About the cover design: Quasicrystals This year, we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of SCI’s Annual Fundraising Event and Auction. The 15th anniversary is traditionally symbolized by crystal. With that in mind, the geometric pattern that appears throughout this program is inspired by the work of Danny Schectman of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory. In 2011, Professor Schectman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his 1982 discovery of quasiperiodic crystals, more commonly known as quasicrystals. This revolutionary discovery has changed the way scientists think about matter & the atomic arrangement of crystals.

 uasicrystal matter is formed atomically in a manner somewhere Q between the amorphous solids of glasses (special forms of metals and other minerals, as well as common glass) and the precise pattern of crystals. Like crystals, quasicrystals contain an ordered structure, but the patterns are subtle and do not recur at precisely regular intervals. Rather, quasicrystals appear to be formed from two different structures assembled in a nonrepeating array, the three-dimensional equivalent of a tile floor made from two shapes of tile and having an orientational order but no repetition.
