10 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO WATCH FULLER HOUSE Written by: Hayley Armour

10. The Plot Line Just like Full House, you can definitely expect some cheesy story lines. From lying to your family to getting in trouble at school, everything is coming full circle.

9. It’s About Time Ever since the series finale in May 1995, Full House fans have been begging for a remake for 20 years!

Page 5

8. Hugging It Out For years people have always counted on the Tanners to hug it out after learning a tough life lesson. The goods news is that that is not changing any time soon!

7. The Theme Song That song that would get you so pumped when you heard it come on the TV after school every day is back and even better! Plus, you will be proud to be Canadian after hearing Carly Rae Jepsen singing it!

6. The House Everyone’s favourite TV house is back! DJ is living in Danny’s old room, Stephanie is living in the basement, Kimmy is living in that awesome attic bedroom, DJ’s sons are in the room that her and Stephanie shared that was later shared by Michelle and Stephanie.

Page 6

5. The Catchphrases Everyone’s favourite one liners are back! Including: “How Rude”, “Hola Tannerinos”, “Oh My Lanta”, “You Got it Dude”, “Cut it Out”, and of course “Have Mercy”.

4. A New Puppy The family’s new puppy Cosmo is so adorable and related to comet. The puppy is Comet Junior, Junior, Junior!

Page 7

3. The Memories Remember that heart-warming moment in the first episode of Full House when Danny, Joey, and Jessie sang to Michelle to stop her from crying? Well, they recreate that moment with the new baby Tommy! And they use split-screen to compare the precious moments.

2. Everyone’s Favourite Characters are Back Like DJ, Kimmy, Stephanie, Uncle Jessie, Joey, Danny, Aunt Becky, Nikki and Alex, Steve, and even Harry Takayama (remember that adorable little boy Stephanie married in the backyard?).

The History of Saint Patrick’s Day Written by Tim Aiello, Prairie Hall

Every March, a particular holiday arrives where people get together and enjoy a night with food and friends. But at the end of the day, we often forget to think of the true meaning of St. Patrick’s Day is or who Saint Patrick even was in the first place. Saint Patrick probably would never have gained the recognition he has today if it were not for some rather unfortunate events that he experienced as a teenager. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and taken from Britain to Ireland where he was forced to be a slave. For six years, young Patrick shepherded the local sheep and cattle. It was after a vision from God, telling him to run to the coast, that he escaped his enslavement. He returned home to Britain and was reunited with his family. Later on in life, the now older Patrick had another vision, this time telling him to become a bishop and spread the good news of Christianity throughout Ireland. Some say that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the good doings of God through nature so this is why we remember him with this green symbol! There, he preached good news and built many churches to honor God. He passed away on March 16th, around 461AD at the first church he ever build in Ireland. There are plenty of legends and stories about Saint Patrick. The one that most people think of is that Saint Patrick drove out all of the snakes from Ireland. This is of course a great story to pass down along generations, but studies from scientists have shown that this story does not hold up. If you look at the geographical and fossil evidence, it becomes clear that Ireland never had any snakes so the old Saint would have nothing for him to banish in the first place! The holiday or feast of Saint Patrick is held every year on March 17 th. The day is celebrated around the world, and even on the International Space Station! Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield even recorded himself singing Danny Boy, a traditional Irish folk song, while he was there! Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday in Ireland where there is a mixture of good fun, and solemn remembrance of the good doings of Saint Patrick. Ireland has a celebration lasting five days that highlights Irish culture and includes multiple parades. Many towns and cities around the world also hold parades including Montreal and Toronto. Notably, the small village of Dripsey in Ireland has the world record for shortest parade at 23 meters: the distance between the town’s two pubs! My favourite fact is that the restrictions of Lent do not apply on Saint Patrick’s Day, so if you gave something up for Lent, this can be your cheat day! Whether it be that you’re out with friends or just enjoying the sudden increase in green on campus, just remember that even though Saint Patrick faced hardships and setbacks and he always did what he thought was right for the world. I think that if we took time and did what’s right and looked at the positives like ol’ Patrick, we can all live happier lives for now and the future!

The Recap

The executives of Mountain, Prairie, and Maritime had a grand time planning and running our traditional and annual event, the South Wide Condom Casino! Condom Casino is one of South’s biggest events of the year and after a few months of planning we were able to pull off this very successful event! Condom Casino is an event created to spread awareness of safe sex and safe gambling! This event occurred on Thursday, March 3 from 6-8pm in Eccles Centre. We had around 100 students attend throughout the event and they all had a great time!

Students were encouraged to dress semi-formal and many were seen very well suited up! Admission was $2 and was open to all students on campus. At the door, students were given ten “chips”, which were actually mints, which they would use to bet with in the games in the casino. We had many games set up including Red or Black, Black Jack, Texas Holdem, and Spin the Wheel!

Page 10

If students bet too harshly and lost all their ten chips, they were allowed to pay another $2 to receive ten more chips. However, students were only able to pay $2 extra one time so to teach them to gamble carefully and so to not run out of chips.

Once gaining enough chips, students were encouraged to visit the prize table where there were sex toys, gift baskets, and Guelph swag that they could trade in their chips for. We also had Wellness set up a booth on safe sex and they were handing out free condoms. All students were waited on by fellow Interhall Council members with amazing appetizers and drinks as well!

