ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE EST. 1973

THE HISTORY

OF THE BELMAR SAINT PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

In 1974, for the first time, men and women of the Jersey Shore joined together and marched up Main Street in honor of Saint Patrick. Formed and led by the newly formed Jerry Lynch Club, the parade was intended to be a showcase for the “Irish Riviera.” Entertained by marchers, bands, and a lot of fire engines, crowds lined the streets early on in this parade. Within four years the parade was developing rapidly and attracted statewide attention. Marchers were numbering close to a thousand and the crowds kept growing. By 1981, the railroad added special trains on parade day to accommodate the ever-growing number of spectators from North Jersey and New York. By 1985, the parade had come into its own and as such, needed its own committee. Led up to this point by members of the Jerry Lynch Club, a committee was formed to deal solely with the job of putting a parade on the street. The executive committee was led by then chairman, Dave Stanley. The group, at the time, boasts 25 members. The following year, another tradition is born with the investiture Mass at St. Rose R.C. Church and parade spectators neared 80,000! 1992 saw the beautiful St. Patrick parade banner for the first time at the head of the parade. It now leads the parade every year. By 1993, more than 4000 marchers, 35 bands and 20 floats took to Main Street. Within 10 years our numbers grew to over 5,500 marchers and more than 40 bands. Roughly 200,000 spectators revel in what the parade had become.

In 2004 we said goodbye to our friend Dave Stanley and the parade needed a new Executive Board leader. The parade had grown substantially in size, coordination had become almost a full time job from December to March. The office had been computerized and staffed several days a week. In an effort to not miss a beat, two new leaders were named as Parade Chairmen, Chip Cavanagh and Bill O’Connell. 2008 Bill O’Connell assumed the position of Treasurer, and Chip Cavanagh as our Chairman and leader. In 2015 as we celebrate our 42nd year, our offices are computerized with state of the art equipment, we have participation with over 250 groups, 25 Pipe Bands, 25 floats and over 9,000 marchers. The parade has a television audience of over 160,000 thanks to Cablevision of Monmouth County and has a spectator audience of over 300,000. It can also be viewed on the internet at www.belmarparade.com What started as a dream and a plan by a young Jerry Lynch Association has become one of the highlights of the Saint Patrick’s Day season and has now transformed into one of the great Irish events of the Saint Patrick’s Day Season! This year we celebrate another successful year and thank the original parade committee members for their dedication and years of service to the Irish community.

DEAR FRIENDS

of the Belmar/Lake Como St. Patrick’s Day Parade,

Dear Friends and Supporters, Congratulations to this year’s Grand Marshal, Paul Caverly, and this year’s Deputy Grand Marshal, Jane Donovan. I wish you and your families a brilliant day! Enjoy every minute of leading this great parade down Main Street, which today is renamed as Dave Stanley Avenue. We are also remembering a truly beautiful woman, inside and out, and a dear friend to the parade for many years, Ann Rae. Ann has been greatly missed and we wish love and comfort to her family. It has been a very cold winter which makes it even more enjoyable to kick off the St. Patrick’s Day season by beginning with The Belmar Lake Cumo St. Patrick’s Day Parade the very first day of March. A wise Irish woman once said, “St. Patrick’s Day is an enchanted time…a day to begin transforming winter’s dreams into summer’s magic!” and there is nothing like summer’s magic on the Jersey Shore. The parade and all of the festivities leading up to this weekend is only possible with the hard work and dedication by the parade committee members, sponsors and friends. Thank you all for your support whether it is in donations of time, money or commitment. We recognize it and thank you for it!

may st. patrick guard you wherever you go and guide you in whatever you do, and may his loving protection be a blessing to you always. Slainte! Eugene “Chip” Cavanagh PARADE CHAIRMAN

JANE MARIE ZIMMERMAN DONOVAN

GRAND MARSHAL

I was born in Jersey City August 23, 1946 to John and Elizabeth Caverly. We moved to Belmar in 1949 and have resided here since. I have been married to Margaret 44½ years and have four children. A son Paul Jr and his wife Susan who have 2 children Paul III and Catherine. A daughter Beth O’Reilly and husband Brendan who have 3 children Jack, Ella and Quin. A daughter Christin, who is engaged to Joseph Connell and finally a son Matthew, who is a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp. During my school years I never left the Jersey Shore area. I graduated from St. Rose Grammar School, C.B.A. High School and Monmouth College. I was one of the founding members and still an active member of the Jerry Lynch Social and Athletic Club. In 1973 I served on the original St. Patrick’s Parade committee. I was appointed to the Belmar Board of Commissioners in 1977 and subsequently elected to the Commissioners and served as the police commissioner for 10 years. I was employed as Executive Director of the Neptune Housing Authority and the Belmar Housing Authority.

