CHÂTEAU SAINT-ROCH CHIMÈRES 2012 (Domaine Lafage) AP Côtes du Roussillon Villages, France 119354 (D) 750 mL $18.95 2

TASTING NOTE: Made from 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan, the 2012 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Chimeres is mind-blowing stuff that comes from 100- to 105-year-old vines and spent 8-12 months in a combination of 500-liter barrels and concrete vats. From primarily schist soils, it boasts knockout aromas of black currants, smoked earth, licorice and wild herbs that give way to a full-bodied, voluptuously textured effort that has a loaded mid-palate, no hard edges and serious length on the finish. Possessing a solid 4-5 years of prime drinking (if not more), it’s a brilliant value that readers need to snatch up. Score: 93 (Jeb Dunnuck, erobertparker.com, Feb. 2014)

A TUSCAN RENAISSANCE Some of history’s greatest stories have benefitted from a reboot. Tuscany, that most iconic of Italian wine regions, has gone back to the drawing board (or rather, the vineyard) in the last five decades to renew its focus on quality. Some classic expressions of the region’s hallmark Sangiovese variety, such as Brunello, have been synonymous with premium quality from the beginning; others, such as Chianti, have been revitalized by Tuscany’s modern wine renaissance. Meanwhile, the spirit of innovation in the region has also led to the exploration of international varieties, the creation of new wine styles and the discovery of new frontiers. VINTAGES 3

SUPER HEROES In nature, evolution can take thousands of years; with the Super Tuscan wines, you can see it within a single generation. Sensing that established winemaking regulations were stifling creativity and quality, pioneering Tuscan wine producers decided to operate outside the DOC rules to create a new breed of premium wines using international grape varieties. These ‘Super

Tuscans,’ led by prototypes Sassicaia and Tignanello, emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s and were at first designated as Vino da Tavola – the most generic Italian wine classification. They were upgraded to IGT in 1992, with the Bolgheri appellation earning its own DOC in 1994. The most prestigious subappellation, DOC Bolgheri-Sassicaia, is expected to be elevated to DOCG status. While Sassicaia (made in Bolgheri primarily from Cabernet) was seen as an outlandish curiosity, Tignanello (made right in Chianti itself from primarily Sangiovese with Cabernet in support) and its immense popularity sparked a renewed interest in wine quality and innovation in the heart of Chianti.

A HALF CENTURY SINCE THEY BURST ONTO THE SCENE, SUPER TUSCANS ARE STILL BREAKING NEW GROUND.

A winemaker takes a break during the harvest in Chianti.

ROOTED IN SCIENCE, THE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2000 PROJECT REVOLUTIONIZED THE APPELLATION’S WINES. SIMPLE TO SUPERB Tuscany’s modern wine renaissance is not just about the Super Tuscans. Indeed, it reaches to the very root of its most famous appellation, Chianti, and most famous grape, Sangiovese. Recognizing that their namesake had become known globally as a simple table wine, in 1987 the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico set its sights on ramping up quality. The aim was to modernize grape growing in the vineyards of 6 VINTAGES

Chianti Classico by way of a comprehensive scientific study and thereby create premium wines of character. To achieve this, the consortium’s scientific branch teamed up with the agricultural faculties of the University of Florence and the University of Pisa and focused on six aspects – classic grape varieties, rootstocks, planting density, vine training, soil management and clonal selection – for improvement. Sixteen experimental vineyards were planted and, over the next 16 years, monitored and evaluated. The results of the study led to a dramatic climb in quality and revolutionized the wines of Chianti Classico, elevating them to their earned position among Italy’s finest wines.

