Notes From the Pastor’s Desk

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is important to read today's Gospel and next week's Gospel as two parts of a single story. These readings are a turning point in Matthew's Gospel. This week we hear Jesus name Simon Peter as the rock upon which he will build his Church. Next week we will hear Jesus call this same Simon Peter "Satan" when he reacts negatively to Jesus' prediction about his passion and death. In today's Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples what people are saying about his identity. The disciples indicate that most people believe that Jesus is a prophet of Israel. Then Jesus asks his disciples who they believe that he is. Simon Peter answers, identifying Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus commends Simon Peter for this profession of faith, indicating that this insight has come from God. Because of Simon Peter's response, Jesus calls him the "rock" upon which Jesus will build the Church. This is a word play on the name Peter, which is the Greek word for "rock." Peter is then given special authority by Jesus, a symbolic key to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter will play an important role in the early Christian community as a spokesperson and a leader. In today's Gospel, Peter's recognition of Jesus' identity is credited to a revelation by God. This will contrast sharply with Jesus' rebuke of Peter in next week's Gospel. When Peter rejects Jesus' prediction of his passion and death, Peter is said to no longer be thinking as God does but as humans do. The use of the term church in today's Gospel is one of only three such occurrences in Matthew's Gospel. Peter in this Gospel is being credited as the foundation for the Church, a privilege granted to him because of his recognition of Jesus' identity. The Church continues to be grounded in the faith that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Fr. Matthew

P. Matteo

21º Domingo do Tempo Comum

ONE PAIR OF HANDS One pair of hands formed the mountains. One pair of hands formed the sea, and one pair of hands made the sun and the moon, every bird, every flower, every tree. One pair of hands formed the valleys, the oceans, the rivers, the sand. Those hands are so strong, so when life goes wrong, put your faith in the one pair of hands. One pair of hands healed the sick. One pair of hands raised the dead. One pair of hands calmed the raging storm, and thousands of people were fed. One pair of hands said I love you, and those hands were nailed to a tree. Those hands are so strong, so when life goes wrong, put your faith in the one pair of hands.

St. Rose of Lima, Virgin born Lima, Peru April 20, 1586 died August 24, 1617 St. Rose of Lima is the patroness of Peru, Latin America and the Philippines. This Saint's real name was Isabel, but she was such a beautiful baby that she was called Rose, and that name remained. As she grew older, she became more and more beautiful, and one day, her mother put a wreath of flowers on her head to show off her loveliness to friends. But Rose had no desire to be admired, for her heart had been given to Jesus. So she put a long pin into that wreath and it pierced her so deeply, that she had a hard time getting the wreath off afterward. Another time she became afraid that her beauty might be a temptation to someone, since people could not take their eyes off her. Therefore, she rubbed her face with pepper until it was all red and blistered. St. Rose worked hard to support her poor parents and she humbly obeyed them, except when they tried to get her to marry. That she would not do. Her love of Jesus was so great that when she talked about Him, her face glowed and her eyes sparkled. Rose had many temptations from the devil, and there were also many times when she had to suffer a feeling of terrible loneliness and sadness, for God seemed far away. Yet she cheerfully offered all these troubles to Him. In fact, in her last long, painful sickness, this heroic young woman use to pray: "Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase Your love in my heart." Many miracles followed her death. She was beatified by Clement IX, in 1667, and canonized in 1671 by Clement X, the first American to be so honored. Her feast is celebrated 23 of August. She is represented wearing a crown of roses.

VOCATION AWARENESS We are slow to believe and trust in God. Yet we are quick to believe what is published in the newspapers, on the TV and the internet. This hasn’t changed for over 2000 years. Those who heard Jesus speak and saw His miracles first-hand still questioned His authority. They couldn’t see beyond what they knew. They trusted their physical senses, but were not willing to allow their sense of faith to take over. We do the same today, don’t we? We want proof that God exists, even with the evidence of God all around us. The beauty of nature speaks to the majesty of God. The intricacies of the human person points to the Divine Creator. The fulfilled prophesies of the bible point us to Jesus, who walked our walk, and talked our talk, died our death and was raised on the third day. Yet, do we believe? Do we ask for an increase in faith, hope and trust? Do we study Scripture and other spiritual writings so as to see the power, majesty and faithfulness of God? Do we believe in the Lord’s presence in the Eucharist when our eyes tell us it is only bread and wine? Lord, we are slow to believe. Increase our faith in you. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may see you all around us. You told us, “Blessed are those who don’t see, yet believe.” The purpose of the Serra Club of Broward County is to foster and promote vocations to the priesthood by supporting our Seminarians through prayer and financial support for our Seminaries.
