REGISTRATION You must register for the Shelby Senior Center every year. The cost is $3.00 for residents of Shelby Twp. and the City of Utica and $4.00 for non residents. The monies collected are used to defray the cost of this Newsletter. Membership is required for all programs. DEAF OLDER ADULTS Meets 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at the Senior Center. Sponsored by Deaf and Hearing Impaired Services, Inc. and Tri-County Deaf Senior Citizens. ONGOING ACTIVITIES COUNTRY/WESTERN LINE DANCING - Old dances as well as new. Classes are $4.00 per person. Intermediate classes meet Monday at 1:00 p.m. Your instructor is Connie Frendt. BIBLE STUDY - Monday at 1:00 p.m. If you are interested in studying the Bible, this is the group for you. EXERCISE - Tuesday and Friday at 10:15 a.m. A great exercise for people of all ages. Janice Bartneck, Instructor. Only $1. CHAIR EXERCISE -Wednesday at 10:15a.m. This exercise is perfect for those who want a great workout and still have the support of a chair. Pat Pircer, Instructor. SENIOR LOAN CLOSET This a free service to the community. Crutches, canes, portable commodes, walkers and wheelchairs are available on loan for the short term.

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNUSED YARN? If you have any yarn you aren’t using, please bring it to the Senior Center and it will be used to knit and crochet articles that will be donated to charity. ARTIST EXHIBIT The work of one of our local artists is displayed in the cafeteria or showcase for a two month period. Perhaps you might find the perfect piece of art you have been searching for to grace your home. Come and check out the artist for July and August, Lorraine Gedeon. TAI CHI Will resume the first Monday after Labor Day at 12:30 p.m. The classes are $39.00 for 6 weeks. Janet Randolph, Instructor.

Independence Day will be celebrated at our July 4th Party on Tuesday, July 3 at 11:00 a.m. For our entertainment, we are going to try something a little different. Don Eickholdt, an expert on lighthouses will be joining us. As residents of a Great Lakes state, we should enjoy hearing about something that is an integral part of our history. Come and enjoy a nutrition lunch followed by Don’s interesting presentation. The price is $6.00.

The August Lunch Bunch will be going to Eastern Market for the recently instituted “Eastern Market Tuesday”. Lunch will be at Slows BBQ banquet room. Slows is owned by a young man who is deeply involved in rebuilding Detroit. It is located near the old train station. The price is approximately $26.00 (tbd) for lunch and the bus. The date is Tuesday, August 14. Departure is at 10:00.

What better way to spend a beautiful summer afternoon than cruising on the Detroit River. On July 20th we will be doing just that on a Diamond Jack cruise. Before the cruise we will have breakfast at the Hudson Cafe where you can choose from traditional breakfast to yummy crepes, etc. Sandwiches are also available. You may order off the menu with separate checks. The cruise and bus are $ 16.00. Depart at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments/snacks may be purchased on the boat. THERE IS NO DINNER DANCE IN JULY. DANCES WILL RESUME IN AUGUST. Silla Tomasi, Medicare Assistance Program Representative, is coming back to assist you with the open enrollment for Medicare, October 17 through December 5th. Appointments start at 9:00 a.m. and the last appointment is at 3:00 p.m. These sessions are for Medicare Part D only. There is no cost for Mr. Tomasi’s services. BRAIN GAMES A group called Brain Games meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. If you are curious, come and observe. This is fun and you are never pressured to participate. Call the Center for information 586-739-7540.

The August Dinner Dance will be held on Friday, August 17 at 5:30 p.m. The theme will be ‘A Night in Hollywood’. Music for dancing by Tri-City Plus and a scrumptious dinner will be served. Tickets are $16.00 at the front desk. You may come to the dance only for $8.00. The Annual Senior Picnic will be held on Wednesday, August 22 at Riverbends Park, Hickory Grove Shelter, at 10:00 a.m. There will be bingo and lots of fun. A delicious picnic lunch will be served. Tickets are $12.00 at the front desk. Only you can be yourself. No one else is qualfied for the job. BUS SERVICE Did you know that the Senior Center operates four buses every day Monday through Friday. We are fortunate to partner with Smart and provide community transit for seniors or residents with disabilities that reside in Shelby or Utica and are members of the Senior Center. For medical appointments we travel north to 27 mile, south to 18 mile, east to Romeo Plank and west to Livernois. For shopping we stay within Shelby and Utica. Bus tickets are $.50 each way. Contact the Senior Center anytime, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that we need two weeks advance notice for medical appointments and one weeks advance notice for personal appointments.

NUTRITION PROGRAM Seniors who are 60 years of age and older are eligible to participate in the Macomb County Nutrition Program. A lunch time meal is served here at the Center, Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. A $3.00 donation is welcome. Meals are served on a first -come- first served basis. The Nutrition Program also has a birthday party each month. Please check with the kitchen for the dates. All those planning to attend the monthly birthday party must sign up with the kitchen in person.

TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE FOR EVENING EVENTS IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST. CALL US OR STOP BY THE FRONT DESK IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF A RIDE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SIGN UP EARLY FOR ALL ACTIVITIES. QUILTING GUILD The Connecting Threads Quilting Guild meets on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. The ladies turn out some really lovely quilts. Membership in the Quilting Guild is open and new people would be welcomed. Come and join the group and bring your ideas for new projects.