Score: 92 (Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 2013)

TASTING NOTE: The Melini family has been making wine since 1705 – eleven years before the Chianti wine region was even delimited. Here’s an ultra-smooth, fruit-driven and fresh Chianti Classico. The long, bold finish serves up chewy tannin. (VINTAGES panel, June 2014)

RESERVED FOR A HANDFUL OF THE BEST WINES, GRAN SELEZIONE IS CHIANTI CLASSICO’S NEW GOLD STANDARD. IL GRIGIO DA SAN FELICE GRAN SELEZIONE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2010 DOCG (San Felice)

RAISING THE BAR Many of the world’s most prestigious top-tier wines – Grand Cru Burgundy, First Growth Bordeaux and now Chianti Classico Gran Selezione – combine hallowed terroir with the highest standards. Approved in 2013 to recognize the pinnacle of quality in the region, the Gran Selezione label applies to the top 10% of the wines of Chianti Classico. To qualify, wines must be made exclusively from grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyards, are subject to the region’s most stringent yields, and must mature for at minimum 30 months before release.

TASTING NOTE: This gorgeous, structured wine, made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% other native grapes, is all about depth and complexity. Tuscany has produced wine for centuries, it’s still full of surprises. Vintners continue to seek out new and exciting potential vineyard sites – and much of the action revolves around Maremma. Constituting the southern half of Tuscany’s west coast, Maremma is Tuscany’s newest wine frontier. Its northern reaches include the now-famous Bolgheri appellation that birthed the Super Tuscans and, inspired in part by the resounding success those wines represent, wine growers are planting an increasing number of new vineyards in Maremma. Hey, if The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and David Bowie can reinvent themselves and explore new ground, why shouldn't Tuscany?

The Okanagan Valley stretches approximately 160 km from the relative cool of the Kelowna district in the north to the desert-like conditions of Osoyoos in the south. Between these points, a range of mesoclimates permits the cultivation of more than 60 varieties, from light, fresh whites to powerful, fullbodied reds. Among a number of potential sub-regions that have been identified, one, the aptly named Golden Mile Bench, has been officially elevated to Okanagan Valley Kamloops DVA status (see below) – a landmark acknowledgement of the maturation and growth of BC winemaking.

1. Kelowna

3. Okanagan Falls

The soils here comprise sandy loam, clay and limestone. This relatively cool growing region favours grapes such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay. There are Riesling vines here that date back to the late 1970s, and Kelowna is home to British Columbia’s oldest winery, Calona, established in 1932.

Okanagan Falls is home to many of BC’s most notable sparkling wines. The unique climate, the elevation and a bewildering array of soil types permit cool-climateloving Alsatian varietals such as Gewurztraminer and Riesling to thrive in one vineyard, while other vineyards produce successful Pinot, Chardonnay or Cabernet. This strikingly beautiful part of the Okanagan is further enhanced by the many terraced vineyards.

REGIONAL RECOS: Gray Monk Pinot Gris 2013 or Mission Hill Reserve Shiraz 2012 (see page 13).

2. Naramata Defined by rolling hills and sloping vineyards, Naramata benefits from the proximity of Lake Okanagan, which mitigates freezing winter temperatures and spring frosts while allowing for a long ripening period in the fall. Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot flourish here. The Pinot Noir grown here is notably elegant in style. REGIONAL RECO: Therapy Pinot Noir 2011 (see page 13).

REGIONAL RECO: Look for See Ya Later Ranch Chardonnay 2012 in stores (126912; released Jan. 10, 2015).

4. The Golden Mile Bench This area originally known for its gold mines is now renowned for its wines. Soils are rocky and predominantly gravel and clay, with vines planted on the alluvial fans created by four creeks that flow down the mountains from the west side of the valley. This unique situation is in part why the wines are so distinct, and why this area

was designated as the first Okanagan Valley DVA (sub-Designated Viticultural Area) in October 2014. Many varieties do well here, but particularly Merlot, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. REGIONAL RECO: Tinhorn Creek Gewürztraminer 2013 (see page 13).

