from the training provided. Positions for The Academy are open for years 7­12 throughout Victoria, Australia (and those looking to relocate from the international community). During the audition, each candidate is to prepare; ­ A short monologue ­ A dance solo (in your chosen style) ­ x1 song (32 bars / 1minute) Students should be mindful to prepare appropriate pieces and be ready to be asked questions about their choice. Students will also undertake a brief personality interview with Academy Director Nicole Caddaye and Patrick Studios Australia Director Todd Patrick, where in which you will need to provide your previous years report cards.
