NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN OPEN THE MEET
The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team hits the road for its 2017 season opener, making its annual appearance at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., on the campus of the Air Force Academy. In addition to No. 11 Air Force the Sooners will also face club team SC United and the OU club team. The meet begins at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 14.
TRADITIONAL START
The Sooners have won 17 consecutive Rocky Mountain Opens dating back to head coach Mark Williams’ first year at the helm for OU in 2000. Last season the Sooners posted an impressive 448.550 to beat second-place Air Force by more than 20 points, and swept all six event titles.
SCORING CHANGE
A big storyline in 2017 will be changes made to the code of points used to score routines. “The code of points has changed so there are only four special requirements on each apparatus instead of five,” Williams said. “Each special requirement is half a point. Basically they have combined some element groups and reduced the overall requirement. Typically we have said that a really good score is a 14.500 to a 15.000. We’re going to see that same routine score between a 14.000 and a 14.500. A lot of good gymnasts are going to be doing routines that are in the high 13s. The team score is going to be affected and each individual score is going to be about a half a point lower.”

Oklahoma is chasing a third consecutive national championship in 2017 after completing back-to-back undefeated title runs in 2015 and 2016. The Sooners have repeated as national champions three times under Williams but have never won three in a row. The last program to accomplish that feat was Nebraska, which won four straight from 1980 to 1983. Williams was part of those Cornhusker teams as student-athlete and then as a graduate assistant. Three or more consecutive titles has only happened two other times in NCAA history (Penn State, 1959-1961; Illinois, 1939-1942).
CHAMPIONS RETURN
The Sooners return a pair of individual national champions from 2016. Sophomore Yul Moldauer made history a year ago when he became just the second freshman ever (Sam Mikulak, Michigan) to win the all-around title. Moldauer is also a favorite to contend for the national title on parallel bars this year. Senior co-captain Colin Van Wicklen won the national title on floor last year. Van Wicklen, a seven-time All-American, is a serious title contender on floor and vault in 2017.
VETERAN PRESENCE
In addition to its two national champions, Williams’ squad returns five All-Americans from last year’s title team. Sophomore Levi Anderson (HB), senior Allan Bower (PH, PB, AA), junior Hunter Justus (SR), sophomore Yul Moldauer (FX, PB, AA) and senior Colin Van Wicklen (FX, VT, HB) all earned All-America status a year ago. The Sooners also return redshirt senior Josh Yee who was an All-American in 2015 and senior Todd Dowdy, also a 2015 All-American.
IMPACT FRESHMEN
OU welcomes a pair of talented freshmen for 2017 in Matt Wenske and Tanner Justus. Wenske boasts a decorated junior career that includes a first place finish in his age group in the all-around competition at the 2015 Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships. At the 2016 U.S. Championships he tied sooner great and 2016 summer Olympian Jake Dalton for the event title on vault as a senior in high school. Justus finished first in his age group on vault at the 2013 and 2014 Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships. He also took first on vault at the 2015 P&G Championships and finished tied for third with Wenske in the all-around competition.

SEASON PREVIEW The Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team seeks its third straight national title, and 11th overall, in 2017. To continue their two-season long unbeaten streak, the Sooners will have to replace a pair of graduated seniors, both All-Americans, and navigate a year of expectations that couldn’t be higher. “I think they understand that we are at the beginning of the process of another season,” head coach Mark Williams said. “Nothing is a given until you get out there and prove that you are capable of repeating some of the things we’ve done in previous seasons.” The preseason No. 1-ranked Sooners return five AllAmericans and a pair of national champions from a year ago and will lean on that core of experience in their title run. Senior Colin Van Wicklen took the 2016 national title on floor, headlining what was the Sooners’ strongest event on the year. Fellow national champion Yul Moldauer (allaround) also earned All-America status on the event a year ago and will be a key to the OU lineup. Oklahoma is also looking for big scores from seniors Allan Bower and Todd Dowdy. “We are always strong on floor,” Williams said. “We’ll rely on our returning national champion Colin Van Wicklen, who is excellent there. Yul is very good on floor, Allan (Bower) has always done a good job there, and we have Todd Dowdy back who was an All-American two years ago. We’ll be good on floor, we just need to get in a little better shape and get better on landings as time goes on.” Pommel horse is typically an event that separates teams and the Sooners’ success on the event could be key to their title hopes. The Sooners lose strong scores from graduates Kanji Oyama and Sergey Resnick but return an All-American in Bower. “We have been a little slow being able to replace those guys with the same consistency and high level of gymnastics, so we will see a couple new guys performing on that event,” Williams said. “Allan Bower is really good on the event and he will definitely be the anchor there. Yul (Moldauer) is also a really good swinger. I think it will take a little time for that group to get the experience needed to be a really strong team.” Still rings may prove to be the Sooners’ deepest event. While they may lack the top end talent of years past,
they have a wealth of gymnasts capable of providing consistently strong marks, including returning AllAmerican Hunter Justus. “We generally have five or six guys that can give us pretty good scores,” Williams said. “In total I think we’ll be fine on that event. I just don’t think we have someone that will be like a Michael Squires that can pull us out of a struggle at times. Thao Hoang will be one of our better guys. We are hoping to get him as an All-American and Reese Rickett is also really good on that event.” Vault may prove to be a big advantage for the Sooners this season. The Sooners have added difficulty in the offseason and will have the versatility to be able to make strategic decisions about risk in meets. “We’re good on vault,” Williams said. “We have a number of high level vaults. Levi Anderson has picked up a new vault. He didn’t do a lot on vault last year but he’s doing a pike-double. It’s high-risk, high-reward. We’ll try to break him into the lineup as the season goes on and try to keep him safe. He’ll be doing one of the top vaults out there. Freshman Matt Wenske is doing a triple-twist and he tied for the national championship with Jake Dalton at the U.S. meet last year. Todd Dowdy is also a great vaulter and has been an All-American in the past. I think that’ll come down to staying healthy doing those big skills, but we can run with anybody on that event.” Another strong event for the Sooners, parallel bars, will give Moldauer a chance to show off his dazzling skills. The sophomore missed out on the national title on the event by just .050 a year ago. “In our preseason Red/White meet that was probably our best, most consistent event,” Williams said. “I’m not sure we have a huge amount of depth there, but Yul has a chance to compete for being the national champion on the event. He is that good. Allan Bower has been awesome and is always consistent there.” The Sooners return a pair of All-Americans on high bar in Anderson and Van Wicklen. The anchor event of Olympic order will be another chance for the Sooners to hold serve. “Another key event for us,” Williams said of high bar. “We have guys that are good on that event, but because you have to let go and recatch the bar it is critical to the team score. Just like last year that it is not an event that creates a tremendous amount of separation, but it’s also not going to hurt us.”