5. Black Sage/Osoyoos On the eastern side of the valley, the Black Sage region gets less sunlight than the Golden Mile. Osoyoos is home to the southernmost vineyards in the Okanagan, with temperatures approximately 3° to 5°C higher than those in Naramata to the north. Vines are planted in deep, quick-draining sand deposited by a glacial lake, and irrigation is necessary. The area is defined by powerful, fruity red wines, particularly Bordeaux varietals and Syrah. REGIONAL RECOS: Burrowing Owl Athene 2011 or Nk’Mip QwAM QwMT Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 (see page 15).

Israel has a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and hot, humid summers. Astrid Brummer, Ontario Wine Buyer

Sketch Comedy Who doesn’t love a room full of wide eyes and smiles? The brilliance of this wine from awardwinning winemaker Paul Pender of Tawse is that it finds the edgy medium between sweet and dry – just like a good dramatic comedy. There’s a dab of residual sugar to tantalize the taste buds and a rush of crisp acidity to cleanse the palate after. Open this bottle among friends for sipping, with apps, or with mains, and everybody’s happy.

IRISH WHISKEY KNAPPOGUE CASTLE 12-YEAR-OLD SINGLE MALT IRISH WHISKEY Aged in Bourbon Oak Casks TASTING NOTE: Castle Brands is one of the few small public companies in the global beverage alcohol industry. Triple distilled and aged in ex-bourbon casks, this is pale straw in hue with a gently whiskey barrel, bourbon nose with malty spice notes. Polished and focussed on the palate with flavours of nougat, citrus and flan, this is a flavourful whiskey with plenty of pleasing tastes in a medium body. It finishes smooth with a hint of vanilla spice and bourbon. Score: 92 (Margaret Swaine, winealign.com, Oct. 14, 2014) Medium & Sweet 223776

PORT BURMESTER LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT 2009 DOP TASTING NOTE: Burmester has enjoyed a long association with Port that dates back to 1750 when, as Burmester & Nash, the family was involved in the shipping of Port to England and across Europe. Their 2009 has a lifted and enticingly floral note accompanying aromas of spicy black fruit and vanilla. The palate offers a core of beautifully sweet fruit and more vanilla. CALAMUS RESERVE RIESLING 2012 VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Subtle white peach, apricot and floral aromas really burst into life on the palate, where a smidge of residual sugar softens the crisp acidity and adds a layer of texture. Slightly closer in style to Alsatian Pinot Gris than to Italian Pinot Grigio, this should appeal to fans of both. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2015)

KEINT-HE VOYAGEUR PINOT NOIR 2012 VQA Niagara Peninsula

LA CREMA CHARDONNAY 2013 Sonoma Coast

TASTING NOTE: A lovely, silky medium-bodied red wine with attractive aromas of fleshy berry and dark cherry with some spice on the finish. Nice aperitif or companion to seafood or roast turkey. Score: 90 (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, April 26, 2014)

People who are new to wine often ask questions along the lines of, “What is a good wine, there are so many?” One very simple piece of advice for narrowing your focus is to become familiar with what regions produce excellent examples of particular wines, such as California’s Sonoma Coast for Chardonnay. Crafted under the watchful eye of Elizabeth Grant-Douglas, La Crema’s director of winemaking (and a Canadian to boot), this wine has all the classic Sonoma hallmarks of citrus and ripe orchard fruit along with toasty oak and refreshing acidity. It’s a delicious place to start your exploration.

ROSEWOOD SELECT SERIES MERLOT 2012 VQA Niagara Escarpment TASTING NOTE: Merlot is going to become a rarity at Rosewood pretty soon; sadly their vines did not survive the brutal winter of 2013/2014 – and a wine like this makes it even sadder to say goodbye. This wine combines the juiciness of California with the acidity and brawn of Ontario. Nose has complexity of aromas like blueberry, raspberry, cherry and touches of subtle spice. Palate is juicy with a raspberry, plum mid, a touch of chocolate (which comes off more milk than dark), plus a linger on the finish that brings cherry and blueberry back for an encore presentation. A really appealing wine worthy of a BBQ or two, or maybe just a memorial sip in remembrance of fallen vines. RODNEY STRONG CHARDONNAY 2012 Sonoma County

