Welcome to Seaton Year round home of outdoor adventure
Whether you are visiting our seaside town or already living here, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in Seaton. This year we are delighted to see the opening of several new attractions in Seaton. Our newest, Seaton Jurassic, opened its doors for the first time in spring with a promise to transport visitors through time to witness the birth of our planet, the origins of life on Earth and to experience how the landscapes and life of today’s Jurassic Coast have come to be. We are also extremely proud to have just opened our fantastic new Jurassic themed Adventure Play Park at the Underfleet. Voted for by local school children and a joint project between Seaton Town Council and East Devon District Council, its 30-foot zip wire, bat tunnels, cretaceous zone rocks, Jurassic zone Viper ropes and Dinosaur nests are a must see. Seaton is the home of outdoor adventure and we have recently installed a brand new orienteering course (see p10), a
timeline in Cliff Field Gardens (see p9) and over the summer a new adventure golf course and a new gym will be opening. This year we are also hosting our first British Cycling supported Seaton Cycle Festival featuring a town centre criterium race.
Contents Outdoor Adventure...... 10 An astonishing wealth of opportunities, pursuits and terrain to explore

You can read more about all of these, in addition to a wealth of other information, on our new town website www.seatondevon.org which was launched recently. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy browsing through our 2016 Town Guide.

Natural Seaton
Whether you love walking, running or cycling along trails, canoeing and sailing on estuary or sea, fishing from the beach or rock-pooling – if you love nature, you’ll love Seaton! Seaton sits in a stunning geographical location. Its hugely diverse natural environment includes the Seaton Wetlands (reported to be the best place in the country to spot wildlife by Which? Travel Magazine in 2013); 304 hectares of National Nature Reserve; and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a landscape recognised as one of the most fabulous places in England. and landscape have achieved national and international acclaim, with World Heritage Site status, three European Special Areas of Conservation and numerous local wildlife designations. Off Seaton’s coast, the Lyme Bay Reefs provide a safe haven for marine life. The crystal clear rock pools and reefs at Seaton Hole offer tantalising clues to the undersea wonders offshore. The wilderness that is Lyme Bay is set to become one of our most important newly designated marine nature reserves.

Seaton’s newest attraction, Seaton Jurassic, has arrived. Visit and you’ll witness the birth of our planet, the origins of life on Earth and experience how the landscapes and life of today’s Jurassic Coast have come to be. The centre transports you from Victorian times when Seaton and surrounding coastal communities were a place for fossil-hunters, geologists and evolutionists who were uncovering the secrets hidden in Jurassic Coast rocks - through to the Jurassic world of 250-150 million years ago where you`ll come face to face with huge marine dinosaurs. Survive that, and Seaton Jurassic has more in store. You can visit the giant rockpool where you’ll have to adapt to survive, or enjoy the tranquil wildlife gardens that combine water play with a space to stop, look and link yourself with stories from the local landscape. There’s also a great café, a gift shop and full accessibility, along with all the other things you’d want from a top attraction.

Seaton is a great place to unwind, relax and get out and about in the great outdoors. See www.seatondevon.org/attractions-and-hotspots/ Children will love our fantastic new Jurassic themed Adventure Play Park voted for by local schools and recently installed next to the town’s skate park, Seaton Tramway and Seaton Jurassic. Zip down a 30-foot zip wire, explore the bat tunnels and scale the rocks at the cretaceous zone or swing through Viper ropes and climb the Dinosaur nest in the Jurassic zone. The town’s iconic Victorian Clock Tower can be seen in Seafield Gardens. This lovely park overlooks the beach and is home to the town’s outdoor gym equipment, bowling green, tennis courts, children’s play area, two hot houses, and a picturesque lily pond. A brand new Jurassic adventure golf course is being installed complete with dino egg sculptures and dinosaur fossils to navigate around. The park leads to Jubilee Gardens where you can enjoy sitting in the amphitheater and taking in the beautiful sea views.
Up the footpath to Castle Hill you’ll find Cliff Field Gardens, where you’ll discover Seaton Labyrinth constructed to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the town. Its 11 circuits and 60 foot diameter reveal 185 million years of evolution. Running alongside the park in the Gardens is our new Geological Timeline which was created by Seaton Town Council with additional funding from Devon County Council and Fields in Trust. The Timeline tells the story of the Earth, beginning with the formation of our planet 4600 million years ago, and using time intervals to describe key events in the evolution of life from its earliest stages to the emergence of humans. Cliff Field Gardens also leads to the home of Britain’s longest and most popular National Trail, The South West Coast Path. www.southwestcoastpath.com
