SUPPORT YOUR HOST TOWN! WHAT IS SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES? The 2015 World Games will be the largest event hosted by Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. The venues will be world-class, including Special Olympics Athlete Villages at USC and UCLA, and a star-studded Opening Ceremony on July 25, 2015 at the Los Angles Memorial Coliseum. Arriving from all corners of the world, 7,000 athletes competing in 25 sporting events, will take the global stage in Los Angeles and show the world incredible courage, unwavering determination, and sheer joy. By living out their dreams in front of the world, they will open hearts and minds, and expand our collective sense of acceptance and inclusion.

WHAT IS THE HOST TOWN PROGRAM? The Host Town Program is a very special three-day program that takes place prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. At their Host Towns, athletic delegations from around the world will be welcomed and celebrated. The Host Town’s schedule of events will include getting to know the community members, taking part in cultural activities unique to their area, and—of course—practicing and resting for the games. The Special Olympics athletes will feel truly celebrated and Host Town members will make friends for life.

WHEN ARE THE HOST TOWNS? Delegations arrive at the Host Towns on July 21 and will depart on July 24, 2015

LA HABRA, A HOST TOWN! On November 3, 2014, it was announced that we’ve become an official Host Town of the World Games. We are proud to take part in the largest humanitarian and athletic event Los Angeles has seen since the 1984 Olympics. We look forward to hosting an international delegation for three days in our community. The bond created between the athletes and our community members will be life changing and it will promote acceptance and inclusion of intellectual disabilities throughout our community.

HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT THE HOST TOWN? Donations can be made at http://www.la2015.org/host-town/list/ (click on "La Habra ” to make your donation) or by checks payable to “LA2015” and not directly to La Habra. Please send it to Laura Leventhal, 2015 Special Olympics World Games, 633 W. 5th Street, Suite 2000, Los Angeles, CA 90071, USA. Help us in making La Habra an amazing Host Town experience for the athletes! It takes $100 to host one athlete during one day of in our town (including lodging and food) or $300 for all three days. Your generous support will unite our community in welcoming our international delegates. The world is coming, are you?

The City will be hosting delegations from three countries — Lithuania, Myanmar and Norway. Lithuania is a northern European country on the Baltic Sea bordered by Latvia, Belarus Poland and Kalininblad Oblast, with a population of 2,921,920. Rebellious, quirky and vibrant, the country is known for its majestic Baltic coastline and the unique sliver of white sand known as the Curonian Spit, lush pine forests and lakes, and coastal wetlands that lure thousands of migrating birds. Lithuania’s 13 athletes will participate in aquatics, athletics, bocce ball (lawn bowling), power lifting and table tennis. Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand, with a population of 51,419,420. The country is rich in jade and gems, oil, natural gas and other mineral resources. It is known for its unspoiled beaches, many beautiful temples, pristine lakes and tropical forests. Myanmar’s ten athletes will participate in athletic activities and bocce ball. Norway is a northern European country that borders Sweden, Finland, Russia, the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea, with a population of 5,109,059 people. The country’s fjords present some of the most visually impressive coastal sceneries in the world. In addition, Norway’s wildlife includes 30 species of seabirds, seals, reindeer, Arctic fox and a few thousand polar bears – and that’s just on one of its islands.

Norway’s 25 athletes will participate in aquatics, track & field, golf, artistic gymnastics, judo and kayaking. The City has planned many activities for the delegates to enjoy our Southern California culture and lifestyle. These include a welcome dinner and celebration at Cal State Fullerton, a visit to Downtown Disney with a Character Breakfast, an Angel’s game with a tailgate dinner, a day at the Orange County Fair, and tours of the City’s police department, fire stations and more. On April 7th, the City held a Kick-Off Rally to get the ball rolling, but volunteers and sponsorships are still needed for all of these activities. To quote the Special Olympics International, by becoming involved, “…you are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place – one athlete, one volunteer, one family member at a time.” For more information on sponsorship and volunteer activities in the Special Olympics Host Town Program, please contact Karlee Marshall at 562-383-4211 or kmarshall@ lahabraca.gov.

Celebrating Success & What’s New in La Habra City Welcomes New Community & Economic Development Director The City of La Habra is very happy to announce that they have hired a new Community Development Director. Andrew Ho was hired as the City’s Director of Community & Economic Development in March 2015. Previously, Mr. Ho worked in the communities of Bellflower, Malibu and Sierra Madre. He has an undergraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Cal Poly Pomona and a graduate degree from C.S.U. Long Beach. Mr. Ho has experience in city planning, code enforcement and economic development, as well as focused experience in downtown revitalization, business attraction and retention, and building relationships.

