It is a process like walking, not done “immediately”, but in small steps. Parenting demands patient encouragement. SUNDAY MISSSALS Sunday Missals for 2017 have arrived! The Missals contain the prayers and readings for Sundays and holy days and are available for purchase in the Gift Shop for $5. Perpetual Sunday and daily missals are also available. UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM The Catholic Church is not asking for special treatment when it comes to the federal healthcare mandate, she is simply asking that every American’s right to religious freedom be protected. This right is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday, or to pray the rosary at home. It is about adhering to the tenets of our faith, so that we can contribute to the common good of all Americans. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the federal health care mandate by calling U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445, and your elected representatives. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE PASTOR’S NOTE

Brothers and Sisters, I am truly grateful to Fr. Chris for having allowed me to fill in for him while he was away. I cannot begin to say how satisfying it is, knowing that I am able to help one of my brothers in fraternity. The bonus is that I was able to be among you again, even for a short time. Fr. Chris asked me to write something for the bulletin this weekend, so naturally I have turned to prayer (can’t do anything without God’s help), and the Scriptures chosen by Holy Mother Church for this weekend. I confess that I also checked out two commentaries because the mind is not now as pliable as it used to be. Last week we heard in the First Reading (Old Testament) from the prophet Isaiah, calling Israel to be light to the nations. This week we are told that the source of this Light emanates from the district of Galilee. This Light brings joy and freedom to those who recognize that they’ve been living in oppressive darkness. Of course the Holy Gospel according to Matthew picks up this theme so beautifully reminding us that Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s words—Jesus is the Light Who sets us free and fills us with joy. But the Gospel also tells us of Jesus doing “vocation work”. He begins calling men to a special community; to be the first Pope and Bishops of the Church. The quality of this vocation is that these men come to live with Christ in obedience to His teachings, AND, that they learn to live united to each other as brothers – fraternity. As if St. Paul knew that a portion of his Letter to the Corinthians was going to be used by the Church all these centuries later, we hear that life in this community called the Church be characterized by unity in charity. Isn’t that what he means when he tells the Corinthians (and us) to be united in the same mind and in the same purpose? In spite of our differing opinions, Unity In Charity remains the hallmark of the Church (and the Franciscan Order). Has this been lived out perfectly down through the centuries? Of course not. But it doesn’t make it less true. And many men and women have taken the call of Jesus seriously, especially to walk more closely with Him in priesthood, and religious life. Brothers and Sisters, God has allowed me to be in a position where other priests were able to come and help me, so I could come and help Fr. Chris. Our vocation in general is to do all we can to help—not hinder—one another. May God give us the wisdom and courage to walkthe-walk with Jesus continuing to be instruments spreading HIS LIGHT. And, of course, may many men and women say YES to the Lord’s call to Franciscan Fraternity. I pray the Lord fills you all with peace… Fr. Bruce, OFM PARISH GIFT SHOP The Parish Gift Shop is open on Saturdays from 2:30 to 5pm, and Sundays from 9 to 11:45am and 5:30 to 6pm.

JANUARY 22, 2017 VOCATIONS The Lord Jesus proclaimed that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. We need, in our own time, to proclaim that same message. Are we bold enough to reform our lives and proclaim the Good News? If you are, call Fr. Ron, Fr. Conrad, or Fr. Pierre, Franciscan Vocation Team, 1617-248-8821 or Fr. Jeffrey Gubbiotti, Archdiocesan Vocations Director, 860-242-5573.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES FAMILY SERVICE CENTER How do you deal with stress and decision making? Are you looking for support to manage anger? Why do you use drugs? Are you overwhelmed with parenting? We offer help so you can improve your skills to deal with daily challenges. Visit our office at 132 Grove St. in Torrington or call us at 860-482-5558.

SAMARITAN PRAYER LINE The Samaritans of St. Joseph Church has an active telephone prayer line. We would encourage anyone who knows of someone who is ill or troubled and in the need of prayers to call Ann Brochu at 379-5169 with names. Please leave a message on the answering machine if she is not at home.
