Stories Presid ent's Rep ort Posted by Greg Dux on Nov 19, 2011

Many thanks to Steve Penfold for his most informative talk on the Rotary Foundation. Additional comments from D.G. Graham, A.O.G. Michael and Secretary Andrew, all added to the quality of the presentation. The accountability which is built into the expenditure of Foundation funds and the fact that all monies are spent in full on the various projects and programs, not on “administration”, is a fact which makes this branch of Rotary, unquestionably, one of the world’s leading and best functioning charities.

It is important to note that two of our members, Catherine Bonifant and Pauline Armstrong, are very involved with the Foundation at district level. Catherine deals with all aspects relating to Peace Scholars, while Pauline is a counsellor for Ambassadorial Scholars. As most would be aware, we will be seeking a matching grant from the Foundation in relation to the water project in Africa. Congratulations again to our newest club member, Melissa Brown. Our best wishes to you, Melissa, for a long and fruitful association with Rotary. A date to keep in mind:

Chair: Pauline Armstrong Pauline called meeting to order at 6.15pm and gave the Loyal Toast The International Toast was given by Bill Connelly. Bill asked us to toast the Rotary Club of Wien-Schwechat, a club in Austria that meets every Tuesday night at 7.00pm at a restaurant called “Le Gourment”. Bill chose this club as it is the club of Richard Rohrhofer, a resident of Hope Island and an acquaintance of Bill. President Greg welcomed members and visitors. Mention was made of the book – “Humanity in Motion”, a copy of which was on each dinner table. This book gives a great presentation in words and pictures of the work Rotary does around Australia. DG Graham further added that the book was really a marketing exercise for Rotary in order to attract new members. It is designed for Doctors surgeries and other similar waiting rooms. A reminder was given about the Inner wheel dinner on Friday. Another working bee is being planned for St Vincents de Paul. Please watch this space and be ready with wheel barrows and gloves. Melissa Brown was then inducted into the Club. Melissa’s early career was with the RACQ in Brisbane. After completing a business degree, specializing in computer studies and international business, in 2002, Melissa moved to Canberra, where she was employed by the Australian Federal Police Force. She primarily worked in sections dealing with criminal records, ministerial matters and policy. While in Canberra, she studied part-time for a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies at the Australian National University and has a goal to complete a PhD on the Security of People Movement in the AsiaPacific Region. Melissa recently left her employment with the A.F.P. and moved to the Gold Coast to be near her elderly parents. Secretary’s report: 29 members and one visiting member. Directors’ Reports: Beth Dermoudy mentioned next week’s visit to Gold Coast Bulletin and the need to be there at 5.30 sharp. We are to go in second entrance as first one is for staff. Definitely need closed in shoes. Steve Penfold – • annual reports available to be picked up. Sorry about the state – he said “got eaten by dog” but in reality Steve had his car stolen and this property partially destroyed.

To ny's Joke of the Week Posted by Tony Gardner on Nov 19, 2011

A catholic priest and a Jewish Rabbi were seated together on a long plane flight. They struck up a conversation and eventually the Rabbi asked,' Are you allowed to marry father,' 'No', said the priest, 'We are sworn to a life of celebacy.' 'Well,' said the Rabbi, ' You mustn't have much fun.' Priest ' Not true. If I am avery good priest I may one day become a bishop.' Rabbi, 'Well you may live in a flash house and have a driver but you still don't have much fun.' Priest. ' If I am a very good bishop I may be made a cardinal.' Rabbi. 'Cardinals may live in a palace as a prince of the church, but you still do not have much fun.' Priest. ' Rabbi , If I am an exceptional cardinal I may become pope.' Rabbi. ' So you are the pope living in the Vatican with lots of servants, but you still do not have much fun.' Priest a little agitated ,'Rabbi, who would you like me to be? Jesus Christ himself ???' Rabbi,' Well father, one of our boys made it!!!!'

Regards, Tony Gardner.