Police Department Goes Live The La Habra Police Department has become more “social’, by increasing its social media presence on Twitter, (@ LaHabraPD), Facebook, (La Habra Police Department), and through the creation of its own smart phone app, LHPD Connect, which is available for iOS and Android devices. “The new La Habra phone application can be a great resource for La Habra residents and business owners,” said Police Chief Jerry Price. “It’s another way for residents to access real-time crime alerts, news information and crime prevention tips, as well as communicate with their police department.”

New Fitness Equipment Installed The City of La Habra installed new outdoor fitness equipment for community use at Montwood Park, 231 E. Montwood Ave. The La Habra Family Resource Center, the La Habra Action Council and Southern California University of Health Sciences worked with the City to select a 12-unit system that focuses on upper and lower body strength conditioning, as well as cardio work. provided by a three-part grant from St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton. Another set of similar equipment will be installed at a second La Habra park; however, the location has not been determined yet. For more information, please visit www.lahabraca.gov or the La Habra Recreation Division’s Facebook page or call 562-383-4200.

Family Circus Visit a Success As part of 2015’s line-up of new family events, the La Habra Community Services Department brought American Crown Circus: Circo Osorio USA to the Market Place shopping Center April 9th through 13th. The 17-year-old Las Vegasbased, family-owned circus is a one-stage traveling operation with high-wire acts, acrobats, magicians and clowns that owner Roberto Osorio describes as “a Las Vegas-style production that is a cross between Cirque de Soleil and the more traditional traveling circuses.” In addition to providing a fun activity for family members of all ages, a percentage of ticket sales will be used to support La Habra recreation and community programs.

Spring Family Eggstravaganza: Bigger & Better Than Ever This year’s Spring Family Eggstravaganza was again held at its new location, La Bonita Park. The event was moved in 2014 because attendance had outgrown its original location at El Centro-Lions Park, and this year’s crowd was substantially larger than last year’s. The helicopter egg drop was a major draw, as was the inclusion of more vendors. As always, the La Habra Family Resource Center Community Resource Fair was part of the event, giving families the opportunity to learn more about County and local health and social services. City recreation class instructors were also on hand to raise awareness about the many classes the Community Services Department offers. For a full list of recreation classes, please see pages 23-41. 

City Welcomes Fire Service Day

Flag Retirement Ceremony Scheduled The United States Flag Code outlines proper flag etiquette for everything from properly folding a flag to flying a flag correctly. It also says that when an American flag becomes worn, faded, torn or soiled, it should be retired and replaced with a new flag. There are several ways to respectfully dispose of the American flag. The most common method is burning the torn or tattered flag in a special ceremony.

On Saturday, May 30th, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, the Los Angeles County Fire Department will bring an assortment of firefighting equipment and conduct fire safety and emergency demonstrations at the La Habra Community Center, 101 W. La Habra Blvd. This is an annual event, but the first time it has been held in Orange County. In addition to seeing equipment firsthand, visitors to the event will also have an opportunity to speak to firefighters about fire safety, water rescue and earthquake preparedness. There will also be music, activities for the kids and HB Greenscreen photos with firefighting background. For more information, please visit www.lahabraca. gov or the La Habra Recreation Division’s Facebook page, or call 562-383-4200.

On Saturday, June 13th, the City, in conjunction with American Legion Post 267, La Habra; Boys Scout Troop & Crew 871; and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, will hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony at El Centro-Lions Park, 320 E. Erna Ave., from 9:00 to 10:00 am. All are invited to attend. For more information, please visit www.lahabraca.gov or call 562-383-4200.

Help Beat the Drought with Aquaponics Long gone are the days of digging holes and amending soil, then remembering to water grow beds or pots of vegetables and fruits to keep them hydrated. Instead, these traditional methods of farming are being replaced by highly sustainable grow towers, requiring minimal water and very little maintenance. This innovative form of farming, called hydroponics or aquaponics, requires only 10-15% of the water consumption normally required for farming, and it couldn’t come at a more opportune time than now, when California is suffering one of the worst water shortages in its history and the scorching heat of summer is quickly approaching. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants in a soil-less environment, with water pumping through the system much like a water fountain. Aquaponics, a technique that dates back centuries, merges hydroponics with the addition of raising fish, usually for the purpose of consumption as protein. The key to aquaponics lies in the water that the plants and fish share. The fish supply nutrients that feed the plants, and the plants clean the water so the fish can live in it. Additionally, studies show that produce harvested from hydroponics and aquaponics farms has a high nutritional content, much greater than what can be purchased in a store.

