France France's history with wines can be traced back to the times of the Roman Empire. When the Romans expanded, they planted vineyards as they went. The religious orders in France took care to protect these grape vines during the Dark Ages. Many noble varieties of grapes are ones that have been refined in France over the centuries to produce a high quality of flavor. France's climate and geography makes it quite unique, and in many ways perfect for growing grapes. The growing season is long, not too hot, with just the right amount of rainfall. Much of the soil is chalk and limestone, providing great drainage for the vines. The centuries of research they have done on the grapes has taught the French just which grapes grow in each particular area. The main wine producing regions in France: Bordeaux – This region is the most well known in France and produces some of the world's best wines. Burgundy – This area is home to the most appellations in the entire country of France. Languedoc-Roussillon – This area has the most planted vineyards in France. Loire Valley – Produces mostly white wines and is divided into four subregions. Rhone Valley – Produces mostly red wines and is located along the Rhone river.

Spain Spain has a long history of producing fine wines, particularly the red wines of Rioja. Surprisingly, however, this famous name is just one small region among many, some of which produce equally good wines. Some of these regions are huge, and account for the fact that Spain has the largest area of land dedicated to viticulture of any country in the world. Spain has a similar classification system to France and Italy, with all classified wine regions regulated under the Denominación de Origen (DO) system. A wine guide for a whole country in just a few words is a difficult task, and I try to pick out the best regions, based on my own personal experiences. In red wines we have the Ribera del Duero, a region of vineyards situated around the Duero river. Despite Rioja's reputation, it is in fact the Ribera del Duero that is home to Spain's most expensive wine, produced by Vega Sicilia. There are some splendid wines to be had in this region, based on a mixture of international (Cabernet Sauvignon) and indigenous (Tempranillo) grapes. Further east, and back to the north a little, is Rioja. The epitome of fine red Spanish wine for generations, Rioja can still be superb. The grape of note is the Tempranillo, although there are some plantings of lesser grapes, including Garnacha Tinta (known as Grenache in France). Going down a bit to the center is Valdepeñas, a red wine region, less important than Rioja or the Ribera del Duero, which produces good value drinking wines. Some of the best producers are using oak-ageing to add more appeal to their wines.

Italy There is no other country on earth with a wine culture like that of Italy. There are over 2000 indigenous varieties (native grapes) spread throughout this beautiful country. In Italy there are a myriad of classified regions each one is home to a unique viticultural industry, from the cool climates in the northeast such as Alto Adige and Friuli to the warm, sunny zones of the south such as Campania, Puglia and Sicily. Be it delicious whites with vibrant acidity or powerful reds that age for decades, Italian wines present every color in the rainbow, viticulturally speaking! Italy has a similar classification system to France and Spain, with all classified wine regions regulated under the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) or Denominazione di Origine Controllata et Garantita (DOCG). Piedmont in the northwest of Italy may be the most significant Italian wine region, for it is the origin of perhaps the greatest Italian red wine, Barolo. Nearby is Valpolicella, a red wine DOC.In the hart of Valpolicella is located Tommasi, a family viticultural firm founded in 1902. Since then the Tommasi estate has growth on the production of high quality whites and red wines. This DOC is in the running for top Italian red wine

Champagne When it comes to this famous wine region, there aren't many different appellations to remember. In fact, there is just one: Champagne. Hence, if you see a bottle with the word 'Champagne' on the label, it acts as a guarantee that this wine has been produced in this cold, northern French region, and nowhere else. French monks were the first to bottle a sparkling form of wine called Champagne, named after the Champagne region of France. The method of making "mousse" (another name for bubbles) in a bottle was invented by the efforts of Frère Jean Oudart (1654 – 1742) and Dom Pierre Pérignon (1639 – 1715), Benedictine monks and cellarmasters at the respective abbeys of Saint-Pierre aux Monts de Châlons and Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers What determines the quality of the bottle is the style of wine inside it. A non-vintage (often abbreviated to NV) wine is a blend of wine from several different years. They are blended so as to maintain a house style, and this is the entry level for Champagne. Vintage wines are produced from a single year, and most houses will only release a vintage wine if they deem that the grapes harvested that year are of sufficient quality. Accordingly, they are more expensive than the NV wines. They are identifiable simply by the presence of a vintage year on the label. Prestige cuvées are released by some of the top houses, and here quality can be excellent. Some examples include Dom Pérignon

(Moët

et

Chandon),

Année

(Bollinger),

(Roederer), La Grande Dame (Veuve Clicquot), etc…
