St Patrick’s College News CATHOLIC CO-EDUCATION YEARS 7-12

Thursday 8th September 2016 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Patrick’s College,

MISSION IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE In only a few hours time (at the time of writing this article) I will be joining several staff, three parents and College Board members and eight students at our Mission Implementation Committee Meeting. In essence the role of this unique gathering is to ensure that our College Mission Statement is more than just words. That it is being lived … words put into action. Tonight we will farewell our Year 11 students: Noh Hintsa (MacKillop), Jessica Leeflang (Nagle), Oliver Nicholson (Rice), Montana Chugg (Tenison) and welcome our Year 9s: Jacob Barns (MacKillop), Sasha Massey (Nagle), Liam Hollingsworth (Rice) Chelsea Pinkard (Tenison). We thank Montana, Jessica, Noh and Oliver for their mature input and commitment over the past two years. One of our regular agenda items is listing examples of where we have seen our mission in action recently and what value(s) it is linked to. I’ll be raising LAP IT UP, at tonight’s meeting, as a great example of all of our values being lived out by students, staff and parents.

LAP IT UP IX 2016 The considerable preparation and organisation required for LAP IT UP starts in earnest in the middle of Term 2. House Captains encourage many other Year 12s to join them on the four organising committees. The staff on each committee are only there as guides and mentors, as the students get to experience the highs and lows of putting on an event of this magnitude. Special thanks to Mr Adrian Viney for helping to set up the committees this year while I was enjoying long service leave. At 9am last Thursday morning (1st September) the first strokes, pedals and steps were taken for what is now a much looked forward to Year 12 tradition. Special Features of LAP IT UP IX • Spring made its most welcome presence felt, as mild temperatures and light winds made for our smoothest conditions for many years. • For the second year in a row nesting plovers presented a challenge for the course designers! We were able to adapt the ride slightly and mother and eggs remained untouched. • A record number of hourly donations were sourced - 38 in total, with many businesses paying beyond the $100 requested to sponsor one of the hours. • More students than usual formed teams of six, eight and even up to 14, to cover each of the 24 hours - even setting up sleep headquarters in the rumpus room of the nearest student’s home. • Heavy conditions in a couple of sections of the oval perimeter tested the thighs of cyclists and the calves of runners. Everybody Hour 2

If the other 23 hours are more about legs, shoulders and wagging tongues, this hour (from 7.00-8.00pm on Thursday evening) is really the heart-beat of LAP IT UP. Key members of this night’s organising committee, India Graham and Liam Ryan, welcomed their peers, parents, staff and guests to the Nagle Gym. We heard from Mr Adrian Viney, Mr Simon Cobiac and Br Sean McManus about ‘their Africa’, the difference this money would make and how proud they were of the generosity of spirit of the Year 12s. An interim total was announced, amongst individual acknowledgements and lots of lucky door prizes.

Money Raised At this stage we do not have a final figure for LAP IT UP IX, as we await a couple of invoices and are still to collect money from a small number of students. On the night over $24,000 was pledged, so the 2016 Year 12s have not given up hope of eclipsing the 2015 record of $25,328. Once again this is an incredible effort from our Year 12s and the St Patrick’s Community. The evolution of money raised in LAP IT UP, over the past 9 years, makes interesting reading: Year 2008 2009 2010 2011

$ 5,075 8,315 8,681 18,408

Year 2012 2013 2014 2015

$ 24,700 20,098 24,816 25,328

With the 2016 amount this should push the total raised to over $160,000. Raising awareness of the plight of many less fortunate than ourselves is priceless. But so too, this injection of funds – funds with no administrative skimming – makes a huge difference in the lives of individuals and the sense of hope in a community. 40% of the money will go to support the following locally based House charities: MacKillop: Nagle:

SPC 64 defeated SBSC 17

by Miss Gemma O’Halloran

Well done to the entire team, what an amazing effort by the girls with a well fought battle against Queechy resulting in a fantastic 3-2 win. They now play off in the GRAND FINAL this Friday night against Launceston City which will be a hard battle. Both teams are evenly matched and this should result in a great game. Both are determined and will be out to prove they deserve the top honours.

Best Players: Piper Sanders, Ally Wrigley, Madison Burr In our travel away game against SBSC, the Senior Firsts dominated from the first whistle. Full of energy after a bus trip, the girls were out to a strong 20 point lead at quarter time. In the second, third and fourth quarters, all girls played out of position and were still able to extend the lead significantly. Piper Sanders moved into goals and scored a miraculous goal on the line and Charlotte Oliver and Tori Milbourne were unstoppable as the shortest defenders on the court. A great game with lots of laughs!

Senior Seconds SPC 58 defeated SBSC 11

Queechy scored first as we started slightly flat footed and didn’t hit our normal playing pace and skill until the 15 minute mark of the first half. Georgia Elias scored our first goal and this made the girls step up and show they were out to win. Caitlin French, Charlotte Grant and Fenella Harris worked extremely hard to create many opportunities to score but the half concluded with 1-1. With a motivating pep talk from Markus and words of encouragement from myself and Mr Towns the girls went into the second half strong willed and tenacious. Matilda McClintock, well positioned in the circle, managed to get her stick on a well

COME ALONG AND SUPPORT THE GIRLS!

hit ball from Caitlin French and put a goal on the board but Queechy replied with a run through our defence to even the scores once again. A draw would still see us into the final but the girls continued to drive the ball forward and with a powerful slap hit from the top of the circle Charlotte Grant scored with minutes left on the clock. Queechy didn’t give up and the ball managed to get into their circle two more times and with strength Amy Dawber, Yhollanda Bart and goalie Piper Heerey kept them from scoring. Taylah Barrett ran hard all game and Mia Clark held her ground in defence to assist the forwards on many occasions. Please support the girls this Friday as they would like a good cheer squad to encourage them all. Congratulations to Caitlin French for receiving the NCC U/16 competition highest goal scorer, her efforts this season have been inspiring and she has represented St Patrick’s proudly and along with many of her team mates, has played an important role in getting this team into the GRAND FINAL. Good luck girls!