WILLIAM HILL CHARDONNAY 2012 Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: This wine exhibits all the positive attributes of barrel fermentation – a fullness of aroma, creamy texture and layers of complexity not often found at this price point. While there’s a taste of richness the wine actually drinks lean, an exploration of Gravenstein apple and pear between swipes of lemon curd on toast. Score: 89 (Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 2014)

TASTING NOTE: Presented as a baby La Flor (which is Jonata’s Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon bottling), the 2011 The White is a borderline outstanding blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc, yet also incorporates Semillon and Viognier. As with the Chardonnay, it’s aged in one-third each new French oak, neutral oak and stainless steel. Offering up plenty of exotic green fruit, lychee, lemongrass and tropical notes, this medium-bodied, fresh and lively effort has great acidity, good texture and a clean, classy finish that has you coming back for another sip. NAPA CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012 Napa Valley

STERLING PINOT NOIR 2012 Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: This bottle delivers what you expect from a Napa cabernet: rich fruit, full body, and pretty high alcohol (14.4%). It also delivers a lot of complexity, good structure, and a very effective fruit-acid balance so that the fruit won’t overwhelm what you’re eating. I’m reminded of a South African winemaker saying that some wines (not his, of course!) jump out of the bottle and strangle any food in the vicinity. This cabernet most definitely doesn’t do that. Aside from the good balance, you’ll find easy-going tannins. It’s drinking well now and will hold well another four or five years. There is a sense of personality, freshness and balance here that I have not seen in the rest of the Novas series. Great value. Drink now-2016. SANTA CAROLINA SPECIALTIES DRY FARMING CARIGNAN 2010 Cauquenes Valley

This blend of 85% Viognier and 15% Marsanne represents a fine value from a renowned producer. TASTING NOTE: Deliciously aromatic and flavoursome. Textural too. Value screams out at you. Aromatic & Flavourful 401398 (XD) 750 mL $19.95

TASTING NOTE: The Mediterranean variety carignan was planted in the south of Chile a long time ago and has only recently come to prominence. This wine is made from grapes from two vineyards in the Cauquenes Valley; one close to the sea and the other more inland. It is a beautiful fruity vibrant wine that has a very Italian feel. Expect aromas of bright pure blackberry and black cherry fruit with lemon, pepper, rosemary and basil notes. The elegant palate shows lots of fruit but it’s vibrant juicy and quite beckoning, such that one can easily take another sip. Though very fruity it is well structured with a dry lemony finish. Its depth of flavour, energy and vibrancy are very appealing, as is the price. Try with lamb cutlets or a juicy steak. TAPESTRY BG & V SHIRAZ 2012 McLaren Vale, South Australia Buckwheat granola & vanilla? Banjo guitar & violin? In fact, ‘BG & V’ stands for ‘Bakers Gully & Vignerons’ – a nod to the Bakers Gully vineyard which, along with the Oliver’s Road vineyard, provides the fruit for this wine. TASTING NOTE: The three stacked stones on the label represent the delicate balance of the interdependence of soil, climate and craft that must come together to make great wine. TASTING NOTE: Not too dark, just mid crimson, with the narrow rim lightening up. Perfumed, almost balsamic dark fruit with a hint of cardamom and vanilla. Supple and not thick or stitched up at all. Elegant and with animating freshness and with a fine spur of grainy tannins. Score: 17 out of 20 (Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, Feb. 12, 2014) Medium-bodied & Fruity 395087 (XD) 750 mL $17.00

UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2015

MONTE DEL FRÁ LENA DI MEZZO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2009 DOC

SPAIN – RED WINE

Alison Napjus awarded this wine a rating of 91 points, calling it “An elegant red, richly flavored ... silky ... with supple tannins ... [and a] lasting finish” and suggesting a drinking window of 10 years. (winespectator.com, July 31, 2014)

