I’m writing this after having just dropped off Molly for school on Monday morning. Because of the weather, this is her first day back to school in…what, three months? That may not be accurate, but it sure feels that way. It was a morning full of sleepy eyes, slowmoving bodies, and a few tears…and it got worse when we woke the girls up. Our routine has been so disrupted we may need a GPS to find it. I’ve observed with interest and some amusement the responses on Facebook to the prolonged school closings. I pray God’s blessings on the poor person who administers our school system’s Facebook page. They’ve been bombarded with words of hatred, pleas of reconsideration, and about a zillion questions that all ask the same thing: “Will there be school tomorrow?” Most of these have come from parents who are less concerned about their child’s education and more concerned that if the kids don’t get out of the house soon, they may not make it to their 18th birthday. The time off has certainly been a disruption in a lot of ways. This was not what anyone had planned. But isn’t that typical of life? We lay out our wellresearched, perfectly-timed calendar and then Old Man Winter says, “Surprise! I saved some snow and ice just for you.” We’re forced to rearrange schedules, postpone activities, and figure out how to entertain and feed these dear youngsters who weren’t supposed to be here all week. When these kinds of things happen and the anger and frustration builds inside of us, where do we take it? How do we vent the emotional pressure that’s building up? From what I saw, some people vented it on the school system’s Facebook page. Others, in moments of extreme distress, may have vented it on their children. And a few of us may have released our anger skyward (toward God, not Old Man Winter). Is God to blame in these situations? I guess that depends on how you understand the level of control God exercises in the world. In our current sermon series, we’re looking at some Christian clichés that we’re tempted to offer in the face of unexplainable circumstances. “Everything happens for a reason” and “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle” can sound like soothing platitudes…until you see the news report that tomorrow is yet another snow day and you’ve already had more than you can handle. Rather than look to God as the source of these life disruptions, I try to find God at work in the midst of them. I don’t believe in a God who causes bad things to happen, be it bad weather or a bad diagnosis. But I do believe that God is there, working through the situation to bring about good. So rather than shake my fist at the sky and curse God’s name, I try to say, often through gritted teeth, “God, I know you’re here. Show me.” When I was diagnosed with MS in 2001, my whole life calendar was disrupted. This was not what I had planned, and I worried about what it meant for my family, my job, and my future. I’ve never been more scared. So I asked God to show me that God was at work in this situation…and God showed up! God showed up in the Elders who brought me communion every day when I was in the hospital. God showed up with Rick, who had the courage to visit me on the same hospital floor where his wife had died a month earlier. God showed up in the youth group that held their Sunday night gathering in the hospital cafeteria so that I could still participate. God showed up in my loving wife and faithful friends and family who shared their love and compassion. Has God shown up for you this past week? Maybe it was when you shared a cup of hot chocolate with your child who, in the blink of an eye, will be asking for the car keys. Or maybe it was during when you took time to build a snowman with your family. Or maybe it was when you were able to take a deep breath at the end of a long, busy day. In the midst of hospital stays and snow days, God is there. It may not be what you had planned, but God is there. It’s OK to be frustrated or angry. We all like it better when things go our way. But when they don’t, remember that God is there.

REACHING OUT WITH ROBYN

FEBRUARY DWM SERVICE PROJECT: HOPE CENTER FOR WOMEN

We now have a centrally located area dedicated to drop off the many items being collected for our Outreach Ministries. The hallway leading into the Administrative Wing has been set-up as “Giving Lane.” From ink cartridges to items for DWM, the Giving Lane has bins for you to place your donated items.

We will be collecting shampoo, lotion, disposable razors, shaving cream, cough drops, Motrin (Ibuprofen), Tylenol (Acetaminophen), Aleve (Naproxen), Pepto Bismal, and Milk of Magnesia.

AM I BLUE?

These can be left in the DWM bin in the Giving Lane.

STOP before you toss that trash! If the container is blue, it is a recycling bin for paper, glass, cans and plastic bottles.

