Montreat CONFERENCE CENTER

You Are My Beloved: Baptism to Transfiguration The theme of the 2015 Montreat Conferences on Worship & Music is “You Are My Beloved,” journeying through the time after Epiphany, from Baptism of the Lord to Transfiguration. Through daily worship, workshops, classes and rehearsals, this often neglected season of the church year will be given a closer look as we delve into its riches. Unique to this conference will be discussion of the church’s ministry through weddings, examination of proposed revisions to the Directory for Worship, classes to help the church learn how to welcome people with physical and intellectual disabilities, and more. Annual offerings of worship and Bible study; choral, handbell, and instrumental music; as well as visual art and drama will draw us into community with each other in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Young adults will be encouraged to join together for discussion and discernment, as well as have fellowship together. Children and youth will have fun and games, and also learn how to be the church that celebrates and welcomes those with physical and intellectual disabilities. As always, this rich array of ensembles and activities for adults, youth, and children will equip the church to better serve the world, as it examines “who is the beloved.”

Of Note for 2015 Inspired by the daily scripture passages of the week’s worship services, several classes in addition to daily worship will address the issue of “who is the beloved.” Of particular note will be an intergenerational class, Celebrating Our Entire Body – Disability, Vulnerability, and Church Communities. This will give us all a new perspective on the church as the body of Christ. Recognizing that “the beloved” includes people around the world, Routley lecturer I-to Loh will lead us in a seminar and a hymn festival in Christian expressions from the Asian experience. Acknowledging that our community begins with the very young, a demonstration class of Music for Young Children will aid in connecting with the very youngest as part of our beloved body of believers. As in 2014, there is a seminar specifically for Young Adults. This year there is a suggested daily schedule to encourage a sense of community among these who are beloved as the future leaders of the church. The Gospel lesson in Tuesday’s worship, the second Sunday after Epiphany, is the story of the miracle at the wedding at Cana. Picking up from this will be a timely seminar, Rethinking the Christian Wedding. There will be an opportunity to look at proposed revisions of the Directory for Worship, and a chance to offer input that will be shared with the revision committee. For the first time, Instrumental Ensembles will be offered for Middlers with an interest in sharing their gifts with the church. A daily, multi-generational Guitars in Worship Jam Session will look at the wide variety of uses of the guitar in worship, and provide leadership in several of the services during the week. The Monday evening Organ Recital will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Asheville, featuring the pipe organ which was newly rebuilt and expanded (fall of 2014) by Holtkamp Organ Co. This will also give conferees a chance to see the striking renovations of an older sanctuary.

This group will explore and perform literature of an intermediate level and will perform in the Friday evening concert.

• Beginning – A beginning

ringer should have a basic understanding of music reading. The beginning ringing class will utilize Level 1 handbell music. This group does not perform outside of the classroom setting. www.PresbyMusic.org

For the best possible musical offering, choirs for children and youth will be grouped according to the grade children and youth will be entering in the fall as follows: Senior High Rising grades 10, 11, 12 Middlers Rising grades 7, 8, 9 Children Rising grades 4, 5, 6 This grouping will also apply to all classes/seminars for children and youth. Young Adults (age 18-21) may participate in Adult and Senior High classes.

Group Leaders and Chaperones

All groups of children and youth must be accompanied by adult group leaders and chaperones for the entire week. Chaperones are responsible for ensuring that conferees attend all classes, rehearsals, and morning worship. They must accompany children and youth, supervise behavior, and assist with activities for children and youth.

Proficiency levels, as defined by Handbell Musicians of America, are explained here: www.PresbyMusic.org/hb.html.

11

Children and Youth

There must be at least one chaperone for every six children and/or youth. A list of all chaperones must be included with the group leader’s registration. Chaperones must be 18 years of age or older. The church through whom a chaperone is registered assumes all responsibility for the behavior and actions of that chaperone. Churches are responsible for conducting any appropriate background checks on individuals serving as chaperones. PAM will not be responsible for the actions of chaperones. Adults registered as conference participants who are also leading groups may attend all adult classes and worship services, and participate in adult ensembles. Adults registered as Chaperones may participate in worship, but are expected to attend youth and/or children’s classes and rehearsals to monitor attendance and behavior. Participation in ensembles is limited to individuals registered as Adult or Young Adult conference participants. Those registered as Chaperones must check in at Upper Anderson with all other registered attendees to receive a badge for admittance to children/youth events and to sign up to assist with particular classes.

