BIOGRAPHIES BROADWAY SWINGS! is a two-act musical evening that brings to life the best Broadway music of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s. An evening-long salute to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, The Gershwins, Lerner and Loewe, Harold Arlen and Irving Berlin, the production features a 17-piece Big Band led by pianist Mike Greensill, who provided the all-new Jazz and Swing instrumental arrangements. Brian Cassier is the music coordinator-orchestra contractor. The blending of Broadway song with Jazz and Swing is a marriage made in heaven. The definitive versions of Broadway songs have almost always come from Pop singers or from Jazz musicians rather than from the original cast recordings. Jazz musicians have, in turn, brought much to Broadway. Broadway Swings! combines the best of Broadway and Jazz, letting audiences hear their favorite songs in a whole new way. HILARY KOLE co-created and originated the lead female roles in the award-winning Off-Broadway musicals Our Sinatra and Singing Astaire. Kole began her professional career at the legendary Rainbow Room and made her concert hall debut at Lincoln Center as part of the American Songbook Series with Jonathan Schwartz. She appeared at Carnegie Hall in a Tribute to Oscar Peterson and was the headliner in New York City at the Town Hall (Nightlife Awards). MICHAEL CIVISCA had lead roles in Las Vegas and Broadway stage productions and has released five albums. For his Love Is Like a Breeze album, Civisca worked with veteran arranger-producer Charlie Calello. Civisca is also a voice actor for commercials, animation, and movie soundtracks. WESLA WHITFIELD and MIKE GREENSILL:

Whitfield began singing at home in Santa Maria, California. Greensill studied piano in England. Destiny brought both to San Francisco, where they met. They have worked with major symphonies, orchestras, bands, and solo performers, including Michael Feinstein, Marian McPartland, and Joe Wilder. The duo has performed in the Tribute to Frank Sinatra and in tributes to Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Judy Garland. The pair was invited to perform at the White House for Hillary Clinton in 1996. As an arranger, Greensill has written for big bands and symphony orchestras, including the Boston Pops and the San Francisco Symphony. He has worked with Rita Moreno, Broadway talents Lillias White and Franc D’Ambrosio, and Jazz singers Madeline Eastman, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Denise Perrier. LA TANYA HALL has collaborated with some of music’s most celebrated performers, including Diana Ross, Bobby McFerrin, Harry Belafonte, Burt Bacharach, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, and Patti LaBelle. She has appeared as a soloist with the American Composer’s Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, and the St. Louis Symphony. Hall, who has toured with the musical Dreamgirls and with legends Ross and Franklin, also appeared on the television show Blue Bloods. LIGETI ARTISTS LLC/THESHOWSTORE.COM, PRODUCER provides live entertainment and support services for theaters, performing arts centers, music festivals, associations, charities, and private and corporate event planners throughout the world. CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO AND MONTREAL GUITAR TRIO

Saturday, November 8, 2014, 8:00 PM There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.

BIOGRAPHIES Combining more than 40 years of experience into a unique six-guitar format, the virtuoso guitarists of the California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio play independently and together in an electrifying set, delivering an evening of original compositions as well as new works. They perform arrangements of each other’s material, as well as innovative takes on Rock standards. Inspired in 2009 by an impromptu studio session in Montreal, the trios’ joint ventures yielded the concert recording +Live, which was released to wide critical acclaim. One of the most eclectic guitar groups on the music scene today, the CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO fuses a colorful spectrum of genres, inventing its own unique sounds that have captivated audiences worldwide since its 1991 founding. Guitar Player Magazine cheers the California Guitar Trio for its “fearless multi-genre explorations,” which have driven 14 albums and nearly 1,500 performances in a career that has spanned more than two decades. Founded in 1991, the group has crisscrossed the realms 4

of Rock, Jazz, World, Surf, and Classical music, with its tunes being played as wake-up music in outer space for the crew of NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavour. The trio – whose members include Bert Lams of Belgium, Hideyo Moriya of Japan, and Paul Richards of the United States – have worked with music industry greats such as King Crimson, John McLaughlin, and David Sylvian. The MONTREAL GUITAR TRIO, which won the 2011 Opus Prize for “Concert of the Year” in the Jazz/World Music category, consists of members Marc Morin, Sébastien Dufour, and Glenn Lévesque. The ensemble has firmly established itself with a reputation for cross-pollinating various musical forms, releasing the universally embraced albums Cambria, Garam Maram Masala, and Der Prinz. Described by the CBC as the “hottest” guitar ensemble in Canada, the Montreal Guitar Trio has performed in prestigious venues worldwide, including the BB King Blues Club in New York, the Rundetårn in Copenhagen, and the legendary Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. n