If you have any questions, please contact Sheri Shaver at 224-1040 or [email protected]

There are two containers at each refuse deposit station. One is labeled for garbage/trash and the other is for recycling. It only takes a few seconds of thought to be a better environmental steward. Thanks for your cooperation! The Green Team

MEALS FOR NEW PARENTS We have a new ministry here at Crestwood that will provide meals for our members who are new parents. We all know how wonderful it is when a baby arrives...and how hectic! By providing meals to families when a baby arrives, we hope to give them one less thing to have to take care of. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Whitney Sparks at: [email protected]

HELP THE DORCAS GROUP: POP TOP DROP The Ronald McDonald House wants the pull tabs from your aluminum cans. Before you toss the cans into a recycling bin, remove the tabs, collect them and place them in the Ronald McDonald “house” located in the Giving Lane- the hallway leading to the Administration wing. It's one more way Crestwood is reaching out to help others!

by Robyn Bles Greetings Crestwood folks, I know many of you think I’m crazy, but I love winter. I love the blanketed, sleepy garden outside my office window. I love the way snow hugs onto even the smallest of branches. I love the cozy fires, mugs of warm soup, and hot cocoa. I even love shoveling and walking through the snow. There are so many things to love about winter, but I think my favorite thing is it’s one of the only things that can slow me down. Quite literally, you have to slow your driving for fear of sliding on the ice. You have to slow you walking for that matter, too. We may not hibernate like many of our animal friends, but we all need a season of rest and renewal. We might think of spring and summer when we think of new growth and fresh starts; but those vibrant green shoots of something new don’t come about without this season of quiet creativity. It’s the season to take stock of what we have, only to realize we have quite a lot of goodness in our lives. It’s a season of gratitude. In her poem On Winter’s Margin, Mary Oliver writes: “On Winter’s margin, see the small birds now … With half a loaf, I am the prince of crumbs” To some this season is a challenge, so scooping a neighbor’s sidewalk or purchasing a strangers coffee might feel like something small, but to them it is a royal gift. I hope each one of you has a chance to breathe deeply, stay warm, and take stock of what God is stirring within you. Caring for ourselves and one another is one of the greatest joys of the season. Reaching with you, Robyn

ANCHOR CLASS The Anchor Class keeps its participants grounded in faith through studies both contemporary and biblical; ample time for discussion and application; a commitment to being a loving presence in the class, congregation, community and world; and prayer.

NEW FAITH CLASS This class was formed with two goals in mind: 1) to offer a weekly study that is grounded in reading the Bible, and 2) to create an intergenerational class where people of varying ages and life experiences can work together to deepen our faith and understanding of God's Word. The class is currently studying the life of King David.

MARY AND JOSEPH CLASS This class is for adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who are concerned with raising Christian families and growing in their relationship with God. Participants take turns leading the class.

SEEKERS CLASS The Seekers Class explores a wide range of faith-provoking issues. From Bible Study to social justice issues to Christian ethics, the class delves deeply into the challenges of being Christian in a pluralistic world. The Seekers Class is currently using the Wired Word, an online current events curriculum. The class is led by various members.

LIBRARY CLASS Continues as a friendly, in-and-out class which engages in a wide range of current issue discussions. The Library Class is led by Loren Broadus.

SPIRITUAL LIFE CLASS This class studies scripture in a way which informs contemporary, spiritual living in today’s world, including the practical, hands-on ways of making personal growth an everyday reality. Members are currently leading the class.

YOUNG ADULT CLASS This class enjoys a time of fellowship and study as they discuss spiritual issues related directly to their place in life and how to live out their faith in the world.

ANCHOR CLASS EMBARKS ON A SERIES OF STUDIES ABOUT THE FUTURE OF CHRISTIANITY Join us for any or all of the studies that will take us through to the Regional General Assembly in late September. In January through early March, lead by Kory Wilcoxson, we will be discussing The Great Emergence by Phyllis Tickle. This book will help us make sense of our place of church in the world today - the history lesson on other times of great change, the social dynamics swirling around us and a roadmap to the future. How could you miss out on this opportunity to read, hear Kory's insights and share in discussion with others. Please join us every Sunday or any Sunday from now until Lent! After Lent and Easter, we will continue our series with And God Said What? by Margaret Ralph and Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and The Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening by Diana Butler Bass who will be a keynote at the Regional Assembly in September in Hopkinsville, Ky.
