To facilitate community inclusiveness, civic interest, investment and involvement to sustain and improve the quality of life for residents.

December/January 2017

SAVE THE DATE… JANUARY 10TH ANNUAL MEETING IT’S TIME TO GET DOWN TO BUSINESS! Did you know there are over 7,000 households and numerous businesses within our boundaries? We reach about half of you every other month through our newsletter. We keep up with City activities that affect you – zoning and board of adjustment cases and community forums on your health, safety and welfare – and ask you what you think. Our board volunteers its time gladly, because that is what being a neighborhood association is all about – sharing the news and letting City Hall know what we think, as well as providing venues for getting to know each other better. And we promise more of those little gettogethers in 2017. Like you, we feel the need to share the news about what really counts – our families, our friends, our health, - the interests that make life worth living as well as working together to maintain our property value. Your next opportunity to be involved in VJNI will be our Annual Meeting. Join us Tuesday, January 10, at 5:30 p.m. for a get-together with your neighbors and membership renewal before the business starts at 6 p.m. We will be meeting at St. Matthews Catholic Church in the Parrish Hall, 10703 Wurzbach Road. We will conduct the usual business, of course – reporting on what we did in 2016, adopting a budget, asking you what you want to do in 2017, and electing board members from the various parts of VJNI. And, we’ll consider a few changes to our bylaws. If you are wondering what is going to happen to the traffic on Wurzbach or Vance Jackson Roads, or what those stripes mean on Colony Drive or Powhatan, City and TXDOX staff will be there to discuss and answer questions. Councilmen Nirenberg and Krier have been invited. So, have a Merry Christmas and make a New Year’s Resolution to join us on January 10, 2017.

TURNBER RY WAY

With so much taking place at the Annual Meeting, we want to make sure you have time to consider what you learn about our traffic situations. Comment cards will be available if you don’t get your questions answered that night. Be sure to give us your comments at the end of the meeting. We will pass them on to the Councilman, and he and/or his staff have promised to return to our next general meeting, Thursday, February 23, 2017, with responses.

What we’d like to do is elect board members who live in all parts of VJNI. The terms are for 2 years. Board members will be meeting every other month, and there will be four general meetings with programs and a few other ‘mixers’ throughout the year.

HU

You have no doubt noticed the bike lanes that have been painted on Colony Drive and Powhatan. The City’s Transportation and Capital Improvements Department staff will explain their features and answer questions. Councilman Krier has heard from proponents and opponents about the bike lanes and wants to know what we think. Before we can respond, let’s find out more about it.

This newsletter contains a map of VJNI. You can see that the boundaries are Huebner Road on the north, the railroad tracks on the east, Callaghan Road on the south, and Interstate 10 on the west. That’s clear. What is confusing is the inside. How do you know which little ‘neighborhood’ you are in – for purposes of becoming a board member? Our bylaws state that each neighborhood may have two representatives. But, what is a ‘neighborhood’? We are defining it as one or more subdivisions within our boundaries, and it may be a voluntary grouping or a mandatory association. We will have a listing of subdivisions at the meeting.

PV T

We were contacted by a neighbor who expressed the frustration of many who try to enter Wurzbach Road from VJNI side roads during rush hour traffic. Wurzbach Road now receives the traffic from the Wurzbach Parkway, which was designed to provide an alternative and direct east-west thoroughfare between Loops 410 and 1604 across the Northside. This saves drivers a longer-distance commute on the incomplete grid of northern San Antonio. We have invited TXDOT and City staff to give us an update on what is being planned to provide relief to our neighbors.

PROPOSED BUDGET FOR 2017 Income: Memberships [171, a 25% increase, X $25].........$4,260 Fall Fundraiser..........................................................740 Donations............................................................. 2,000 $7,000 Expenses: Newsletter printing and distribution [6 issues]...$4,260 Board Insurance.....................................................1,244 NNOD Membership Dues........................................50 General Meeting Expenses.......................................800 Electronic Communications.....................................500 Miscellaneous...........................................................146 $7,000 * This is an ambitious budget. But, think of it like public radio. So many more people listen ‘for free’ than pay for the service. Our newsletters are like that. They are sent to many more neighbors than get around to joining. We believe in the service we provide and want to make it available to as many people as possible. I remember one public radio drive where friends gave up the names of their friends to the station, who called them on air to ask why they hadn’t joined. How embarrassing. I’m not suggesting that you do that to your neighbors, of course, but you might just encourage them to join, if they haven’t already. If you have any questions about any budget items, please contact me at [email protected].

Holiday Safety Tips Decorating Safety • Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs, curtains/drapes, or with any potentially flammable item. • Wear gloves while decorating with spun glass “angel hair.” It can irritate your eyes and skin. A common substitute is nonflammable cotton. • When spraying artificial snow on windows or other surfaces, be sure to follow directions carefully. These sprays can irritate your lungs if you inhale them. • Small children may think that holiday plants look good enough to eat, but many plants may be poisonous or can cause severe stomach problems. Plants to watch out for include: mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherry and amaryllis. Keep all of these plants out of children’s reach. • When displaying a tree, cut off about two inches off the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. • Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways. • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. • If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. • Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. • Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. • Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Unplug extension cords when not in use. • If using a natural tree, make sure it is well watered to avoid dry branches from catching fire from the heat of light bulbs. • When displaying outdoor lights, fasten them firmly to a secure support with insulated staples or hooks to avoid wind damage. Never nail, tack or stress wiring when hanging lights and keep plugs off the ground away from puddles and snow. Ladder Safety • When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks or other furniture. • If you have to use a step ladder near a doorway, lock or barricade the door and post signs so no one will open it and knock you off the ladder. • A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height. • When you climb, always face the ladder and grip the rungs to climb – not the side rails. Always keep three points of contact Vance Jackson Neighborhood, Inc.

on the ladder whether two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. • When climbing, keep your hips between the side rails and do not lean too far or overreach. Reposition the ladder closer to the work instead. • When using ladders outdoors, get down immediately if high winds, rain, snow or other inclement weather begins. Winds can blow you off the ladder and rain or snow can make both the rungs and the ground slippery. Hosting and Food Safety • When preparing a holiday meal for friends and family be sure to wash hands, utensils, sink, and anything else that has come in contact with raw poultry. Keep in mind that a stuffed bird takes longer to cook. • Never defrost food at room temperature. Thaw it in the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. • While doing holiday cooking, keep your knives sharp. Most knife injuries occur due to dull blades. • Use a clean food thermometer to cook foods to a safe internal temperature before serving. • Avoid cleaning kitchen surfaces with wet dishcloths or sponges. They easily harbor bacteria and promote bacteria growth. Use clean paper towels instead. • When reheating leftovers, bring the temperature up to at least 165°F to eliminate any bacterial growth. • Refrigerate or freeze leftovers in covered shallow containers (less than two inches deep) within two hours after cooking. Date the leftovers for future use. • Being a smart party host or guest should include being sensible about alcoholic drinks. More than half of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related. Use designated drivers, people who do not drink, to drive other guests home after a holiday party. • The holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year. You can’t avoid stress completely, but you can give yourself some relief. Allow enough time to shop for gifts and meal items rather than hurry through stores and parking lots. Only plan to do a reasonable number of errands. Source: www.nsc.org
