SUPPORT CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL Collection Next Sunday—April 14 Four out of every ten dioceses in the United States cannot offer their people basic pastoral care or provide priestly formation and lay ministry training without outside help. The millions of Catholics who live in these places, called home mission dioceses, rely on your generous support of the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. 2
SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER, APRIL 7, 2013 the Easter Proclamation, and listened to readings that told of God’s relationship with the people. We sang the Alleluia, listened to the Gospel of the Resurrection, and then we baptized two adults, Matt Schoenberg and Glynnis Doda. We also confirmed them along with Katherine Ippoliti and Jennifer Van Alstyne—baptized Christians joining us as members of the Catholic Church. All four then joined us in receiving Holy Communion.
PASTOR’S COLUMN
WHAT DAYS THESE HAVE BEEN! What a day this has been! What a rare mood I'm in! Why, it's almost like being in love. There's a smile on my face for the whole human race. Why it's almost like being in love. Those are the opening lyrics of the song “Almost Like Being in Love” written by Lerner and Lowe for the musical Brigadoon. I thought of those lyrics when I was reflecting on our services for the days of the Easter Triduum, though the lyrics would need a slight edit: What days these have been! What a rare mood I'm in! Why, it's almost like being in heaven. There's a smile on my face for the whole human race. Why it's almost like being in heaven. The services were filled with faith and joy. I know they certainly put a smile on my face and helped me to grow in my love of God and love for you, the people of God here at Saint Joseph Parish. I would like to share a few moments that particularly touched me during the services.
There were many moments that touched me, but none more than baptizing Matt and Glynnis. Immersing their heads in the baptismal font three times as I said the words of baptism was a wonderful moment. Seeing them drenched with water and smiling with joy was beautiful. I have never witnessed the birth of a baby, but I certainly witnessed the birth of two new children of God at the Vigil. I also had the joy of giving Matt, Glynnis, Katherine, and Jennifer Holy Communion for the first time. Another special moment!
HOLY THURSDAY The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday Evening got the Triduum off to a wonderful start. It was a privilege as pastor to wash the feet of six members of the parish during the Mass. There were the small feet of a seven-year-old boy, feet that were soft and smooth, and then there were feet that belonged to older members of our parish. Feet that had obviously walked many, many miles as they follow the way of the Lord.
EASTER SUNDAY We had eight Masses Easter Sunday morning with great attendance and a fine spirit. At the Masses I celebrated, I particularly felt the presence of God as I sprinkled the people after they renewed their baptismal promises. The water coming down on people was a powerful symbol of God raining down his love.
I also was touched as I carried the Blessed Sacrament in procession to the repository that had been prepared in the alcove on the Grand Street side of the church. I truly felt the Risen Lord was walking among us. GOOD FRIDAY The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord is always a moving liturgy. Two moments stood out for me and both involved the cross. At one point Father Andrew was holding the large cross as the choir sang Adoramus Te, Christe (We Adore You, O Christ). He seemed to be embracing the cross like someone embraces a dear friend. Following that, everyone came forward to adore the cross. Some people genuflected before it, others bowed, some touched it, other kissed the wood of the cross. It was touching to see little children coming forward. They carefully watched what the adults were doing and imitated what they saw. A reminder that faith is passed on much more by example than by words.
I have to say our new Mass Schedule made Easter Sunday much less hectic and congested. There was sufficient time for the parking areas to clear before people started to arrive for the next Mass. THANK YOU I would like to thank all of you who came to our services this past week. In particular, I want to thank our greeters, readers, music ministers, ministers of Holy Communion, the member of our RCIA Team who shared their faith with Glynnis, Matt, Katherine, and Jennifer as they prepared them for the sacraments, and finally the members of our Art & Environment Committee who decorated the Upper Church, Mary’s Chapel in the Lower Church, and the school gym. What days these have been, thanks to you and to the Lord. Alleluia! Love, Father Tom Iwanowski
HOLY SATURDAY The Easter Vigil at 8:30 pm was amazing. We blessed the new fire, processed with the Easter Candle, sang 3
SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Today is the Feast of the
SAINT JOSEPH PARISH OFFERS YOU “BRIGHTNESS AND SERENITY” APRIL 13 after the 5 pm Mass
DIVINE MERCY OF JESUS CHRIST as revealed by Christ to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. Pope John Paul II extended the celebration (the first Sunday after Easter) to the entire Catholic Church on the day that he canonized Saint Faustina (Apr. 30, 2000).
You are cordially invited to our next parish Coffee Talk, Saturday, April 13 after the 5 pm Mass at our historic Parish Life Center on Grove Street (behind the lower school). The paintings of an exciting new artist—who also happens to be part of our own Saint Joseph family—will be featured! Paul Saint-Aimé ‘s experiences in his native Haiti—working with the CARE foundation to teach modern farming methods, earning a business degree, working in the import/export field—all led to a position in the Haitian government as an administrative director in the Ministry of Finance. During his time there, he worked to make reforms, but the political scene in Haiti was extremely dangerous. In 1991, Paul decided to move with his wife to join their three daughters who were studying in the United States. There he worked in insurance and for the Human Resources Administration of the city of New York, continuing a career in service begun many years before in Haiti. In America, Paul began to develop his painting, something he had been doing since childhood. Now at age 79, Paul will tell you that painting has afforded him moments of great serenity in the midst of much change and upheaval (including the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake). From memory he created vibrantly colored Haitian landscapes in oils and then branched out to explore other styles, including portraits and caricatures, which he has done in acrylics. He began to study at the famed Salamagundi Club in New York City and was the winner of a 2008 art contest sponsored by them. Come see Paul’s beautiful work (opening Saturday, April 13 from 6-9:30 pm, with walk-throughs also available on Sunday, April 14 from 9am-3pm), and experience some of the “brightness and serenity” this remarkable man has found and now shares with us all.
"Heavenly Father and God of Mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of Life."

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ
Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee
The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 20:19-31. In today’s Gospel, we are told that a week after Jesus was put to death and rose from the dead, he appeared to a group of his friends who were locked in a room. The reason they were locked in the room was because they were afraid. They were afraid that the people who had killed Jesus would come after them because they were his friends and followers. When he appeared to his friends, they were filled with joy. He showed them the wounds in his hands and feet where he had been nailed to the cross. There was one friend named Thomas who was not present. When he returned, his friends told him that Jesus had visited them, but he did not believe them. He had seen Jesus die on the cross and be laid in the tomb. He would never believe that Jesus was risen without seeing the risen Lord himself. A week later Jesus came back to visit again and showed Thomas the wounds in his hands and feet. After seeing Jesus’ hands and feet, he told Jesus that he believed. Jesus told Thomas that he believed in him because he had seen him. Jesus then said, “Blessed are they who believe without seeing.” Jesus does not want us to be like Thomas. He wants us to believe in him even though we don’t see him. He wants us to be people of faith and trust who believe he is risen and alive! MISSION OF THE WEEK
I will try not to be like Doubting Thomas. I will believe in Jesus. When I am afraid, I will believe that Jesus is with me and will help me. A REMINDER If you need special envelopes to make your gift to God and to His Church, just ask one of the adults at the Liturgy of the Word with Children. 10
