Sacred Heart Church Winnetka - Glencoe
THE TOWER Sunday, June 12, 2011 Pentecost Sunday
IN THANKSGIVING As I move to my next assignment as pastor of St. John De La Salle, I take this opportunity to express my gratitude. But when your achievement and growth are the result of the efforts of many people, you feel stripped of the knowledge of whom to thank. If I claim any achievement and growth here at Sacred Heart parish, it is because it has been a product of the efforts of all of you. You accorded me many opportunities to be in your lives. In those interactions and exchanges you gave me a chance to grow in my ministry, as a priest and as a person. Truly, there were many opportunities: celebrating the sacraments, burying the dead, visiting the sick, teaching, attending and playing sports with your children, sharing dinners with you, and attending meetings, just to mention a few. I extend special thanks to Rev. Robert Heidenreich, friend and mentor, whose encouragement and support are of priceless value to this work. For five years he has accorded me undivided and constant support and encouragement. To Sacred Heart Staff, I am deeply and forever grateful for their generous help and assistance. They were always available to offer help when I needed it. I am forever grateful. To all Sacred Heart Parishioners, you have influenced me tremendously. Your generosity and support has been infectious and has left a lasting mark on me. Our school, Sacred Heart Secondary School (SHSS) has become a reality because of you. I say thank you. You welcomed, accepted and accommodated me from day one. You invited me to dinners and different events. You will always be in my heart and prayers. Parishes Seek New Ways to Reflect Christ’s Light If you listen carefully to the conversations around the Archdiocese, three words are repeated often: Strategic Pastoral Plan. This initiative came from a request of Cardinal George, through the work of a committee who extracted information from 8,500 surveys and compared it with current research findings. The committee determined that there was a clear need for a Strategic Pastoral Plan in the Archdiocese because: the majority of Catholics feel at least somewhat ill equipped to share knowledge of the Catholic faith with the next generation, the majority of Catholics do not attend Mass regularly, Catholics have mixed pride in the Catholic Church, large numbers of Catholics do not adequately understand the meaning and value of the sacraments, and most Catholics who leave the practice of their faith do so by age 24. These basic needs led the steering committee to create a plan that would focus on evangelization, formation and parish vitality and would be implemented at the parish level over the next 4 years. The overarching objective is to deepen the engagement of most Catholics with their faith and the Church. The plan has a series of four ―launches‖ for each of the next four years: July 2011 launches the Year of Teens and Young Adults (ages 14 to 24) July 2012 launches the Year of Sunday Mass July 2013 launches the Year of Parent Formation July 2014 launches the Year of the Sacraments The complete plan is available to download at the Archdiocese of Chicago website at www.archchicago.org The website will have current information and resources on the specific year’s events as they become available. Feel free to send your comments about the Strategic Pastoral Plan to
[email protected] The closing theological statement of the plan says it all: ―We believe that we, the people of God and the body of Christ, better reflect the light when we have been purified and when we renew our purpose and our hope. To be clearer instruments of the light of Christ is the sum and substance of this Strategic Pastoral Plan.‖ How will this parish Reflect Christ’s Light? Watch the bulletin for all the details.

CATECHISTS NEEDED – CONSIDER THIS In this column each week we’d like you to meet some of our catechists and hear why they teach religious education. Perhaps you have the gifts and ability to be a catechist and would be willing to call (847-446-6535) to talk further to Sr. Luanne about volunteering. No need to be a mom or dad in our SHRE program. This year we had two husband and wife teams teaching, three teams of moms with their teen sons/daughter, two high school seniors, one grad student, one retired man, and many other moms and dads totaling 60 catechists. Ordinarily there are two catechists in each class. Stay tuned each week to read their stories. I can’t believe it has been eight years. I began working in the office on Sunday mornings while my two girls were in their Religious Education classes. I loved the ladies in the office and enjoyed helping all the teachers. I also helped maintain the supplies in the Religious Ed classroom cabinets on Wednesday afternoons. After that, I began teaching kindergarten with a lovely man named George Kelly. He was so good with the little ones. George had been teaching for 15 years, long past his children being a part of the Religious Ed program. The next two years were spent as an aide in my child’s classroom. The past two years I have been teaching a pre-kindergarten class. I love teaching the little ones. They are so sweet, bursting and bubbling as they walk in the door each week. I love the lesson planning; it takes me to a special place. Lesson planning is a weekly reminder of all the beautiful things to be thankful for. Thanks for letting me be a part of the Sacred Heart family. Tracy Moag We are Shelley and Marty Carey and we have been catechists at Sacred Heart for two years. As catechists, our lives have been enriched by our students. Religious education provides us a forum to share our faith with the next generation of Catholics. The questions and ideas generated by our 7th graders allows us to reflect on the important of God in our lives. Our 21st century world is not always in sync with our values and faith. Technology has increased students’ social networking avenues, but without careful support and monitoring, it can be daunting for some young people to navigate. Religious education provides an opportunity to help students understand that there is always a constant in their lives and it is their faith and the love of God. We feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to teach our faith to our students. Shelley & Marty Carey
The Women’s Center June, 2011 Volunteers are needed to assist clients and/or sort donations in our Family Room in Chicago on Saturday mornings and to answer the phone on Tuesday. Call Jackie at 773-794-8807 for more information on these opportunities to help. We need diapers in sizes newborn, 4, 5 and 6 only. We need maternity clothes and boy’s and girl’s summer clothing-size 6 and up. We urgently need 12 strollers, 4 double strollers and 1 triple stroller and 2 adult rocking chairs. Also needed are 6 infant/carrier car seats, baby cribs and mattresses, extra crib parts, crib sheets, bumper pads, 4 high- chairs, 6 bassinets, Pack N Plays, 6 bouncers, 5 baby bath tubs, baby swings and 4 small chests of drawers.