Overall the event was a huge success! The executives of Mountain, Prairie, and Maritime would like to thank Wellness, Interhall Council, and all our students for making this event a great night! We can’t wait to see you again next year!

NON-ALCOHOLIC ST. PADDY’S DRINKS It is well known that St. Patrick’s day is a time to celebrate, but who said you needed alcohol to have a good time? While still keeping to the famous green colored theme of St. Patrick ’s Day, here are the top 3 non-alcoholic drinks to make for any St. Patrick’s festivity. Written by: Kelsey Dal Pai

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PUNCH Made with just three ingredients: lime sherbet, pineapple juice and ginger ale. Here’s how to do it: 1. Add a small jug of pineapple juice and ginger ale to the bowl. Amounts vary on the size of the punch, so aim for half of each. Or add more of one depending on your like of pineapple or ginger ale. 2. Add 5-8 scoops of lime sherbet on top. This will also depend on the size of your punch. Note: It’s best to put together the punch right before serving to prevent the ginger ale from going flat. To make an individual sized drink, fill the glass half and half with pineapple juice and ginger ale, then add 1-2 scoops of sherbet.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH: SUPERSTITIONS AND PISEOGS OF IRELAND

Written by: Lindsay Williams For many years, the Irish have been historically associated to luck and superstitions. The Irish are notorious for superstitions, so much so that it is hard to live your day-to-day life without considering superstitions. Around this time of year, especially with Saint Patrick’s Day rolling around the corner, we see signs of good luck and bad luck popping up everywhere. Green and coins which is associated with good luck and fortune, horseshoes and four -leafed clovers (also known as shamrocks) which also associated with good fortune, all these different signs seem to be associated to the upcoming holiday. But are these just hallmark symbols for the Irish-based holiday? Or are we missing the real superstitions of Ireland. We will be diving into some common superstitions, or “piseogs” as they are known in Ireland, as well as some folklore to tackle some of the misconceptions that North Americans may have about the Irish. To much surprise, wearing the colour green is considered bad luck. In fact, Inishowen anglers try to avoid painting their boats green for this reason. Similar to the superstition that it is bad luck to white after Labour Day, it is only good luck to wear green in small amounts, like on a pin or a ribbon or even a t-shirt, and only on Saint Patrick’s Day. If you are not wearing green on Saint Patrick’s day, you may be pinched by your friends as a sort of punishment. Another notorious Saint Patrick’s Day symbol, the horseshoe is also iconic in Irish culture. If there is a horseshoe in the household, that in

Page 15

pinned to the wall or door (there are many interpretations of the placement of a horseshoe in the household) in the upright position, it will ensure that the good luck in the household will not run out. It is also good for an Irish bride to incorporate a horseshoe into her wedding ensemble, to ensure good fortune in the marriage. There is also an old maid’s tale that follows, if you find a horseshoe on the ground, you must spit on it and then throw it over your head to have good luck. However, if you do find one, pick it up! You can only obtain a horseshoe by spontaneously finding it, you cannot obtain one as a gift or by purchasing one- otherwise it is bad luck! The shamrock, better known in the Western world as the four-leafed clover is extremely lucky in the Irish culture. They are such a rarity to come by as regular three-leaved shamrocks are most common in the plains of Ireland. However, if you are to find one, it symbolizes good fortune and prosperity when it comes to gambling and racing. Similarly, the four leaf shamrock will protect you from any witchcraft that may come your way. But you will only be lucky and safe from the witches if you keep the shamrock to yourself. That means no showing your friends! Now for our friends the Leprechauns. These tricky little guys live in the mountains of Ireland, where they make shoes. It is said that if you catch a Leprechaun, he will grant you either a pot of gold, or good luck for the remainder of the day that you caught him in exchange for his release. But beware, these folklore characters are small and mischievous, and will try to trick you to be released! On this Saint Patrick’s Day, be wary of the many superstitions. If you don’t believe in them, that’s okay too. Just be safe, and may the luck of the Irish be with you!

WEATHER SQUIRREL: YIK YAK’S HOT TOPIC WRITTEN BY: LINDSAY WILLIAMS As every University of Guelph Gryphon knows- or at least should know by now- the university campus is completely overruled by squirrels. These fluffy friends of ours can be seen roaming about the campus, rummaging through garbage, or scurrying around the arboretum. However, in recent months, a new kind of squirrel has emerged, taking the campus by the cannon. The weather squirrel. Known by the University of Guelph herd on Yik Yak, the Weather Squirrel posts updates every morning about the daily weather. It provides updates on the highs and lows of the day, as well as the general atmosphere outside (cloudy, slight rain, flurries, fog, etc…). This beloved hero has taken over Yik Yak and has stolen the hearts of many Guelph Gryphons. Typically on Yik Yak, you will see many students posting, asking about the Weather Squirrel, and what his update of the day was- as more people post past posts, like Weather Squirrel’s, fade to make room for more. His popularity has sprung in the past few months so much so, that he has had a few imposters. Including a very angry looking squirrel who posted only when there was going to very bad weather outside. Stay true to you Weather Squirrel, we Gryphons appreciate your daily updates!