+ Celebrating Our Entire Body – Disability, Vulnerability, and Church Communities (Bethany McKinney Fox) Intergenerational. We will explore different perspectives about disability and the church practices that grow out of them by drawing on multiple foundations – Henri Nouwen and the L’Arche communities, perspectives within disability studies, scripture demonstrating Jesus’ engagement with people with disabilities, and multiple interviews with church leaders. There will also be teaching and conversation about what it means to be a church that truly celebrates every member of the body, including those with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Handbells (Stephanie Wiltse, Jason Krug, Karen Thompson) [+ Certification credit for Intermediate and Advanced classes] Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced handbell choirs rehearse several times daily. Several choirs will play during daily worship and the Friday evening concert. A description of levels is located at www.PresbyMusic.org/hb.html. + Directory for Worship (Kimberly Bracken Long) A look at proposed revisions to the Directory for Worship with opportunity for input, which will be sent to the revision committee. + Drama (Clark Campbell-Taylor) There is no greater story than The Great Story our Creator eternally creates. These age-segmented classes are designed for everyone seeking to explore that story through the dramatic arts. Participants will engage in an array of theatre games and exercises, text study and storytelling exploration. While the thrust of the classes will be on techniques attendees can use during worship, classes, and fellowship times in their home church, the week will also include performance opportunities. Guitars in Worship Jam Session (John Dull) All guitarists are invited to bring their (acoustic) guitar and capo for a semi-structured jam session. We will work through a list of repertoire (hymns and songs of all styles, and even some instrumentals!) chosen by the instructor, but also have opportunities to play other selections chosen by the group. + Preaching Seminar (Kimberly Clayton) “In a sense, every Sunday is Epiphany Sunday”: Ed Searcy, pastor of the University Hill Congregation, made this observation to his congregation that worships in the Chapel of the Epiphany at the Vancouver School of Theology. It was more than a remark about the physical location of their worship service. “Dictionaries,” Ed continued, “tell us that epiphany is a ‘manifestation.’ As a ship’s manifest details what may be found in its hold, so the biblical narrative alerts the church to the God it can expect to meet in the Risen Christ in every age. …It trains us to be on the watch for God.” How does worship train us to be ‘on the watch for God,’ revealing what has been hidden? We will explore the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, specific narratives, and other elements in our worship ‘manifest’ and discuss how they alert us to the God we can expect to meet.

By examining the biblical and theological foundations of marriage—as well as matters of church and state—we will look at what the church has to offer couples who are preparing for marriage, those doing the hard work of staying married, and those whose marriages have ended.

+ Professional Development (Anne McNair) Explore the nuts and bolts of resources designed to help in the music ministry of the PC(USA), including the Book of Order, Directory for Worship, PAM Professional Certification, conferences, and publications.

Young Adult Classes

Reading Sessions Music for different ensembles will be featured Monday through Wednesday, with a handbell reading session Wednesday evening and a Small Church reading session on Thursday. Please register for each desired session to ensure music availability. Retirement Seminar (Clark Simmons) This seminar looks toward retirement from church service including the Board of Pensions of the PC(USA). Financial planning, health, lifestyles, relationships, and other issues will be discussed. + Routley Lectures (I-to Loh) Two identical sessions. “We sing what we believe!?: Inspirations and challenges from some new Asian hymns.” We usually take it for granted that we sing what we believe, but often we enjoy the beauty of the music more than perceiving the meaning and purpose of the texts or understanding responses in their liturgical contexts. The session will introduce some new Asian hymns and explore the implications of this conventional statement. + Rethinking the Christian Wedding (Kimberly Bracken Long) Ministers and musicians often say that they’d rather take part in ten funerals than one wedding. In this class we will consider why people get married in the church, and how the church can be involved in weddings with integrity and authenticity.

It will include brief presentations on various aspects of conference worship, but the larger perspective of the plenary will include explorations of common values, best practices in worship design, and suggestions for translating these ideas for use in the local congregation and other contexts for ministry. DO try this at home!

Bring a piece or two of your favorite guitar music (instrumental or song accompaniment) and join in the fun. Bring a notebook for all the ideas you may gather here. All are invited even non-guitarists are invited to observe and learn more about what guitarists are capable of doing! (The Jam Session is Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m.) Handbells (Stephanie Wiltse, Jason Krug, Karen Thompson) Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced handbell choirs rehearse several times daily.
