One Day Only: Saturday, May 28, 2016 8:15am Mass, 4:15pm Confessions, & 8:00pm Confessions; ALL CANCELED We deeply regret the inconvenience it causes. We hope you will understand and forgive us. On Saturday, May 28th we are pleased and honored to celebrate two Confirma on Masses. We will confirm our teens at a special Mass scheduled for 10:00am and then later, at the regular 5:30pm Mass we will confirm our adults. We are delighted to welcome Bishop Alex Salazar for the celebra on of both Confirma on Masses. Because there is a great deal of work to be done to set up and prepare the church and sanctuary in prepara on for each Mass; and because there will be some noise in all that has to be done we need to cancel the regular confessions along with the regular morning Mass. All will return to normal the Saturday a er Confirma ons. This is a once a year cancela on of the morning Mass & evening confessions. After the evening Mass there will be a photo session in the church with the Bishop and newly confirmed. Next there is a customary gathering of the priests and deacons with the Bishop. As a result we will be unable to cover the 8:00pm confessions. Once more, please note, this is a once a year cancelation of the morning Mass & evening confessions.

PAGE 6 Readings for the Week...

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Romans 8:8-17. Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26.

THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Order” and “presbyter” are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and “priest” usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the “order of deacons,” “the order of presbyters,” and even “the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neophytes, penitents,” and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an “order” in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The “kiss of peace” is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly “ordained,” not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present.

MEMORIAL MASS AT OUR PARISH To assist those who find it difficult to get to Canoga Park and to allow us as a parish to both mourn Father Jeff’s passing as well as to give thanks for his priesthood we will celebrate a Memorial Mass in his honor and memory on: Monday + June 6, 2016 + 5:30pm Mass Father Jeff will be greatly missed. We have all come to appreciate and love his quick wit and his very special sense of humor. Many parishioners suggested he should have had a regular stand-up comedy rou ne! He brought smiles to every face in the parish and a laugh to every heart and soul. He was always warm, loving and friendly. I personally will miss the many ways he was a helpful friend to me, offering generously to fill in for me or cover for me here and there so that I could be free to deal with some crisis. I never told him I needed help; rather he had a sixth sense that always realized when I could use a helping hand. He reminded me of Radar on the TV series MASH. Father Jeff was originally ordained for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. in 1976 and was celebra ng his 40th anniversary of priesthood this May 2016. Born April 18, 1950 he died on April 25th, just one week a er his 66th birthday. Please remember him in your prayers. I pray you can join us for his Funeral Mass &/or Memorial Mass. (626) 332-3570