Non-root vegetables, like tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce, can thrive in an aquaponics system, while edible fish, like tilapia, can be raised to be eaten in the same setup. Another advantage is that this method of gardening does not require good soil or much space. In the fall of 2014, as part of the Move More, Eat Healthy Campaign, Living Justly Industries, Inc., a local La Habra nonprofit organization, partnered with the City and a few local churches to implement community gardens that could be used to grow and provide healthy, organic produce to local families, with a significant portion being given to families and individuals in need. Today, Crossroads Community and Vineyard North Orange County Churches house two of the most mature community garden sites that are comprised of hydroponics towers that are designed to be used as aquaponics systems, if and when the decision is made to add fish. For more information about hydroponic or aquaponic gardening, contact Living Justly Industries’ at 562-6974600 or visit www.livingjustlyindustries.org.

January 24, 2016 LA HABRA’S DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT OF THE QUARTER:

Westridge Golf Club 1400 S. La Habra Hills Dr., La Habra

Chaste Tree The Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is a highly drought tolerant perennial that is native to the regions of southern Europe and central Asia. It can be grown as a small multitrunk tree or large shrub in partial shade to full sun and grows to a maximum height of about 20 feet. The tree is deciduous in most climates, but is grown as an evergreen in southern regions. Apply compost and water regularly during the first growing season to establish the tree’s root system. Once established, it can thrive in full sun exposure and is very drought tolerant in clay, loam or sandy soil. The tree is perhaps best known for producing long fragrant blue, lilac or violet flowers in twelve-to-eighteen inch panicles which attract various wildlife, including hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. The flowers are produced in multiple cycles during the summer months from June through September and can be used in floral arrangements. The grey-green, glossy leaves are also aromatic and disease-free. For more information or guidance on suitable plants and trees, please contact the Public Works Department at 562-383-4170 or explore the resources listed: 1. 1. 1. 1. 1.

Always MILLION DOLLAR Service We worked with Ray in two separate transactions. In the first, we bought a house from a seller he represented. He was fantastic...easy to get along with, went out of his way to make the process as easy as possible. Our experience was so positive, that we hired him when it was time to sell as well. The house was shown several times and went into escrow very quickly. I highly recommend Ray and his team. Gina Carroll

New Summer Concerts Added at Marketplace The City of La Habra is partnering with the La Habra Marketplace to host two new concerts. On Thursday, June 18th, enjoy the sounds of the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones review. This two-band musical tribute act plays classic tunes from the boys of Liverpool and the lads from London, letting the evening’s audience decide who’s more popular. On Thursday, June 25th, La Habra welcomes back Thee Midniters. This classic group had several memorable hits with Whittier Boulevard, Land of a 1,000 Dances, and That’s All, to name a few. Five Simple Steps to Managing Your Business Credit 1.

Determine whether or not you already have a business credit file. Small business owners should first know if they have a business credit file with D&B. You can find this out by calling D&B Customer Service at 1-866-785-0430 or visiting iupdate.dnb.com/ iUpdate/mainlaunchpage.htm. If you don’t have a business credit file, establish one by applying for a D-U-N-S® number. Small businesses should apply for a D-U-N-S® number, a unique business identification number, as soon as they start their enterprise to start the process of creating a business credit file. If, when you call or visit the D&B web site, you determine that you already have a business credit file, review it completely to understand what information it contains. Add or modify the information as necessary to ensure that those looking at your business credit (such as vendors, suppliers and financial institutions) are making decisions based on complete and accurate information.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Establish a business credit history. When they are starting up, many small businesses use their personal credit and finances to get their business going. But they should establish a credit history by putting expenses (such as a business phone line) in their business name and using a commercial bank account to pay their bills. Pay bills on time – and understand other factors that influence your credit rating. In order to improve your commercial credit scores and build a positive payment history, the most important thing to do is pay your bills on time. Be very careful not to overextend your business, and use any line of credit judiciously. While payment behavior is important, credit ratings are based on multiple factors. D&B, for example, maintains 150 factors that go into a credit rating, such as industry, revenues and number of employees. Monitor your business credit file and keep it up to date. According to D&B, the credit score of about one in three businesses declines over just a three-month period. By monitoring your business credit file, you will be aware of any change in your ratings before it affects your relationships with customers, suppliers and financial institutions. You should keep your credit file current and accurate, reflecting changes such as location, number of employees, outstanding suits/liens and revenue — all of which impact your credit rating Monitor your customers’ and vendors’ credit. Monitoring credit reports that provide a clear and complete picture of the credit standing of your customers can help you to determine how much credit, and on what terms, you should extend.

