I want to thank all of those who donated clothing, jackets and reading glasses for the needy psychiatric pa ents at Mission Hospi‐ tal, where I work. Many of these pa ents are poor, and o en the clothing they wear into the hospi‐ tal is beyond repair. Your generous dona ons have helped us fill out our dona on clothing closet just in me for the cold weather approaching. So, you really have clothed the naked! And your generous dona‐ ons of reading glasses help our pa ents read (many lose their own glasses, or did not have the money for prescrip on glasses). So, really you have helped the blind to see! Thank you SO MUCH for your dona ons, and I'll be back in touch in the spring to replenish our closet for the warmer weather. THANK YOU! ‐ Bar‐ bara Edwards, RN

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

I

n the seventeenth century, English Catho‐ lics, many of them wealthy and well edu‐ cated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so‐called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the popula on by denying the majority poli cal and economic pow‐ er. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that pun‐ ished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situa on began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecu on would not drive the majority away from Catholi‐ cism. Gradually, laws were repealed un l by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and un l the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all ci zens. A Bazaar note to all our congregation of OUR workers

Our days are numbered now and we wanted to get a final word out about the bazaar so everyone will be on the same page. We will be gathering at the church hall on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18th to sort, price, and distribute all donations to their correct booths. So, if you have been a secret worker at home or have been cleaning out some White Elephant stuff, please plan on bringing it to the church on that day. No earlier please. Remember the White Elephant booth does not want clothing or shoes. If you’d like to join the handful of volunteers on this day to help with this final phase, please bring your lunch and a drink and come for the day, you will be welcome. You will also get a firsthand glance at all that is being prepared for this hopefully, very successful annual event. Any questions please call: Mary Valliere 273-7694 or email [email protected] or Margie Riffle 243-0340 or email her at [email protected] Early Start on Raffle Tickets Available Next Weekend: You will have the opportunity to purchase tickets next weekend on a couple of quilts that will be raffled at the Bazaar. Stop by the table in the social hall and take a look!