TASTING NOTE: A full-bodied Rioja with great finesse, elegance and length. Love the tertiary aromas of tanned leather, cigar and violets. Mouth-wateringly juicy for a wide range of dishes from lamb to roast beef. Highly recommended. Score: 90 (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, Dec. 6, 2014)

BARON DE LEY GRAN RESERVA 2008 DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: Here’s a delicious Amarone, with aromas of spirit-soaked black cherry and spice. The palate is rich but refined, with succulent black cherry, raspberry and plum flavors all layered with nutmeg and white pepper accents. Score: 92 (Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 2013) Full-bodied & Smooth 047506 (D) 750 mL $49.95

PORTUGAL – RED WINE

BERONIA GRAN RESERVA 2007 DOCa Rioja (Gonzalez Byass)

CHURCHILL’S ESTATES VINHO TINTO 2011 DOC Douro

This wine was declared the Best Red from Spain at the 2014 Korea Wine Challenge and won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards.

TASTING NOTE: A meaty, rich and brooding red, offering plenty of mocha notes to the dark plum, dried blackberry and baker’s chocolate flavors. Presents accents of smoked paprika midpalate, featuring a finish filled with restrained tannins. Drink now through 2020. Smart Buy. Score: 93 (Kim Marcus, winespectator.com, May 31, 2014) Medium-bodied & Fruity 166561 (XD) 750 mL $21.95

2

TASTING NOTE: Dark and savoury with black fruit aromas on the nose, and a warm core of dark deliciousness on the palate. Some spices on the finish. Full-bodied and smooth. The 2007 vintage is drinking well now, but will also keep well in the cellar for a few more years. Pair with rack of lamb [and] thick-cut pork chop ... Score: 90 (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, Dec. 2014) Full-bodied & Smooth 940965 (XD) 750 mL $39.95

2

FINCA LA EMPERATRIZ RESERVA 2008 DOCa Rioja CONVENTO DE TOMAR RESERVA 2011 DOC Do Tejo (Quinta do Cavalinho) TASTING NOTE: The magnificent Tomar convent complex was once home to the Knights Templar. This wine, with its firm tannins and dense fruit, brings out the structure of Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Spice, wood aging and rich berry fruits all promise mediumterm aging. Drink from 2015. Score: 89 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, June 2014) Full-bodied & Firm 404434 (XD)

750 mL $17.95

2

TASTING NOTE: … a distinct note of mint and dill that I associate with American wood that I love (in small doses and as long as it does not overwhelm the wine) in traditional Riojas ... the blend is very classical 94% Tempranillo, 3% Garnacha, 2% Viura and 1% Graciano and the aging is indeed carried out in 70% American oak barrels. It is supple, tasty, with a chalky/mineral feel to it. It also has the crisp, fresh fruit from an Atlantic vintage. This might not be to everyone’s taste but I think it’s great to see a young winery producing a wine like this and at a great price. Bravo! Drink 2014-2020. Score: 93 (Luis Gutierrez, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013) Medium-bodied & Fruity 359927 (XD) 750 mL $32.95

SPAIN – RED WINE CONT’D OLIVARES ALTOS DE LA HOYA MONASTRELL 2012 DO Jumilla TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby. Smoky, deeply pitched dark berry compote, licorice and bitter chocolate scents show very good clarity, picking up a sexy floral note with aeration. Stains the palate with intense black and blue fruit flavors, with a lavender pastille quality emerging on the back half. At once rich and energetic on the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and smooth tannins. A remarkable value, from a country known for delivering bang for the buck. Score: 91 (Josh Raynolds, vinousmedia.com, Sept. 2014) Full-bodied & Smooth 163154 (D) 750 mL $13.95

Arrive in style with eponymous panache Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a mouthful, but so is this wine – a mouthful of flavour, that is. True to its name, this Napa Cabernet from Napa Cellars is 100% authentic Napa Valley and earned HHHHJ from Rod Phillips for its classic Napa complexity, structure and generous rich dark fruits. What’s in a name? A great deal.
