I never expected the Ecu ador Mission with the Newman Center would impact me as it did. I embarked on this mission not knowing what to exp ect as I had no id ea of th e sch edule or projects the Servant Sisters and Broth ers had prepared for us. The group was separated, girls stayed with the Nuns and guys stayed with the Priests. Both group s were assign ed different projects that ranged from sandin g and painting walls, fixing old pupil desks in th e school, distrib uting food baskets to homes in various communities, visiting the sick, bringing communion to the homebound, building a fence and painting a chapel recently repaired. There is so much spiritual and material need in th ose communities. Th e work that the priests and broth ers Servants of the Hou se of the Mother do is incredible. Honestly, spending time with them strength ened my priesthood. Their dedication to prayer and ministry is admirable and inspiring. They are constantly on the go; they are happy with the little they have and eat whatever is set on their table. I n ever heard a complaint come out of their mouths. They taught me to be thankful and grateful for all the blessings I have received. Today’s Gosp el remind s me of the Servant Sisters and Brothers of th e House of the Mother I met in th e Mission. Truly, they are blessed, the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God. I invite you to take time to meditate on the Beatitudes this week, our own call to holiness and to recognize all the blessings God has outpoured on your life, and say a little prayer for those who go without, for those who live in deplorable condition s and for those who leave everything behind to serve them with love and compassion.
Fr. Bismarck
Rejoice and be glad; your reward will be great in heaven.

P. Bismarck

Newark received many immigrants from Ireland due to the terrible Potato Famine of the 1840s. Bishop Hughes of New York authorized Father Patrick Moran, pastor of St. John’s on Mulberry Street, to build a new church for the Irish immigrants. Father Moran purchased the land for St. Patrick’s in 1846. Father Moran signed a contract with a builder but the builder ran off with the money!
