Governor's Message By Luciano de Sylva

January, 2017

Fellow Rotarians, I would like to wish you and yours a happy and successful 2017.  It seems that with every succeeding year, time flies by ever faster. Would you believe that we are already into the second half of the Rotary year?

District Governor Luciano de Sylva and wife, Hazel 2016-17 Inside This Issue Governor's Message Rose Parade Float

Events District Conference Hilton Palm Springs Resort May 17 - 22, 2017

Rotary International Convention

It is time to reassess where we are as Rotarians and redouble our efforts to do our parts to accomplish the goals that we and our clubs set forth set forth in July, at the beginning of the Rotary year. Did you bring a friend to Rotary, someone who might be a good addition to your club? Remember that many who would love to join Rotary have never been asked.  Have you helped in any way to let others in the community know the good things that your club is doing in the community?  Are you contributing to The Rotary Foundation  and, or taking advantage of the grants available to do good in your community and the world? What are you doing to make our youth services programs available to the youth of the community? Hazel and I spent much of our time from July to December visiting the many wonderful clubs in District 5300. It was a truly enjoyable experience and we thank you all. This second half of the year will be dedicated to helping the clubs on accomplishing their goals. Assistance in the writing of grants, and information about the Rotary Foundation will be readily available. Remember also the concentration on Youth Services with the 4-Way Test Speech Competition, The Dan Stover Music Contest, and RYLA. If the Club has not yet signed students up for these activities,  now is the time to do so.  President’s Advance – Club Presidents should be attending the upcoming President’s Advance; if possible the President Elects as well. It is an opportunity to meet with their classmates to exchange experiences and ideas. It also prepares the Clubs to have a great finish to the year. Rose Parade Float - Congratulations to PDG Larry Skaggs from the Green Valley Club. Under his  leadership of the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee, our Float won the Princess Award for most beautiful  float in the Rose Parade under 35’. Many Rotarians had the opportunity to meet with and speak to RI President John Germ and his wife Judy  at the dinner held in their honor  on December 30 sponsored by the Rotary Rose Parade

Float Committee. A good time was had by all. In Rotary Friendship and Service, Lu Luciano de Sylva Governor Rotary International District 5300 951-285-1777

Salvation Army Bell Ringers Success! September 10, 2009

Rotary Rings for Salvation Army Three Southern Nevada Rotary Clubs: Downtown Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Summerlin collected $2,722.15 ringing bells for The Salvation Army at Downtown Summerlin; a 27% increase over last year’s amount. Each of the three Clubs rang bells on one of the three Saturdays preceding Christmas. The Clubs compete for the “Little Red Kettle” which is awarded to the Club that collects the most donations. This year’s winner is again, Summerlin. The Little Red Kettle Award will remain housed at Las Vegas Summerlin for another year.

Pasadena Bikes for Christmas On 12/15, Rotarians from 3 clubs met at Pasadena Salvation Army Tabernacle for the culmination of months of planning and lots of hard work on the part of Pasadena, Altadena and San Marino Rotary Clubs and Salvation Army volunteers. It is the great "Bikes for Christmas" event started by Past-President Kathy Meagher one year ago and expanded this year. Thanks to the leadership and dedication of Pasadena Rotarians Dr. Paul Martin, Kathy Meagher, Captain Terry Masango and others, we have created some real Christmas magic.    Through the collaborative efforts of our three local Rotary Clubs, we were able to purchase 200 new bicycles at cost from Huffy. The bikes

were able to purchase 200 new bicycles at cost from Huffy. The bikes range in sizes from 12 inches to 20 inches to accommodate children as small as toddlers up to age ten. "Every kid wants to wake up on Christmas morning and see presents under the tree, but unfortunately this reality is not true for many of our families who are struggling to make ends meet. The Salvation Army is happy to step in, with the help of the Rotary Club, to provide toys and bikes for these deserving families in our community," Pasadena Rotarian and Salvation Army Captain Terry Masango noted in a recently published Pasadena Now article.  Weeks ago, approximately 50 Rotary volunteers got together one chilly Saturday morning and assembled the 200 shiny new bikes. The volunteers included five San Marino High School students that are a part of the campus Interact Club. The Pasadena Unified School District provided a storage facility for the bikes before assembly and up until Tuesday when they were transported by Rotarians and Salvation Army volunteers to the Salvation Army Tabernacle assembly hall. Once delivered, Rotarians volunteered their time to conduct one last quality control check and to make sure the proper paperwork was affixed to each bike. Bows were made with loving care and placed on each bike by Pasadena Rotarian Jane Waas. Goody bags provided by CRAIC Technologies were added too!   Each bike will be registered with the Pasadena Police Department and then combined with a helmet and lock. To fund the purchase of the helmets and locks, donations from Huntington Hospital and the Pasadena Community Foundation were added to the generous collection taken up by the Pasadena and San Marino clubs when we passed the hat at our meetings. The helmets were obtained at cost through a local cycle shop in Northwest Pasadena named  Around the Cycle, and Dr. Paul Martin took on the task of ordering and picking up the locks. What a wonderful opportunity we have to brighten the holidays for some deserving kids!

San Marino pays respect to Veteran San Marino Rotary hosted a Welcome Home Luncheon for returning SMHS Class of 2011 graduate and patriot Ollie Campbell  last December 29.  Some 160 Rotarians and community members attended this tribute.   In mid-January 2016, Army Ranger Sgt. Campbell, while on night patrol seeking a high value enemy target, was ambushed and shot five times.  On the way to an evacuation helicopter, his litter failed, and he had to walk 200 yards...in severe pain and with much internal bleeding.  On a C130 his heart stopped for 5 minutes.  Army medics broke into his chest cavity, massaged his heart, and quite miraculously ...he survived.  Proclamations were made by the City Council, School District and Chinese Club.  Additional presentations were made by his high school guidance counselors and classmates.  All related their appreciation not only for his military service but for his sacrifice and acknowledged his on-going medical recuperation.  Sgt. Campbell and his father rode in one of the three iconic Wells Fargo stagecoaches during the Tournament of Roses Parade on January 2.  Now, medically discharged, Campbell plans a 3 month vacation in Africa and Europe...before attending college.  His first stop is to Cape Town.  A fellow high school classmate and current peace and conflict Global Grant Scholar Jenifer Binley is completing her studies there now.  Small world!
