Teaching with Authority Doesn’t Mean Having All the Answers This may be my longest title to any column that I have ever written for this, or any other bulletin. The phrase “teaching with authority” comes up many times throughout the Synoptic Gospels. It is usually spoken by ordinary people who are comparing Jesus to the religious leaders of their times. In the end, as Christians, it is something we should want people to say about us. Once again it is Catholic Schools Week and I cannot help but reflect on our own Academy, as well as the Catholic high schools and universities that many of the young people of our parish attend. I am struck by the vocation of teaching in these various environments. As much as academic excellence is a priority for our schools, all the more is to have a Catholic, Christian identity. It’s all about “teaching with authority”. For all parents, grandparents and anyone else who helps to form young lives, it is about “teaching with authority”. It is a mantra for all Christians in our dealings with all people, fellow Christians and beyond. Jesus is asking us, as always, to mirror Him. Ultimately, it is about walking the walk. Many rabbis in the time of Jesus knew the Torah backward and forward. Yet, this rabbi was different because He lived the Torah. We can memorize Commandments, Beatitudes, Bible verses and Church teachings and follow all the rituals and practices and still be far from the Kingdom of God. Jesus was what He taught. He calls us to be people who live their beliefs and values that come right from the mouth of Jesus in the Gospels. There are so many positive descriptions of Jesus Christ, the man who walked this earth. In the end, the word I like best is integrity. The day and age in which we live, with fake news and people saying anything to get ahead, don’t we value truth and sincerity more than ever? That is the authority that Jesus taught with and the authority we should exercise in living the Christian life. Soon we will be entering Lent, and we will have all kinds of opportunities for things we can do with others, as well as carving out our own personal Lenten journey. Stay tuned, get involved and do things that will help further your identity as a believer. Then, hopefully, people can say about us we “taught with authority”, that is, we live what we believe.

“Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do for me…”

St. Catharine’s Reach-Out Ministry

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 28, 2018

Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.

- Psalm 95:6

Today’s Readings

First Reading Moses spoke to all the people, saying: "A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you”. (Deuteronomy 18:15-20) Psalm If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Psalm 95) Second Reading Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. (1 Corinthians 7:32-35) Gospel The people were astonished at Jesus' teaching. (Mark 1:21-28) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. God's very words filling our mouths.

Faith-Based Environment with a Strong Academic Curriculum

Academy of Our Lady www.academyofourlady.org

Open Houses: Sunday, Jan. 28th 11AM - 1PM Wednesday, Jan. 31st 9AM - 11AM Be Our Guest by Katharine Clemente, 4th Grade Teacher

Once again the title of this article shamelessly references our Spring musical, Beauty and the Beast Jr. and I encourage everyone to join us the first weekend of May for our theatrical presentation, but please read this first! Last year’s piece focused on the feeling of nostalgia and family that I have experienced since returning to work at Academy of Our Lady and how wonderful I think our school is, and has always been. I assured readers that our faculty, staff, and students felt the same. Well, Readers, come see for yourselves! Whether you are searching for a school for your child or grandchild, or are simply interested in seeing early faith formation at its finest, attend one of our Open Houses this week. Whether it is in the use of the STEM Design Process by our first grade students, the preparation for First Communion, the pairing of older and younger students as Prayer Partners, the show of good sportsmanship, and our various school-wide philanthropic works, our students are spreading the Good News by simply being the best they can be. They are our best ambassadors for Catholic education and they are our best hope for the future of the Catholic Church. Choosing Catholic schools makes a difference. Starting the day with a prayer makes a difference. It makes a difference in my day, and it makes a difference in students’ days too. And we hope it continues to make a difference in their lives. As a Catholic School, we are uniquely armed with the tools to not only develop academic knowledge, but also students’ character and catechism. Having faith in God comes to mean more than just going to church. It means showing kindness, having empathy, and standing up for what is right. I derive great satisfaction from witnessing them learn in the classroom, but nothing quite matches the pride I feel when they pray together, sing hymns together, or most importantly when they live their faith by being kind to one another. So not only as an educator, but as a fellow member of the Catholic Church, I invite you to be our guest, and come see the difference for yourself.

Sharing the Gift of Treasure “Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.”

- 1 Corinthians 7:32

How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future.
