3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

January 24, 2016

From the Desk of Deacon Chris….

YOU CAN DO IT! You may be wondering what it is that you can do. In order to answer that question, I have to start by telling you about the end of our recent evangelization meeting. We were just about finished with the meeting when I reminded the members present that their roles don’t require them to do everything at every event. In fact, their role is most fulfilled when they are able to recruit others to help us with spreading the Gospel of Jesus. The question came up about how one might answer this remark that so often comes up, “I don’t feel qualified to evangelize, I don’t know enough.” My answer was pretty simple as I replied, “Just ask the person if they believe in Jesus.” If they say they do believe in Jesus, just tell them to talk about what they believe. You can do it! My friends, you don’t have to be ordained to evangelize. You don’t have to be a biblical scholar to evangelize. You just have to be yourself. You know Jesus taught his disciples through the use of parables which are stories with a message. So if you want to teach people about the Gospel of Christ, just tell them your story. Jesus went to the people, and talked with them. Just have a conversation with people, and share what you know and believe. You will be surprised at just how much you do know. When Jesus sent his disciples out to neighboring towns and villages, he told them to take nothing with them as they spread the “Good News of Salvation.” He also told them not to worry about what they would do, or what they would say, because His Holy Spirit would be with them. Don’t worry, Jesus is always with you. You are His disciple. There is a part of the Rite of Ordination to the Permanent Diaconate that I want to share with you. Deacons are ordained to proclaim the Gospel at any Mass they serve. During the ordination rite the Bishop presents the deacon with the Book of Gospels and says these words that I try to always remember in my efforts to evangelize. The Bishop says, “Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.” My friends, you can do it! God bless.

Whether your throat is scratchy due to dry air or because you’re fighting off a cold, here are four of our favorite things you can do to ease the discomfort: 1. Gargle with a salt-water solution to reduce inflammation, loosen mucus, and flush out irritants that contribute to a sore throat. To make a salt-water gargle, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle a mouthful of the solution for 30 to 60 seconds, three times a day. Spit it out, don’t swallow it. 2. Sip honey and lemon tea. Mix one tablespoon of honey with a squeeze of lemon juice and some warm water. Sip away. 3. Try a neti-pot with a salt water nasal rinse morning and night or, if that fails, try a corticosteroid nasal spray, available over the counter without a prescription. Nasal sprays — both salt water alone, and corticosteroid — reduce postnasal drip, which can contribute to a sore throat. 4. Run a vaporizer in your bedroom through the night. Breathing either warm or cool mist, especially while you sleep, will reduce swelling in air passages, improve mucus membrane function, and soothe an irritated throat. If your sore throat lasts for more than a week, or if it’s difficult to swallow, see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition. http:// www.clevelandclinicwellness.com