CO-DEPUTY GRAND MARSHALS

I am a past Grand Knight of Thomas U. Reilly Knights of Columbus, St. Catherine’s Spring Lake. I am also a past chairman of the South Monmouth Sewage Authority and past president of the Monmouth County Municipal Association. I also served as a past Belmar Democratic Municipal Chairman and member of the Democratic Municipal Committee.

Jane is a true “clam digger” born at Fitkin Hospital (now Jersey Shore University Medical Center) in Neptune, NJ. She grew up at the Jersey Shore, living in Sea Girt and Spring Lake. She graduated from St. Catharine’s Grammar School, Spring Lake, Manasquan High School and attended Brookdale Community College. Jane gets her Irish ancestry from her father’s side. Her paternal great grandmother, Mary Brennan was born in Ireland and came to the states at a very young age. In 1860, Mary married George Zimmerman. The family settled in Newark, NJ. The couple had nine children including William, Jane’s paternal grandfather. William, who worked at Ballantine Brewery for many years, married Clara Blewitt in 1898, and together they had seven children. Both of Clara’s parents (Jeffrey Blewitt and Ann McConnell) were born in Ireland. Jane’s parents, Magdalene “Aileen” Kircher met Frederick “Buddy” Zimmerman on the Belmar beach after both had served in the military during World War II. Aileen served in the Marine Corps, and Buddy was in the Army. Aileen went on to work for the State of New Jersey, and Buddy taught in the Wall Twp. school system until his retirement. Jane was the second child in her family, born after her sister Barbara and followed by her siblings Fred, Carol and Clare. Her three sisters and their families have lived in Sonoma County, Ca. for many years, and her brother and his family reside in Lanoka Harbor, NJ. For more than 31 years Jane was employed by “the phone company” through its various iterations (New Jersey Bell, Bell Atlantic and Verizon). Jane worked in the engineering department in offices in Asbury Park, Freehold, Trenton, and Wall. After retiring, Jane wanted to stay active and involved. Jane loves to volunteer, but likes to serve in the background. She was completely shocked when she received the phone call telling her she was elected Deputy Grand Marshal. For many years she attended the parade with family and friends, but never in her wildest dreams did she think she would be chosen to be the Deputy Grand Marshal. What an honor!

One of the first things she volunteered to do upon her retirement was raising a puppy for the Seeing Eye Foundation. Until a Seeing Eye dog is ready for training, about 1 to 1 ½ years, it spends time with a “foster family.” That family gives the dog love, gentle guidance and consistent care. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the Donovans) their puppy was diagnosed with Addison’s disease at 8 months old and was unable to continue in the program. The Donovans were able to adopt the puppy. At almost 12 years old, he is still doing well despite his medical issues. Jane also began to walk on the Belmar Boardwalk in the mornings with her friends. After their walk they would stop at the Dunkin Donuts on Ocean Ave. for coffee. There she became friendly with a group of regulars and met Dave Stanley. Dave immediately drafted Martha Finan, Jane Guild and Jane Donovan into the Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. For many years the “Dunkin Donuts Girls” (AKA “Section C Girls”) lined up marchers in Section C on parade day. Named Manasquan Borough “Volunteer of the Year” in 2011, Jane remains an active member of various borough organizations including the Environmental Commission, Tourism Commission, Board of Health and Citizens Advisory Board. She is also a proud member of the Women of Irish Heritage Jersey Shore, The Telephone Pioneers of America and I.B.E.W. Local 827 (Ret.). In 2013, Jane and nine other Manasquan volunteers were honored in a joint resolution by the New Jersey State Senate and General Assembly and by the Monmouth County Mental Health Association for their extraordinary service in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Jane joined the Donovan clan more than 20 years ago and is still happily married to Ed Donovan. The couple lives in Manasquan with their yellow lab, Calvin. Jane is a parishioner of St. Denis Church. Weather permitting, in the spring, summer and fall Jane can be found bicycling from Manasquan to Belmar in the morning, walking the boards with her friends and stopping for coffee at Dunkin Donuts. On special occasions she brings her famous crumb cake for all to share.