BIOGRAPHY The POPOVICH COMEDY PET THEATER is a “hodgepodge of wacky skits with animals in colorful costumes,” hails The New York Times. The show’s 15 cats and 10 dogs, once strays rescued from animal shelters, display their talents in a fun variety of stunts and skits. From jumping rope and walking on hind legs to barking out an answer to a math problem, canines delight and excite. With a unique lineup that also showcases European-style clowns, awesome acrobatic moves, and eyepopping juggling and balancing acts, it’s a production sure to enrapture both adults and kids of all ages. The winner of five international juggling awards and a member of the Guinness Book of World Records, show creator Gregory Popovich incorporates each pet’s personalities into his routines. Whether their specialty is jumping, climbing, barking, balancing, or just sitting there looking cute, Popovich works around their natural talents. His “work is the cat’s meow,” praises The New York Times. A fourth-generation professional circus performer, Popovich previously worked with the Moscow Circus Group

and the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. Named “Entertainer of the Year” by the American Circus Association, he was featured on Animal Planet, Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, and The Tonight Show with both Jay Leno and the late Johnny Carson. The Popovich Comedy Pet Theater also appeared on the hit NBC television competition program America’s Got Talent. Popovich wrote 2009’s You CAN Train Your Cat and 2014’s Doggy Gone Good. He released his first full-length film, 2014’s POPOVICH and the Voice of the Fabled American West, winning the “Audience Choice Award” at the Dances With Films Festival in Los Angeles. Popovich Comedy Pet Theater has wowed sold-out crowds worldwide, including in France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Israel, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Canada. In the United States, the production won fans with performances in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Miami, and Las Vegas, where it is now based at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. n 5

BIOGRAPHIES Born and bred in Vienna, Austria, Franz Schubert is one of the greatest composers of the early Romantic era, recognized for bridging Classical and Romantic compositions. Schubert died at age 31, leaving many of his works incomplete, most notably the Eighth Symphony (also known as the Unfinished Symphony). For more than 20 years, ROB KAPILOW has brought the joy and wonder of Classical music – and unraveled some of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s work brings music into people’s lives: opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear. Kapilow’s range of activities is astonishingly broad, including his What Makes It Great? presentations (now for more than 15 seasons in New York and Boston), his family compositions and Family Musik events, his Citypieces, and residencies with institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. The reach of his interactive events and activities is wide, both geographically and culturally: from Native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to audiences in Kyoto and Kuala Lumpur, and from tots barely out of diapers to musicologists in Ivy League programs, his audiences are diverse and unexpected, but invariably rapt and keen to come back for more. Kapilow’s popularity and appeal are reflected in notable invitations and achievements: he appeared on NBC’s Today Show in conversation with then-host Katie Couric and he presented a special What Makes It Great? event for broadcast on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center. He has written two highly popular books published by Wiley/ Lincoln Center: All You Have to Do Is Listen, which won the PSP Prose Award for “Best Book in Music and the Performing Arts”; and the 2011 What Makes It Great, the first book of its kind to be especially designed for the iPad with embedded musical examples. Also an award-winning composer, Kapilow recently premiered a large-scale work commissioned by the Marin Symphony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Golden

Gate Bridge. His latest album is Polar Express/Gertrude McFuzz, featuring collaborations with Isabel Leonard and Nathan Gunn. The CAL STATE FULLERTON UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA trains outstanding instrumentalists in a wide range of orchestral styles. The students receive opportunities to study and perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Orchestra members have played with internationally acclaimed performers such as Yo-Yo Ma, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and the St. Petersburg Quartet. n