Instructor Profiles Nancy O’Brien Instructor Nancy O’Brien grew up in Pico Rivera and studied dance and ballet for much of her life. In 1985, she began studying Tai Chi. A series of meditative and self-healing movements based on Chinese teaching over 6,000 years old, Tai Chi literally translate to “The Grand Ultimate Way of Life” as taught through movement. Because of her dance background, Nancy was used to breaking down movements into components, and this was helpful to her in mastering the different stances in Tai Chi, as well for assisting those in her classes who were struggling with the different poses. Over the years, her instructors encouraged her to learn more extensive forms, as well as to teach classes herself. We are lucky that she followed the latter advice! Any form of Tai Chi offers many benefits, says O’Brien. First, it is a low impact, slow burning exercise, so it’s gentle on the joints when done correctly. And because weight changes are such an important part of the process, it improves balance tremendously. It also increases the participant’s self-awareness, which can have a positive effect on one’s personal safety. “The best self-defense is leaving a situation before it happens,” she points out. “To know how to avoid circumstances makes one feel powerful.” Last, there are so many levels that one never stops learning. O’Brien doesn’t just teach Tai Chi; she also competes and judges Tai Chi contests at the international level, traveling to China every few years, as well as attending competitions in the U.S. She has won many trophies and medals, some of which are on display in the Community Center lobby. Tai Chi Chuan meets on Saturday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, and Tai Chi LiuHeBaFa, a more complicated form, meets on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm. Both classes take place at the Community Center and accept new students at any level, in any session. See pg. 39 for more details.

Karon Thomas Karon Thomas is a woman of many roles. She has worked as an instructional aide for special education classes, served as president of the La Habra Art Association, taught art classes, and worked as a counselor at the Gary Center, all of which stem from her lifelong urge to help people. Her role as an instructor for the City of La Habra has been just as varied. In 1974, she began her career with the City as a belly dance instructor at the Community Center. Class attendance was about 35 students ranging in age from 12 to 72. At one point, she added up the number of years she’d taught, the number of classes she’d taught, and she realized that she probably taught 3,000 to 5,000 women to dance. During this same time, Thomas was also teaching an exercise class at the local Methodist church, an easy movement exercise class at the Fullerton YWCA, and art classes at local Montessori schools. IN 2005, she retired from teaching belly dance at the Community Center so she and her husband could relocate to Arizona. Instead, the couple found themselves faced with a variety of unexpected challenges, and they stayed in La Habra. Thomas returned to the Community Center in 2009 with a new class, Time Out for You, which she taught through 2014. It included techniques that had worked for her over the years that she believed would help others to make their lives as full and meaningful as possible. Thomas believes that exercise can release negative energy from the body. With this tenet in mind, she has returned to the Community Center to offer her Easy Movement class, which she has been teaching elsewhere for over 13 years. The class includes easy moves that start with the head and neck and work all the way down to the toes. She combines moves from modern dance, ballet, jazz, Tai Chi walking, yoga, ChiGiong and aerobics for a thorough workout. We are so glad she’s come back! Easy Movement meets on Tuesday, 4:30-5:30 pm at the Community Center. See pg. 34 for more details.

Enjoy a unique opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes tour of Vandenberg

Air Force Base, among the nation’s most important military and aerospace installations. This base coordinates the training and testing of crews responsible for our nation’s missile defense and tracking system and manages space and missile testing. It is the only launch site for both commercial and military satellites on the West Coast and for those going into polar orbit. Located just north of Santa Barbara near Lompoc and surrounded by the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vandenberg lies in a beautiful, secluded location on California’s Central Coast. On this docentguided driving tour, we’ll see some of Vandenberg’s launch complexes and other places of interest. We will visit the Space & Missile Heritage Center, which displays artifacts and memorabilia related to the evolution of missile and space lift activity from the beginning of the Cold War through current non-classified developments in military, commercial, and scientific space endeavors. Learn about the history of the base, normal day-to-day operations, and what takes place on the base leading up to launches. You’ll also enjoy an included lunch on the base at the Officer’s Club. Note that because this is an active base, the Air Force has the right to change or cancel any part of the tour without notice. Note that a roster of names must be submitted by September 7th, and no additions or changes may be made after that deadline. Required: when booking, provide full legal name as it appears on your driver’s license or other government-issued identification that you will be presenting to Base Security on the day of the tour, along with your driver’s license number (or social security number), date of birth and whether you are a U.S. citizen.
